Mellotronworks for free download!
Current mood: adventurous
Systems Theory mellotronist, Mike Dickson, has offered his new mellotron album for free download. I have also contributed viola samples which are then played through the mellotron!
I have also de-tuned the viola to include some notes lower than the viola's natural range, offering 35 notes for use on the mellotron.
Mellotronworks A series of popular classical music pieces played entirely on the Mellotron
* Mars, The Bringer of War (Holst) * Adagio in G minor (Albinoni) * Adagio for Strings (Barber) * Air on The G String (Bach) * Canon in D major (Pachelbel) * Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (Vaughan Williams)

Help Send Lucky to a Sanctuary!..:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />
San Antonio Zoo elephant is held in cruel isolation
Lucky desperately needs your help. She's a 48-year-old female Asian elephant who has been living alone at the San Antonio Zoo in Texas since the death of her companion, Alport, almost one year ago. Female elephants are intensely social, making her solitary confinement especially cruel.
In addition to Lucky's inhumane isolation, she likely suffers from foot problems, as evidenced by the zoo's frequent foot treatments, and has a large abscess on her back leg. Foot problems are no surprise, as the San Antonio Zoo elephant display is extremely small and outdated, giving Lucky only about one-half acre of barren space.
Foot problems and arthritis, caused by inadequate zoo conditions, are the number one reason for euthanizing elephants in captivity. Another elephant at the San Antonio Zoo, Ginny, was euthanized in 2004 after suffering for years from painful, infected feet and arthritis.
As if all this weren't bad enough, the San Antonio Zoo is adding a unique twist to Lucky's story. The zoo is constructing a new attraction that will feature African animals, including elephants. As Lucky is an Asian elephant she will have no place in this new display. Yet rather than retire Lucky to a sanctuary, the zoo has come up with a nonsensical plan to bring in another Asian elephant and then ship out both Asian elephants when the African section is complete!
After 46 years on display in a tiny, unnatural exhibit at the San Antonio Zoo, Lucky deserves to be sent to a spacious natural-habitat sanctuary where she can spend her final years roaming freely in the company of other Asian elephants. Once at the sanctuary and living on soft, natural surfaces, many elephants see improvement in foot problems.
A coalition of San Antonio activists needs your help to urge city leaders to do everything in their power to help Lucky, including sponsoring a resolution to send her to a sanctuary.
Please make a call or send a letter today!
Please write a polite letter to Mayor Phil Hardberger and the following city council members and let them know that:
It is cruel to keep Lucky in solitary confinement.
-
Lucky shows signs of foot disease caused by decades of life in a tiny, inadequate exhibit; she must removed immediately from that damaging environment.
-
The City of San Antonio should do the right thing and show it cares about Lucky's welfare by sponsoring a resolution to send her to a sanctuary.
-
Lucky's sorry condition is a black eye for the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Zoo.

Polar Bears and Global Warming
Current mood: hopeful
Yet another reason to adopt a vegan diet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8Y2mFUnmqM
The polar bears in this video are running out of space, and food, so are forced into cannibalism! Two out of three of the major greenhouse gases are largely generated through livestock production--specifically factory farming. The struggle these polar bears are going through is unacceptable! By adopting a vegan diet, you will not be contributing to the factory farm industry which is accelerating global warming dramatically!

Whales
Current mood: sad
While in Santiago, Chile for the 60th Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), Sea Shepherd Conservation Society officially announced plans to return to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary to once again oppose illegal Japanese whaling activities. Sea Shepherd is represented at the IWC by Captain Paul Watson, Founder and President of Sea Shepherd, and the Honourable Ian Campbell, former Minister of the Environment for Australia and current member of Sea Shepherd's international Advisory Board.
This year's campaign, Sea Shepherd's fifth campaign to Antarctic waters, will be called Operation Musashi in reference to the legendary Japanese strategist, Miyamoto Musashi. Musashi's Book of Five Rings included the approach of the Twofold Way of Pen and Sword. Sea Shepherd's goal is to send two fast ships to the Southern Ocean with the purpose of continuously keeping the Japanese whaling fleet on the run.
"We intend to sink the Japanese fleet economically," said Captain Watson. "Our strategy is to prevent whales from being killed, to force Japan to spend money on fuel without killing whales. My crew and I will not watch whales die, we will not bear witness to the cruel slaughter of a single whale without risking our lives to prevent its unlawful and cruel murder. If the members of the IWC refuse to act to save the whales, then it is up to us to take this fight onto the high seas where we will prevail in the next season even more successfully than we prevailed in the last season."
The name Operation Musashi was chosen to reflect Sea Shepherd's approach of aggressive, yet nonviolent, confrontation and the increasing global awareness of Japan's ongoing illegal whaling activities; thus the crossed feather pen and katana (sword) under the skull with the imbedded sperm whale and dolphin yin-yang symbol. The Banzai flag background gives reference to the ecological imperialism that Japan is committing against the whales of the Southern Ocean.
Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645) was the greatest samurai warrior, strategist, and tactician of all time and is a personal role model and hero of Captain Watson, who incorporated Musashi's ideas into his bookEarthforce! An Earth Warriors Guide to Strategy. Sea Shepherd intends to transform Setsuninto - the sword {harpoon} that takes life - to Katsujinken - the sword {harpoon} that gives life. Sea Shepherd's ship, the Steve Irwin, will be outfitted with a very special harpoon for this year's campaign. Sea Shepherd is not a protest organization. It was established in 1977 to intervene against the illegal exploitation of marine life in accordance with the principles of the United Nations World Charter for Nature. However, as with all Sea Shepherd campaigns, all strategies and tactics are designed to avoid any physical injury to the whalers.
"We have never injured a single person in our 31 year history," said Captain Watson, "and we intend to keep that record unblemished."
