Interview on Channel 4's 4Talent website
*NEW* TEN4 Interview Check it out at Channel 4's website here. Or read below.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 23/07/07: TEN4 Follow Up Interview
Last year, they won 4Talent's Creative Class. This year, they're being filmed by French documentary-maker Stéphane Berthomieux. Ben Hutchinson meets electro-rock outfit Deluka and finds out what it's like to be filmed 24/7. Stars of tomorrow "Channel 4 were the first ones to really pick up on us - it was our first bit of real press." Deluka's guitarist Kris Kovaks is talking about winning 4Talent's creative class last year. Sitting with the band in a Birmingham venue they are soon to headline, it is clear they have been busy since receiving that accolade. Their brand of electro-fuelled rock has since spawned two singles, hit the play list of Radio1 and seen them record a session for 6music.
Having found fans in countries such as Italy and Canada via the Internet they are currently in talks to gain exposure in Japan. They are also soon to be the subject of a one-hour radio documentary in Germany. Rather than staying within the familiar confines of their Midlands base Deluka have also opted to spread their sound, touring not only the length and breadth of England but playing in Germany and Paris. Vive la France "On the first day he walked into the rehearsal room, he didn't say 'Hi, I'm Stéphane', he just pointed a camera me" When Deluka played in Paris, the band were warned: "In this venue, the crowd don't dance, they're too cool." Deluka played - they danced, the Parisian crowd succumbing to the infectious beats, the riffs, and the downright sexy vocals. It was this gig that led to the band's upcoming documentary made by French filmmaker Stéphane Berthomieux.
Stéphane's original intention was to court Wendy James' (ex-Transvision Vamp) new outfit, but after witnessing Deluka live, he instead asked them to be his next subject. "On the first day he walked into the rehearsal room filming, he didn't say 'Hi, I'm Stéphane', I just had a camera pointed at me" says drummer Stevie Palmer. "We got into the swing of things pretty quickly." 24 hour party people "Not that we strictly believe in fate, but it felt like we were meant to meet him and make this documentary" This upfront introduction set the tone for what would be a week long filming session. When the band asked what the narrative aim of the documentary would be, they were told: "Your life will be your story."
This led to the filmmaker staying with them 24 hours a day, getting access to and exploring their relationships and dynamics without restriction. In all, over 30 hours of footage was collected which will be transformed into a 30 minute documentary. Fate no more "Having the film as a bonus feature on an album would be great" "Il n'y a pas d' hazard" ("there are no chances") became a mantra for the band during the week and now adorns their MySpace page. "Not that we strictly believe in fate, but it felt like we were meant to meet him and make this documentary," lead singer Ellie Innocenti explains.
The film is now in the editing stage and the band is excited from the stills they have seen and the prospect of the forthcoming trailer. Stéphane's recent documentary on Anglo-American band The Kills has been aired on French TV and is currently being shown at documentary festivals across Europe. It is exposure like this that the band are looking for. "If we could get it on Channel 4 or something it would be amazing," Ellie enthuses. "If we have it as a bonus feature on an album that would be great too," she adds. Surveillance nation "When we dropped Stéphane off at the airport we were quite sad" Whereas many would be glad to regain their freedom after a week's non-stop surveillance, the band felt quite the opposite. "When we dropped Stéphane off at the airport we were actually quite sad," confesses Stevie. Rather than relaxing however, Deluka will continue to build on the progress they have made since 4Talent first picked up on the band.
"Be yourself and don't try to be too cool, be yourself and enjoy playing," is Dan Brasco's advice to prospective entrants to this year's 4talent awards. "But be selective, you've got to know what you want," Kris continues. By the reaction the band have been getting it seems pretty clear what their burgeoning fan base want: more.
