Think you can be a meat-eating environmentalist? Think again!
Current mood: hopeful

Think you can be a meat-eating environmentalist?
Think again!!

POLLUTION:
The meat industry causes more water pollution in the US than all other industries combined because aniamls raised for food produce 130 times more excrement than the entire human population does - 86,000 pounds per second. A typical pig factory farm generates a quantity of raw waste equal to that of a city of 50,000 people, but without the sewage system. According to the Environmental Protection Agence (EPA), the runoff from the factory farms pollutes our rivers and lakes more than all other industrial sources combined.

LAND:
Of all agricultural land in the US, nearly 80 percent is used to raise animals for food. More than 260 million acres of US forest have been cleared to create cropland to grown grain to feed farmed animals. Twenty times more land is required to feed a meat-eater than to feed a pure vegetarian.

WATER:
Raising animals for food consumes nearly half the water used in the US. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce ONE POUND of beef, but only 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat. Also, the EPA reports that chicken, hog and cattle excrement have polluted 35,000 miles of rivers in 22 states and contaminated groundwater in 17 states.

GLOBAL WARMING:
Meat production causes global warming. The massive amount of animal feces produced in factory farms is the largest source of airborne methane in the US. According to the EPA, methane traps heat in the atmosphere more than 20 times more effectively than carbon dioxide does.

ENERGY:
Raising animals for food requires more than one-third of all the raw materials and fossil fuels used in the US. Satisfying our appetite for flesh requires fuel to produce fertilizer for the crops that are fed to animals, oil to run the trucks that take them to slaughter, electricity to freeze their carcasses and much more.

ANIMALS:
You can't be concerned about the environment without caring about our fellow inhabitants, the animals. They're made of flesh and blood, have complex social and psychological lives and feel pain, just as humans do. More than 27 billion animals are killed by the US meat industry each year and they're killed in ways that would horrify any compassionate person.

It is more effective for a person to switch from a meat-eating diet to a vegetarian diet than it is to switch from a standard car to a Prius.

There is much, much more information out there that is earth-shattering, literally. Take a minute or two to do the research. It could change your life, and probably will.

For a free vegetarian starter kit, visit www.goveg.com or call 1-888-VEG-FOOD.

... sad news ...
Current mood: sad
Category: Pets and Animals

Yesterday, July 20, 2007 my pooch, Taylor passed away. She was very sick, covered in tumors that pained her when she had to breathe and caused her to vomet every single time she ate. So my sister, her hub (where Taylor has lived) and I decided it was time to end Taylor's suffering... She died around 11:30 am west coast time. I had this dog for half of my life. She got me through my teenage years and into long relationships, from childhood into adulthood.... she was my bestest friend. Please, hold her in your heart and mind for a moment today, say a prayer, light a candle, whatever you like to do... just to send her off with as much love and warmth and light as possible.

Dog skinned alive in Arkansas - PLEASE HELP
Current mood: DISGUSTED
Category: DISGUSTED Pets and Animals

I am sick and digusted. I understand and empathize with animal lovers like myself who are upset over Missy's fate. What I do not and can not fathom is those who can just turn an ignorant eye to this tragedy. For those of you who see this as a "misdomeaner" think about this. Most people who torture animals move on to humans. Imagine it's you who is being skinned alive.... imagine what that dog went through, defenseless and innocent. I am utterly disgusted and extremely saddened by Missy's death. I am EQUALLY DISAPPOINTED in those who allow this filth of a human being to go free. Torturing animals should be a FELONY and those who do so should pay a large price as those who died did. PLEASE CROSS POST!!!!!!

You can also write the AR governor: http://www.governor.arkansas.gov/contacts.html

Dog skinned alive should be a federal offense please help

CALLING ALL AMERICANS WHO ARE, IN ANY WAY , INVOLVED IN ANIMAL RESCUE, TRANSPORT, FOSTER CARE, ANIMAL WELFARE, ANIMAL ADVOCACY, CROSS POSTING......

OR...

ARE JUST PLAIN FED UP WITH THE FACT THAT A SICK MINDED PERSON CAN SKIN A DOG ALIVE AND, IF CAUGHT, NOT HAVE TO PAY THE MOST SEVERE CONSEQUENCE!

THIS DERANGED PERSON CONTINUES TO WALK AMONG US!!!

He (they) have not yet been caught. WHY??? Shockingly, there is no formal investigation underway because this crime is in the misdomeanor category. Were it a FELONY, a formal investigation would be in progress.

People continue to feel heartsick and saddened when they hear of such a senseless act of cruelty to an animal. Are you tired of simply wringing your hands and feeling HELPLESS to do anything that could possibly make a difference? NOW IS YOUR CHANCE TO EFFECT CHANGE!

