A group of Happy Tails volunteers worked at the Best Friends Rescue Center in Tylertown, MS and brought back 6 dogs and 2 cats to care for. Sydney...random thoughts at 2:19am
I've been here four days. People are nice. People are not too happy about the United States. Some people think Minneapolis is in Canada. People do not like George Bush. I like the people here.
When I order a coffee here, I've learned to ask for a, "Long Black." Different. I also learned passing people driving on the road is called, "overtaking". The other day was Australia Day, I've been told it's like Columbus Day back home-need to do more research. One other addition to my education of Australia is workers get paid more to work holidays, and if you're a customer in some places, they'll charge you an extra 10% for their service on that holiday. Also, the people here can drink, love to drink and give a new meaning to the definition of drunk. A guy just randomly started singing to a full audience at a Thai restuarant tonight, funny. The police sirens here sound like a sick cow. Lastly, there's a rap group here from Adelaide called, "Hilltop Hoods"- when they played at BDO there was about 10,000 kids that know every word. One word, large. I went to check out Rise Against open for System of Down at some venue near Fox Studios. Amazing show. It's always good to see a Chicago group rock in another country. Props. I had some serious Warped Tour flashbacks.
I got the pleasure of seeing Murs while I was here. He always makes me smile and makes my day better. Murs is the homey. Vegan food rules dawg.
The other day, after The Big Day Out, there was an after party with a full open bar all night. I left at 4:00am, others with me got back to the hotel after 8:00am. I have a new respect for the after party. Crazy drunk people. Crazy drunk people in bands. Crazy.
I found a great comic book store here, called, "Comic Kingdom"- two floors...what a great place. If I had enough time, I could have spent an entire day in that place.
The side show last night at Beck's Bar was one of the best shows yet. Ever been to a show that only served Becks Beer? I have now. The backstage room was in a old jail cell in a very old barracks building. We're convinced, it's haunted. Murs rocked with Slug- good times. DJ Spooky rocked the house as well. The whole show was filmed for TV. What was up with that dude pissing on the statue last night when we leaving?
Today, I got the pleasure of experiencing the Blue Mountain region. All I have to say is I saw parrots and cockatoos in a rain forest. Beautiful. Still no koalas, but seeing those birds in the wild blew my mind. There were some crazy lizards too. I also realized that winter back home is making me lazy and out of shape. Cold weather is not fun anymore.
Tomorrow, it's off to Melbourne. I wonder if we change time zones again?
Word to Blinky Bill...

BDO-GOLD COAST AUSTRALIA
Arrived in Australia. I haven't seen a koala yet, but I'm searching. Staying on the Gold Coast at an area called Surfer's Paradise. Man, I feel very lucky right now, especially since it's snowing in Minnesota and cold. It's summer here and my hotel room overlooks the South Pacific Ocean.
The Atmosphere show the other night in Brisbane went great, with an hour and half set. Two kids made their own Atmosphere shirts and were the first ones in the venue. Met a few really cool graf writers out here as well. My new favorite beer is J Boag. Did you know Burger King here is called, "Hungry Jacks?"
Yesterday, Atmosphere played the Big Day Out here. It was so hot outside. Before Atmosphere's set, Money Mark asked the band to sit in with him and they improvised a good portion of the set with him. Watching the Atmosphere band, along with DJ Koala and Money Mark freestyle a 45 minute set was the highlight of my day-no doubt. It was also pretty fun to watch Slug walk around in the audience while performing, "Always Coming Back Home To You." Good times.
Checked out a bit of Slipknot and System of a Down's sets. The after party went well into the morning hours. I departed the drunkeness at 4:00am. Got to love it.

