Something I am apart of
Category: Jobs, Work, Careers
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y37/daizy14209/PITC198-1.jpg
This is something that we have recently been discussing in our PITC meetings. This was put into the paper that Sierra Nevada Children Services puts out. I thought Jackie made a good point.
It might be a little hard to read, here is what is says:
Children of the Military
By:Jackie Herring, Child Development Manager
On
Jan 17th, six childcare provicers began Plan 3 of the Program for Infant /Toddler Care (PITC) The program for Infant/Toddler Care is a collaboration between WestEd and the California Department of Education. The PITC approuch shows caregivers ways of helping infants learn through six giuding principles. These six program pricibles, which are the basis of the training, are; continuity; individualized care; cultural responsiveness; and, inclusion of children with special needs. These policies create a climate for care that reinforces a responsive, relationship based approach. They allow relationships, to develop and deepen over time between caregivers and the children as well as between caregivers and the children's families.
Our class that night was an introductory class to Plan 3 of the PITC training series. Although we did discuss the basis of the upcomming training i.e. care responsibilities, scheduling, meeting times, etc., the primary topic for this class session centered on children of diployed military personnel. Issues regarding caregivers who work with these children were discussed as were the feelings we personally hold regarding military and war. Our own baises, our values and feelings, come into play when we work and interact with children. During this training, we discussed our own beliefs surrounding war, guns, and common preactice of redirecting children when they begin "fighting" or useing materials as weapons. As a child of the military in my early years, with an educational background in child development, I have often struggled with these issues. I shared my feelings that I had growing up as a little girl with a father in the Air Force. "How is it that guns are bad and fighting is bad and yet my dad has a gun and he fights for our country?" The photo above is of myself when I was about 3 years old, standing in my father's combat boots dressed in nothing more than my diaper. I remember wondering where those boots had been and when would I see my father walk away with them again, his return unknown.
Annie Toor, our facilitator, introduced us to an absorbing video of military families and child care providers who have cared for children of military personnel. We heard first hand the concerns both parents and child care providers have for these children. We also learned ways of assisting these children in dealing with their world. It is important to be cognizant of various cultures, not just those based on race or ethnicity. The military has a very different culture of which many of us are unaware. And cargivers, many of whom have no military background or connection, must be aware of the specific challenges in working with children of military persons.

Time to air my dirty laundry...or not
Current mood: bored
Category: Life
k so I have never written a blog about my feelings or whats going on in my life except for the occasional hey I got a tattoo or new peircing.....so here it goes....I read everyone else's blog and its usually full of omg hes cheating or omg this dramma or that dramma is happening, wtf? I guess I'm just not the kind of person who likes to air my dirty laundry on the web for everyone to find....my life is pretty much great, I have a wonderful husband, just had a new baby, looking forward to moving in April, maybe start up my daycare again..we will see what happens. My husband is working a lot which in a lot of ways sucks because I feel like a single parent and I never get any time to myself. But I can't complain because I know he would rather be home with his wife and kids than working his ass off all the time. So I am home most of the time besides picking up or dropping off kids at school. I help a lot in my son's class. I got voted to be on the parent board at his school, I pretty much help with everything at his school. Things with Rebecca's mom has improved, who would have thought we would be friends, for those who have known me for a while, you know what went on. I'm glad that dramma is out of my life, now we can move on. I'm really glad that were not fighting anymore because our desicions regarding Rebecca aren't clouded with I hate him/her.....I also think Rebecca enjoys it more also, she doesn't have to deal with going to court, which she says she doesn't remember any of it, so I am glad about that. So there is no real dramma in my life, which I love. The only dramma which comes and goes is my mother, but I will leave it at that for now....I have officially somewhat aired my laundry lol.....hope everyone has a wonderful "07" and to all my friends old and new, I love you all, thank you for being there...
