Our series 'Room 401' is airing on MTV. I created a large portion of the material that you'll see us performing, and I'm also a cast member.
The show's executive producers include Ashton Kutcher, Jason Goldberg, and Billy Rainey and it was created by my friends Rico De La Vega and Chris Gongora.
We used hidden cameras to capture the real reactions of unsuspecting people as they were put into a world of horror.
Yesterday, I returned from the I.B.M. Gold Cups close up magic competition in Reno, Nevada.
Competitions are emotionally challenging. No matter how good you are, you're forced to look at yourself through an honest lens ...to replace comfort and satisfaction with dissatisfaction and growth.
Basically, you run the risk of being beaten. And, that risk is humbling.
With over 13,000 magicians worldwide in 73 countries, the I.B.M. is the world's largest organization of magicians. Each year they hold an international 2-day magic competition.
This year, I entered the competition for the first time.
Now THIS... is a good story.
Current mood: Awestruck
Yesterday, I got a call from a magician I know named Derek. He's on tour with the band Nickel Creek... opening for them with his magic show. In San Luis Obispo, he asks the audience if there is a kid who can come up on stage.
Sure enough, there are a few kids in the audience. A cute little girl named "Addison" comes up to help him. She's 7 years old and she's there with her parents to see Nickle Creek, her first concert ever. The crowd is cracking up because she's so cute.
Afterwards, she leaves the stage, but then she suddenly turns around and walks back up to the microphone. The crowd is laughing in disbelief because this little girl has so much gumption. Derek laughs and asks her if there is something else she wanted to say. Then the most random thing happens.
In front of several thousand people out there in 'Random Town' California she says, "Um... I was wondering if you know my uncle... David Minkin."
What are the odds?!!
I'm no mathematician... but I'm pretty sure it involves a decimal.
Today, I sent Addison this letter:
Dear Adi,
Thanks for the free "plug" in the middle of Derek's magic show. That kind of advertising is really valuable. Here's ten bucks.
I love you and miss you,
Uncle Dave