Straight Out of Auckland...New Zealand
We've been in New Zealand for three days now, actually in a city called Auckland. Here's a few birdy notes yo:
1- Piah Beach is tight, if you wait until dusk you might see a penguin on the beach. 2- There is middle age white guy here walking around in a 1987 NWA tour shirt- I've seen him twice. If you get a picture of him, I'll send you a free Atmosphere t-shirt. 3- Yes, there's a Starbucks here, but I've been going to this cool indie spot called Alleluya in St. Kevin's Arcade. Very good, great people. 4- At the downstairs club at 4:20 (also the name of the club) every Thursday here there is a secret password that allows you to drink beer for free. Yesterday, the password was..."It's quite hot for a penguin to be walking around today." 5- A lot of vegetarian food here. Fresh for me. Fresh for you. 6- Even all the way in Auckland, New Zealand there are kids from San Diego, CA at the show. It's good to see friends from other places. 7- Look for the signs that say, "Cookie Time." 8- Good comic book shop- Heroes For Sale. 9- When you hear the chirping sounds it's alright to cross the street, even across the middle of the intersection. 10- Beware of freestyling kids from Hamilton, NZ. They spit on you when they rap. Not fun for me, especially after five different freestyles. Take a few paces back.
Tonight, Atmosphere plays Big Day Out. Geah.

A Week At The Entry
I spent eight consecutive days at the 7th Street Entry for these historical Atmosphere shows in Minneapolis. It's was weird basically having my office at First Ave. The conversations and the stories shared from the staff of First Ave and the 7th Street Entry were great. The only thing that really sucked is I was sick for the majority of the shows.
The fans who showed up were supportive beyond belief. there was one kid who fronted the line, I think everyday! Each day the line would beat me to the venue and I had to be there three hours before doors opened. One day it was so cold out, and there were like eight people in line waiting. I was on my way to Starbucks to get my second wind with some afternoon coffee, so I picked them up some hot chocolate. It was the least I could do.
Kids started bringing chairs and posted up earlier and earlier for the 50 available tickets. The first show that was at 8:00PM, there were people waiting at the venue at 1:00PM. I think they thought doors were at 5:00PM, so they waited for like seven hours. We were able to let them in a bit early, but damn I was cold just watching them. The weather was almost always around zero degrees or below each day! I still can't believe the response and level of enthusiasm. Crazy.
Over the eight shows we had a total of 2608 people come through the Entry's doors. Over the eight shows, there were twenty-one artists and six DJs supplying the music. Atmosphere played between an hour and thirty minutes to almost two hours some nights. People traveled from as far as California, Oklahoma City and Boston to be at the shows. To say the least, it was an amazing experience for me. I enjoyed playing records every night, even if some kid told me it was weak to play Snoop Dogg. Hah. I had a great time and felt honored to be part of the longest run at the 7th Street Entry...ever!
I still need to figure out my crate check for these shows...damn.

R.I.P ODB
Back in 1993, my job was doing street promotions in the Chicago and Milwaukee area. One of my accounts was Loud Records and they had a new group called Wu Tang Clan. I first met some of the members; Method Man, GZA and RZA when they came through Chicago to fill in for Fat Joe when he cancelled a show at the AC Club. After their new album dropped, I had the entire group in town to promote their new album and do a show at The Riv with.. I believe MC Eiht.
Before the show, we had a scheduled radio interview at 106 Jamz, which was outside of Chicago near the Indiana border. We drove in a van out to the radio station to do a show with on air personality and legend, Pinkhouse (R.I.P). Method Man and RZA primarily did the interview and then the entire group was set to record drops for the various DJS and shows on the station.
At this time, nobody could find Old Dirty Bastard. Everyone searched the station, but he was no where to be found. It became my job to find him. It was winter and about 15-20 degrees outside and snowing. The station was located right off highway 94 on a dead end street in a rather small building. After looking all around the station, in the van and outside the building, I finally found ODB pacing up and down the street. As I walked closer, I noticed he was freestyling, all by himself with nobody else around. I also noticed, he had no coat on. He was just rapping. Not only rapping, but really into what he doing-freestyling with all his emotions- unaware of the cold. It was pretty intense. As I walked up closer, feeling strange about interupting him; he just kept repeating over and over..."I love this shit...I love this shit." After a few more verses, he went back in the studio with me and participated in the recording of the drops for the station.
I had the pleasure of working with ODB on a few other memorable occassions in Chicago, Atlanta and New York. He was a great person and a talented addition to rap music. Although, my experiences with ODB were brief, he did have an impact on me. It was sad to hear the news of his passing late Saturday night.
