MORE PRESS:

Shawne Malik
(2 track reviews and general comments)
Standards of a Rock Album
A merry send-up of rock and roll clichés, Standards of a Rock Album attacks ready-made music for the masses through detached observation, commercialized hooks and youthful glamour. The satirical whimsy, however, is anchored in the tuneful Britpop movement; drunken vocals and driving piano give the song its shape, but it is the thickly distorted guitar-pop solo, straight from Brian Eno..s Here Come the Warm Jets, that provides swagger with a wink and nod. All of this vintage sensibility is underlined by subtle background noise, reminiscent of the ethereal productions of My Bloody Valentine. The punch line comes with the final bar of music as the piano motif descends into cabaret territory .. Da Bears may be poking fun at rock and roll conventions, but instead of facing them with a scowling diatribe, they do it with a bright-eyed grin.
Galactic Cannibalism
A noisy introduction of feedback leads into the homophony of a singularly deranged theme and incomprehensible vocals. As the song progresses, you feel awash in its simple charm, which is equally exciting, carefree, crashing and incoherent. This is postmodern surf music, paying tribute to its originators The Ventures and Dick Dale, but without sounding anything like its inspiration. Instead, Da Bears infuse their theme with the bravado of scuzz-rock and the venomous bite of rabid art. You are engaged by the song..s hypnotic spell, and it sticks with you after the final notes are long left ringing in the atmosphere. This is the musical equivalent of a highly quotable one-liner from your favorite movie. In a word, Galactic Cannibalism is relentless.
Da Bears.. music looks back to a time when rock and roll was a little more fun and a lot less serious. They sound bright and shiny, easily treading the vast expanses of previously explored pop and rock territory, but the implied baroque sophistication of their music is anachronistically guided by a sense of humor straight from the current Generation Y. The bubblegum flavor of Da Bears.. male-female vocal counterpoints tugs the band into lovely regions of crafted melodic pop, while their left-handed tendencies pull them towards raw, eruptive rock noise. The juxtaposition of bright light and loud gestures allow Da Bears to transgress their influences and present their audience with something to smile about.
But let us digress from the verbose miasma of affected hyperbole. Da Bears sound fiery and alive, playing their instruments as if the concept of music was their own personal creation. This gang of youth brings a palpable sense of excitement and fun to their songs, and their attitude is not only witty, but also likeable. Da Bears offer an irreverent blend of pop architecture fused with a keen appreciation for surf-rock melodies and original rock and roll style. Think of it this way: Listening to Da Bears.. music is like wearing nothing but a flesh-tone leotard into a crowded room .. it will grab the attention of everyone in its path, but more importantly, it just feels good.

Brandan Glendenning - www.moreinput.org (full review on site)
Da Bears like their instruments. They seem to have a great understanding of counterpoint, which could be a result of the utterly confusing recording process and lineup they've got. Ryan Solomon says he did about half the bass, but David Damasso is listed as the credit for the bass, which means there should be approximately 1 1/2 bass going on. there is, however, only one.
Da Bears are a gateway band, the band that is so good stupid people can listen to it and slowly start to realize how interesting and subtle music can be. It turns people on to thinking about music without them having to ever really think about it.
They take modern styles and exploit them, abuse them, neglect them and give them a big group hug in the end because they love them and never meant to hurt them. They celebrate pop music by making it better rather than allowing it to settle. They beat the pop right out of pop, and hang the music out to dry, where it collects pollen and makes you sneeze when you're trying to sleep.
Yes, this music is so good that it will make you sneeze at night by carrying pollen on soundwaves. It defies all logic! First there was jazzercise, and now there is exerpop, with the added benefit of no physical requirements beyond being awake and in a mental state to be aware of music. The best part is you require no active effort in becoming better at listening. Da Bears can make you a better person without your permission, and that is making a statement in the sense of music as an expressive, artistic medium.
This is the kind of music that makes nonmusicians want to become musicians, and musicians want to become better musicians. It is young, fresh, creative and relative to the youthful generation. When I think about the things I want to represent my age I don't want to think of some shitty 40 year old guys trying to figure out what I like and singing about it.
The World Famous Da Bears is at once monumentally sad and ultimately resigned. A cyborg charlie brown for an aural representation of that first christmas you found out santa claus just doesn't exist, but you still got a nintendo with a copy of super mario and duck hunt, and found out that there are other ways to escape the harsh reality of the absence of santa claus. Only now you've grown up, and you're starting to realize a few things.

Da Bears: Yesterday and Onwards

To start, we'd love to thank everyone who made it out to our show last night! We hope you enjoyed it, and regardless, we'd love to hear what you thought about it. Please leave us feedback! In one way the LAST SHOW part is true. A lot of the boys are leaving for college and we probably wont have a chance to play live again until late December.

But, the spirit of Da Bears lives on forever. Similar to last year about this time, the rest of us will not be idle. We currently have plans to release a brand new ~8 song E.P. before X-Mas. Beyond that the future is uncertain, but stay tuned for updates on the recording process and possible live appearances. Thanks again.

The album is complete!!

Exactly 5 months later than originally planned. But it was worth it, I think we'll all agree.

It is finally done in its entirety, and we're planning on getting it pressed with cases, art, shrinkwrap, the whole 9 yards.

BUT! If you want it NOW, we are offering a sort of digital presale deal. For $5, we'll send you the .zip containing all 15 songs with original tags, and then ALSO send you a hardcopy when they are pressed. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal! (We plan on selling them for $6 when we have the copies, so why not get it now and save a buck?)

Send a message if you are interested in this offer.
