FINALLY! FREE April Edition of Dark Recesses Press Now LIVE!
Current mood: busy
Category: Writing and Poetry
It’s taken longer than I wanted, what with the techno-gremblins eating all my stuff and time, but it’s finally here.
There are 4 new pieces of fiction and an article with Garry Charles in this one, along with a generous little thank you by way of the DejaVu Horror Contest winner (deadline for the next contest is the end of this month BTW) and Part 1 of the Waverly Hills article. A little something to tease.
You will notice some adjustments to the PDF if you’ve been a loyal follower, most notably the lack of art. This is by design right now, but may change in the future. The PDF is a scaled back version of what it was in order to focus the efforts on our print editions, while at the same time still offering great fiction in a quality format for those who just want to test drive, or want to see what we do before submitting!
At last check, before losing our primary e-mail accounts, we had submissions pending from November 11, 2007 onward. If you had submitted anything to us from that time forward and had not heard a response back, I ask you now to please re-submit. If you submitted something before that time and did not receive a response it means we never received your submission.
If you know the original date of your submission, please include this in the subject line. Your subject line should look like this: SUBMISSION - DATE
If you have submitted to our DejaVu Horror Contest, please re-submit. Your subject line MUST look like this: CONTEST SUBMISSION
If you had submitted an art query, please resend this as well. Your subject line should read: ART QUERY
Please note that we have lost ALL contact information in this e-mail mess, so if you are awaiting a response from myself or one of our staff, we do not have the information on file to respond. As such, any queries should be re-sent with the subject line that contains: QUERY
JM MCDERMOTT - PLEASE send an e-mail with your contact information.
I thank you for your patience and understanding during this technically turbulent time.
Technical Info For Dark Recesses Submitters
Category: Writing and Poetry
Hello;
Dark Recesses uses a web-based mail system in order for all our editors to be able to access the slush. I also felt that this would be a safer way to handle the slush in case of computer issues (such as I am having now).
That said, it appears we are having problems with our e-mail system at the moment, as well as being unable to update our news page to inform folks.
I am awaiting information from our host, but at this point we are unable to attend to our slush pile. We have read up to mid-November. I do not know right now if we have lost anything, or if we are just unable to access the information.
Anyone who has received notification that their work has been pushed past the gate is safe as we have all that housed in another area. For those who have not received word yet, I may have to put out a call for you to re-submit. I would like to wait till the end of this week to find out for certain what is going on. If I have not heard by then, I will provide a new e-mail address for you to submit your work to.
I am terribly sorry for this inconvenience and I hope we are able to work through it as quickly and as positively as possible.

I'm very excited. Yes I am.

(By the way, I'd LOVE to hear what those who have received their copy think. You can send those thoughts to letters@darkrecesses.com or post them here if you feel like it. So far the word on the 'street' is it looks GREAT - happy customers are always good.)
Between its gorgeous covers you will find 54 pages packed with all the quality you've come to expect from Dark Recesses Press.
This issue contains 6 pieces of dark fiction - each accompanied by artwork, PLUS our Deja Vu Horror Contest winner - Theme: Lycanthrope.
There's an interview with Brian Keene and another with co-producer of THE GIRL NEXT DOOR, two book reviews (including John Everson's NEEDLES & SINS), a movie review of THE GIRL NEXT DOOR and Part 1 of an in depth article on Waverly Hills Sanitorium.

Seriously though now...
If you do enjoy Dark Recesses Press and want to show it in an easy, non-monetary way, I've got a couple of links for you.
First one is for the Preditors & Editors Readers Poll. Last year Dark Recesses Press made the top ten for Fiction e-zine Magazines, and of course, we'd love to rank well again. This is purely on the opinions of those who read us - like you. If you think we deserve a vote, please cast one. Tell all your friends too! heh heh. Here's the link for this: http://www.critters.org/predpoll/crunchpoll.cgi (I noticed that under short stories, we have a showing as well, best of luck to John Peters with Warren House!) Deadline for this is January 15th, so only a few more days to make it count.
The second is the Black Quill Award, which I mentioned earlier. Here's a re-cap on that one:
http://www.darkscribemagazine.com/nominees is where you will find the list of Black Quill Award Nominees. Dark Recesses Press sits under the Nominees for Best Dark Genre Short Fiction Magazine (along with the likes of Cemetery Dance, Chiaroscuro, Postscripts and others).
You have to register (for free) to cast your vote on the many categories available (info on how to do that at the bottom of their page). I'm not exactly certain when the voting cut-off for this is, but it is this month.
If you feel we are worth your vote, please let your voice be heard.
If you click that link you will see under the category of Best Dark Genre Short Fiction Magazine, my little venture called Dark Recesses Press. I've just found out - it was posted up at one of the main horror/genre fiction boards.
It's a readers poll for voting, but I didn't even submit DRP to be nominated - so it was totally unexpected.
You have to register (for free) to cast your vote on the many categories available (info on how to do that at the bottom of their page).
I'm immensely proud of everyone at Dark Recesses Press right now - on both sides of the page. We wouldn't be anywhere without the wonderful people working behind the scenes or the authors and artists that fill its pages.
Tonight I am filled with a humbling honour for all those who have been a part of Dark Recesses Press.
The cover artist for this horrific and gripping tale is Daniele Serra. He has been wonderful to work with and has brought to LIFE SUSPENDED, the atmosphere and power it deserves.
A reminder that if you would like to be informed of when pre-orders are available and any other breaking news, please join the Dark Recesses Press Pit. Notices are only posted when new information is available, and all questions are responded to.
I would like to welcome Mark E. Deloy into the DRP family. His novel, LIFE SUSPENDED will be the first title published under the Dark Recesses Press umbrella. It is slated to debut at the World Horror Convention, March 2008 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The cover artist for this horrific and gripping tale has already been selected. Daniele Serra, has done several covers for various authors/publishers and I feel he will bring to LIFE SUSPENDED, the atmosphere and power it deserves.
The printers have been selected based on previous press jobs which I have been involved with. This has allowed to me to see first hand the professional quality of their product and I am confident that they will meet my very high standards.
Early in the New Year (2008) we will make pre-orders available from the DRP site. If you would like to be informed of this and any other breaking news, I invite you to join the Dark Recesses Press Pit. Notices are only posted when new information is available, and all questions are responded to.
Once again, welcome Mark. We are pleased to be able to provide a well deserved home for your novel.
What do all these names have in common. They each have a spot on the (mostly) final TOC for Dark Recesses Press - Vol.3 Issue 9 - our first print issue after two years as digital only.
Êíèãà Æèçíè - Sean Melican (the title is in Russian but roughly translates to The Book of Life.)

NiNe QuestioNs with BriaN KeeNe by A.J. BrowN
Part 1 of a two part, in-depth article on Waverly Sanitorium by Chris Perridas
A Nick Cook Review of NEEDLES & SINS by John Everson
The Deja Vu Horror Contest winner is yet to be announced as deadline for entries is not yet upon us (you have till Midnight October 31st, 2007 to send me your Lycanthrope Masterpiece).
I am working towards getting a proper shop page set up on our site and at that time will have options for pre-order and subscriptions available.
This will be a perfect bound, 8.25 x 10.75 magazine of approximately 68-70 pages, with a full colour glossy cover and b/w interior on bright white smooth stock.
This is NOT being printed through Lulu.com
It will be available January, 2008 through the Dark Recesses website, Cutting Block.net website, Horror Library website as well as a couple other places as I finalise those details.
We are both pleased and excited about the line-up we've procured and hope you will join us as we venture into this new format.
