Help Stop a Second Slaughter
Current mood: disgusted
Category: Pets and Animals
In its last throes, the Bush/Cheney Administration has launched yet another attack on wolves in Greater Yellowstone -- re-packaging a proposal that could lead to the slaughter of as many as 1,000 of America's most iconic wild animals.
Tell the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that you think our wolves deserve a lasting future in the American West.
After several bloody months of wolf killing in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana, a federal judge ruled that the Bush Administration's original proposal to remove Endangered Species Act protections for the region's wolves was flawed and reinstated federal protections until the Administration came up with a better plan.
Now the Bush Administration is launching a last-ditch attempt to re-package and ram through a plan that could lead to the slaughter of as many as two-thirds of the wolves that live in the Greater Yellowstone area.
Don't let them get away with it. Urge federal officials to come up with a plan that ensures responsible and balanced management of our wolves.
In the last two years, caring people like you have sent tens of thousands of messages, made thousands of calls, and donated to help us fight the Bush/Cheney Administration and their allies in court, educate the public and support wolf-saving efforts in the field.
We need your help again now more than ever and we don't have much time. The Bush Administration is only accepting public comments until Friday, November 28th, so please take action now to stop this audacious 11th-hour sneak attack on our wolves at:

Stop the Bush/Cheney Assault on Endangered Species
Current mood: determined
Category: News and Politics
With just a few months left in power, the Bush/Cheney Administration has launched an unprecedented backdoor assault on America's endangered species!
For more than 30 years, the Endangered Species Act has protected wildlife at risk of extinction. Now the Bush/Cheney Administration wants to gut this landmark law by eliminating vital checks and balances that are crucial to protect our wolves, polar bears and other imperiled wildlife.
Speak out now for polar bears, wolves and the nearly 1,400 species currently protected under the Endangered Species Act! Visit the website below to urge your Representative and Senators to help stop this eleventh-hour assault on our endangered species:
My name is Chris Burley and I'm the Director of Online Campaigns at Defenders of Wildlife. I don't usually post here, but I've got something on my mind that I think needs saying.
Recently, my wife and I took a trip to the beach with my family and paid nearly twice as much to fill the tank as we had for the same trip a year earlier.
That kind of math forces families to make tough decisions -- not just about the family vacation, but also how to afford rent, what they can buy at the grocery store and how to pay for many other obligations.
But high gas prices are just one reason Congress needs to take real steps to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Global warming, pollution, the threat of oil spills and the risks from dependence on foreign oil -- the U.S. has less than 3% of the world's oil reserves -- all argue for a different approach to meeting America's energy needs.
1. Drilling off our coasts and in places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge will not lower gas prices today or solve our energy crisis;
2. Expanded drilling threatens permanent damage to wildlife; and
3. We need real solutions that will end our dependence on oil once and for all.
Unfortunately, Newt Gingrich, the high-priced lobbyists for Big Oil and their allies in Congress are all working feverishly to exploit consumer pain at the pump with one goal: more harmful oil and gas drilling in sensitive areas off our coasts and in precious areas like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
These short-sighted plans *will do nothing to reduce summer gas prices*. But drilling *will* fuel dependence on fossil fuels that harm our environment and threaten habitat for polar bears, sea turtles, dolphins and many other imperiled species.
As Defenders President Rodger Schlickeisen wrote earlier today, "It's time to rethink America's dependence on oil and gas. Together, we can create a sustainable future for American families and preserve the natural treasures that are the right of future generations."

Yellowstone’s Wild Bison Are Being Slaughtered (please share)
Some of America’s last free-roaming wild bison are being slaughtered on a scale not seen since the 1800s. And hundreds more could to be killed.
Take action now!Write the Montana Promotion Division -- the state’s tourism officials -- and speak out for sensible wildlife management of these American icons!
This year alone, more than 1,100 bison have been killed -- nearly a quarter of the wild population. This is no way to manage one of the most beloved icons of the American West. We need your voice to stop it.
