I've polished my manuscript. I've polished my query. I've made a list of agents who accept my genre and am only querying them. I'm sticking to Times New Roman, 12pt with 1 inch margins. I'm being polite. I'm being patient (or at least not letting the world see me when I'm not patient). I'm not complaining, or snapping back at you when I get rejected. I'm not posting your rejections or even mentioning them on my blog.
I am trying to show you respect and make your job easier.
Now here's a few things you can do to make this whole process easier on me.
Ah-hem.
1. Email Auto responder. Especially if you do not reply to queries you aren't interested in. When I don't get a response, I don't assume I've been rejected. I assume my mail has gotten lost. Please consider a short auto response message, so I know my mail did land in your in box and I don't waste your time or mine by re-querying.
2. Have a web presence. Agentquery.com, Querytracker.net, litmatch.net, Publisher's Marketplace. I check ALL of these places out to make sure that I really, truly am querying you with in a genre you represent. I'm not asking for a fancy website, or pictures, or wit and wisdom. Just guidelines. Really just a list of accepted genres. Because I've seen "fantasy" listed as accepted by a lot of agents who disagree on their web pages. I don't expect all the listing sites to get it right, which is why I check all of them. Of course, I could just check your site, or see that a listing has been approved by you. Wouldn't that save us both time?
Well, that just about sums it up. That doesn't seem like too much. And remember, I'm trying to make your job easier for both of us.
Bye Bye Spring Break
Current mood: satisfied
Category: Life
Monday means back to school, and back to work. Not a bad thing, but I was just getting used to everyone being home.
I did some work, had some fun, indulged in things I enjoy other than writing. A meeting about my son for the first time in a while, left me feeling good, rather than frustrated.
My 4 year old daughter "read" us this story just a bit ago. It's too good not to share.
"One day I was walking and I met a potato walking around. It had incredible arms and legs. And it had heads too. The potato was walking and met a chicken nugget. The chicken nugget was the bad guy. The chicken nugget grabbed my ass."
At which point we couldn't hear how it ended because we were laughing too hard.
Right now I'm sitting here, with a post storm breeze coming through the window, listening to laughter and Bones and drinking Chai tea. Sure it won't last more than a moment, but hey, it's a good moment.
Now for something lighter
Current mood: jolly

Just so you know I'm not feeling down or anything. In fact, it's the opposite. I'm sort of feeling my Wheaties.
It's spring break. Everyone is home, and was doing well (up until last night). My husband recently got a clean bill of health and a prescription for Ambien to help his insomnia, both of which are good. I got a lot of work done in the yard, all my flower seeds except one have been planted, and I got my first, brief sunburn of the season planting them.
We bought a grill and Jason cooked, which was both delicious (I loved grilled foods!) and a night off without going out to eat. We bought a car! And after a tune up and a few fixes we'll be able to drive places, like the grocery store.
So with the exception of some kiddo fighting today all is well. I want you all to be well too, so here's a funny.
Organizations, the nature of writing and loneliness
Current mood: artistic
There are millions of writers out there. You can barely sign on to the net without tripping over them. They come in all shape sizes, styles, and levels. From "I’ve always wanted to write a book" to "I’m writing a book (for ten years now)" to "Hey, here’s a link to my latest self pub/story in a 4theluv market" to "I got a call from an agent!" and even "I’m running for president of [writers organization] based on fifteen years of pro sales".
Some days it seems like everyone is a writer. Some days it feels like everyone’s doing better than you.
You feel alone, like no one understands. You feel like you’re fighting to walk up a steep hill with weight dragging behind you and you don’t have a clue on how to fix whatever’s wrong with you and your work so you can finally proceed forward.
You cling desperately to the few bonding moment you have with writers who have been there, particularly if they were there before you and are now past you. But when it comes down to it it’s just you sitting there, with pen and paper, or in front of a computer screen. It’s just you eyeing prose you know will sell, but aren’t sure why you keep getting nos. You’re the one reading editor and agent blogs, sample copies and writing tips. You’re alone when you wonder if your dialog is snappy enough, your plot is intricate enough, your characters are real enough. It’s just you spewing words out, going back and fixing them, sending them out, breath catching every time you go to check your mail. It’s just you wondering if you’ve done enough, if you’ve missed something, if your timing is good enough to hit a trend, or if you’re looking for water in a desert.
And that can be an overwhelming thing. So maybe you join a group online. Or a writers’ organization. You go to a convention. Maybe you desperately talk with everyone you run into, feeling like a fool afterwards, but needing that human connection.
Because everyone may be a writer. But being a writer is largely being alone. A crew of one on a small ship, looking for islands in the vast sea.
Sometimes it’s a vicious cycle. You need other people, because we’re social things. But no one can do it for you. No one has the full information to make the choices. So you reach out, and at least half of the responses you get are no, or "you should do it my way" or "you just must not be good enough". There’s the occasional "You aren’t worth my time unless you are a professional/published by so and so/win this award". There’s the organizations that do nothing for you. The crit groups where you make sure to critique everyone’s story, even though it’s not required, but only one person responds to yours. You take time away from family and writing and life in general to better the genre, to make the publishing world better. You put up with people who only want to take, you get lost in the shuffle. People just assume you can do things they’re "too busy" to do.
But you do it anyway, because some days if you aren’t being taken advantage of, you’re just alone. And if you don’t have a deal or something coming out, or that has just come out then you’re alone and a failure.
So writers, it comes down to, do you like yourself? Are you okay with being alone? Because that’s what writing is, being alone. Because no one else can do it for you.
