August 20, 2008 - Wednesday

to keep you posted...

some weeks ago a book that had just been released caught my attention. it is called Grafherrie by old Amsterdam punk Remco Daalder. don't  know if we met in the days, but I was surprised about the book, in that it got some fairly good reviews and media attention. he wrote a sort of punk-novel about the eighties: mainly about the underground scene, concerts and squats where he hung out. after reading it, I felt a bit dissapointed, especially about the first two chapters where I was present myself. he left out so much what made that era so special: politics and solidarity. I felt that there was way more to be told. the book is a nice read, no question about that, but... it comes across as something easily done. I think it's mainly because Remco was a fun-punk in these days and was mainly interested in the music, although he also states what it really meant to him personally. in that respect I agree with him fully.

I never wrote much about those days, except some parts in
Indigo Blue and Red Impact for the first time. I never much cared for it and I certainly didn't want it to be something nostalgic.

and then last week it was all over the national news: a member of the Green Party and seated in parliament had to resign, because in a press release for his upcoming book he confessed a breaking and entering into a government building in the eighties, stealing secret plans for new nuclear facilities. he called it 'a success' because it caused quite a stir back then as polls and protest had shown that the overwhelming majority of the population were against these facilities, while the government was drawing up secret plans for new ones.

he immediately got slammed in the press for having done that, of course, although he publicly denounced any violence. he was done with that, he said; it didn't serve the cause and people should come clean with what they had done. for that he got confronted by some older activists who knew him from back then. there was nothing wrong about these days, there were hundreds, if not thousands of acitivists and squatters breaking the law almost daily. political protest was broad: non-violent and violent. in fact, it served the general good. the anti-apartheid struggle benefited enormously. politicians were lame and morally corrupt (not much difference now by the way, there just isn't that much protest).

in the press, however, there was absolutely no debate about how society and politics were back then, and in what kind of framework people lived and behaved. so more and more of a fuss is stirring about those days.

so what happended of course? Peter went to the drawing board and hacked out some 30 pages about his adventures of being a punk and political activist back then. fuck! I don't need that now! I'm editing two books of poetry and slowly writing my way into a new book of English prose, which already has about 30 pages also. fuck!... this one, though, is in Dutch. writing it is fairly easy, and material there is in abundance.

so I decided that this will be priority number one, until completion. it can take a little while, of course, as there are lots of topics and I need to do some research too. memory is a bit of a blur sometimes, especially the timeline. I have no idea what to do with it after finishing. I'll write it first and then let some friends, who were present too, proofread it.

i'm not playing with the poem much lately, although I have pages and pages to sort out. things were and are shifting, and seem to pick up.

just to keep you posted... :)

AWOL - NO-FLY ZONE

Squandered little earth,
tell me to
let go.
Make me shift to
a higher mode.

Where ugly faces
and ugly hearts,
are not allowed
to follow.
