Thinking About Starting A Business? Here Are Some Things To Think About.
Category: Jobs, Work, Careers

Many people are catching the work at home bug nowadays.  Before you take the leap into working from home, here are a few things you should thik about...

1. Is this something I'm passionate about?  You might be able to make a lot of money in a particular business but if you aren't excited about what you're doing, you won't succeed.

2.  Do I have the time to put into this business?  Contrary to what many informecials and ads will have you believe, running a business takes time.  It's not something that you can do with only 1 or 2 hours in the week.  Make sure you have the time to devote to your business before you start it.

3.  Do I have enough starting capital?  This is very important since you need money to advertise, host your website, and other things.  I would advise waiting until you have some money saved up for these expenses before starting your busieness.

4.  You should also plan who your target market is going to be before you start your business.  This will help you with your marketing and advertising efforts.

For more information on starting your own business, read my Learn Small Business Blog.

Article: More Gets Done In Groups

More Work Gets Done In A Group

By Denise Landers

We are all subjected to the tyranny of the urgent – those quick questions, phone calls, email, and other interruptions that have to handled.  Several days may pass, and then we look back and wonder what happened to that time.  We've been pumped up and running on adrenaline, yet we still haven't accomplished the projects on our To Do list - those items that are "important" for developing our business rather than just the "urgent" immediate requests. Interruptions caused by this tyranny of the urgent can be the biggest time-waster in our day.

Studies show that we can be four times more efficient when we work on one type of activity at a time than when we switch back and forth from one thing to another.  To take advantage of this method of efficiency, schedule blocks of time each day so that the primary causes of interruptions are grouped together.

What activities are effective when grouped?

- Telephone:  Plan for a block of time in your daily schedule when you will make and return  phone calls.  This doesn't mean that you don't accept an urgent, unexpected call, but work toward keeping the routine calls in your time block.  If you have an assistant, train that person to take a message and let the caller know what time you will be returning the call.

- Voice Mail:  Many of us don't like voice mail, but it can be a powerful tool, especially if you work alone.  Let the voice mail take the messages that don't fall into your telephone time block.  The voice mail message can state that you will return calls between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., and then between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., or however your schedule is set up for that day.  Your telephone block can vary from day to day.  Just be sure your voice mail message reflects the changes.  Resist the temptation to check your voice mail after the phone has picked up the message.  Again, use a time block for checking your messages just before your telephone calling starts.  Otherwise you're still letting the telephone interrupt you.

- Email:  It is very easy to allow email to dominate our time, especially if we are working close to our computer.  That "You've Got Mail" message, whether verbal or just sound, is hard to ignore.  Even stopping to take a quick look to see who it is from becomes an interruption.  You've lost time working on the project you were involved in because it takes more minutes to get back into focus and regain your train of thought.  Turn off the sound that alerts you to every message coming in.  Just as with telephone calls, set blocks of time each day where you will deal with all the email messages together.

- Bill Paying:  Whether dealing with personal bills at home, or with office matters, it is not efficient to stop and write checks every day or two.  I've even seen people write them as they come in because they are afraid that otherwise the bills will get lost, or they will forget.  Those are situations where other assistance is needing in setting up a system to manage papers.  Again, group your bill paying and other accounting activities together for once a week or for every other week, depending on volume.

- More:  Consider the other tasks that occur frequently throughout your week.  Which similar activities can you group?

It will take time to get used to controlling interruptions rather than allowing those constant interruptions throughout your day to control you.  However the payback in time gained is well worth the effort it takes to develop a new habit.

What To Do When You Don’t Know What To Do
Category: Jobs, Work, Careers

What To Do When You Don't Know What To Do

By Anna Johnson

One of the toughest choices you're bound to confront throughout your career is what job or career choice is right for you?

So in an effort to help you find the "ideal" job or career you may ask yourself, "what do I want to do?" But that question may do more harm than good. Unfortunately, you may not be able to come up with an answer that really helps you... if you think of an answer at all. This may be because you don't know what you want to do... or because there are just too many things you want to do... or because it's a loaded question: it implies that there must be one answer, which you just can't decide on.

Well, I'm here to tell you that you don't have to have an answer to the question of what you want to do. Indeed, if you want an "answer" to help you in your quest to find a fulfilling career, I urge you to ask yourself something else: what do you want to learn? And, in answering this question, I recommend you get a piece of paper or load up Notepad on your computer and write out all the work-related skills and knowledge you'd like to acquire. Now, arrange each thing you want to learn in order of priority. Finally, consider what careers or jobs will probably teach you what you want to know in the priority you want to know it.

Just keep in mind that you may not be able to learn everything from one career, job or company. And what you want to learn may change too.

Nevertheless, you have a solid idea of what skills and knowledge you want now, and which jobs or careers are likely to deliver these skills and knowledge.

Now, as you can tell, there's an assumption here: that basing your next career move on what you most want to learn is the best way to find a fulfilling career. Although you could certainly base your next career choice on other factors - like more pay - I do consider that if you're unhappy in your current job or career and want to make a change but don't know what to, then this approach is your best chance.

Hence, stop worrying about what you want to do - or worrying that you don't know what you want to do - and instead consider what you want to learn. Not only are you more likely to learn the things you want to learn, but you're also more likely to arrive at job(s) and career(s) (be there one or many) that fulfill you.

Make Money Blogging Online

Make Money Blogging Online-your Blogging Guide

By Joel Teo

Making money online by blogging is very possible if you have the knowledge or are willing to learn what you do not already know. There are a few steps to follow if you want to make money from blogging. If you do not already have a blog started, there are several websites available that offer free blogging, all that is necessary is that you sign up. There is no fee involved, and it is very simple. Blogger.com is one of the easiest free sites to use, and it has been around for over fifteen years. This free blogging site and others like it offer tutorials to get you started if you have never blogged before.

Once you have registered for the site you will need to set up your profile and templates. Once this is done you are ready to start making money. The first thing that you will need is traffic, and preferably targeted traffic. This means traffic that is interested in what you say on your blog. Getting this traffic can be done in a couple of different ways. One way is to comment on other blogs, and some readers will follow your comments back to your site. Make sure your posts reflect your blog interests, and try to respond, not just a two or three word phrase. If your comments are interesting and informative then you will get more targeted traffic.

Signature forum posts are another great way to get targeted traffic to your own blog website. If you already belong to one of these then you simply add your blog URL to your forum signature and then you post some comments. It is important not to spam, and to leave informative or interesting comments. Other members of these forums will want to hear more and they will come to your blog.

Once your blog starts to get targeted traffic then it is time to start making some money off of the blog. Adsense is a terrific way to do this. Open an account and once it is approved then choose the type of ad you wish to display on your blog. Once the ad is installed then you should start making some money in your adsense account. Affiliate programs are another way to make money with your blog, so it is a good idea to join some that share common interests with your own blog.

Making money by blogging is not hard if you know what to do. Start a blog on one of the free sites if you do not already have one. Then get some traffic to your blog, preferably targeted traffic. Put some ads on your blog from Adsense or another program that pays for advertising. Join some affiliate programs that share common interests with your blog. By following these tips, making money online by blogging is quick and easy.