We've racked up a whole 10 comments on the Topix forum. Great comments. The article's "popularity" is listed #2 now, but can't we do more than 10 comments? Good grief, they don't have to be long or fancy. What do you say we try to get a few more today? Maybe 100. Then we can shoot for 1,000. Okay?

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW!! POST YOUR COMMENTS ON THIS FORUM!
Here's the link: http://www.topix.net/city/benton-ar/2007/06/benton-woman-finds-dog-skinned-alive

We are trying desperately to bring this heinous crime to the forefront of national attention so we can get LAWMAKERS to take this SERIOUSLY - once and for all!
We are trying to get the law changed so that such violent and cruel acts of animal torture will be A FELONY, rather than just s SPANK on the hand, which is the status quo. The law would be called MISSY'S LAW- in honor of the innocent dog who was skinned alive - and left on her owners doorstep to writhe in anguish and agony until she died. Can you imagine the excruciating pain and terror Missy suffered?

I'm not asking for anything else, simply that you go to the above link and weigh in with your thoughts, comments, outrage. Then cross post far and wide.

Please get this out, okay? If we can't this done, how are we going to get Missy's Law passed?
Will you please be a voice for Missy? Will you please take a minute to go to the forum and post your feelings? WE NEED YOUR VOICE NOW!!
We always wonder what we can do to make a difference. Well, this will help immensely!

To those of you who have taken the time to weigh in with your comments- I can't say thank you enough.

IT'S TIME TO COLLECTIVELY SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!" We are no longer going to remain SILENT!

THANK YOU ALL FOR CARING!

"I love animals, loved animals all my life," says dog owner Dee Green.
In fact, Green has a hard time turning away stray dogs that roam her Benton neighborhood. Over the years, she's collected more than eight of them. She says they come here because, "They know that they'll be loved."
But Green says it's possible someone may have retaliated because she has so many. "It's just like they skinned a deer. That's what he said, like she had been skinned like a deer. So you can imagine hanging somewhere up on a tree," explains Green. "You know I don't know how they do deer but you know I can imagine her hanging there and they're just stripping all her skin off of her."
Green had just arrived home from work last week when she heard Missy barking. She found her under the carport with her skin hanging off.
"I will never forget that as long as I live. That's something that nobody needs to go through. It's terrible," she explains.
Green rushed Missy to the Benton Veterinary Hospital and Dr. Howard Foggo. Green says she was praying it was just a dog fight, but reality set in when the doctor said Missy had been skinned alive. Dr. Foggo says, "It was basically cut from here to here all the way around and you can't just sit there with a knife without someone restraining the animal." Dr. Foggo calls it by far the worst animal cruelty case he has ever seen. He had to euthanize Missy.
"It's wasn't the pain that I am going through. It's the pain that I can feel that she went through that she doesn't deserve," says Green.
So for now, she's is busy keeping an eye on her other beloved pets, so tragedy doesn't strike again.
"Somebody like that needs to be caught and they need to be prosecuted," says Green.
The Saline County Sherriff's Department has no suspects. If you have any information you're asked to call them at 501-303-5608.
Green is offering a $1500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Current mood: hopeful
Category: Pets and Animals

Hi. My name is Rio. I am a very sweet girl who is full of love to share with a family that will love me back!! I have had a rough life so far. First I had a family that dumped me at a shelter where I was rescued an hour before euthanization. Then the folks that rescued me found me a home but that fell through unfortunately. Now I am back with them looking for my furever home. I am okay with other dogs but not cats. I could use a little training but I learn fast. I already got "sit" and "no" down!!!!!! I just want someone to love. Anyone??

a thought or two, or six or nine...
Current mood: pensive

There you are, standing at the edge of a cliff. Do you jump? Or do you turn around and go home? Isn't either choice taking a risk? Some may say no but I say yes. Every choice creates a path... a journey. To turn around and go home sets a plan in motion, just as leaping from the cliff would have. It's difficult... no, it is impossible to know what choice will get you to your destination... maybe any choice would.... it's just that some paths may be rockier than others. Do you ever ponder the choices you make? Wonder if it was right? And what does it mean to make the right choice? Right for you? Right for the universe? Right for that moment? Right for someone else? Well I guess it should be right for you... Sometimes we never know if the choice, the risk, the journey was what we wanted. How do we know what we wanted to begin with? Isn't it that we always want what we don't have? So in essence, I could take a risk and jump from the cliff's edge. But when I fall to the water, will that be what I thought it was to be? Will I long to be back up on the ledge? Or somewhere else altogether? Can we change our minds once we've reached what we thought we wanted but soon discovered was not? Can we climb back up the ledge? Well it's all new choices at that point eh? And is it possible to risk everything only to be long for what was years later? I can not decide. Do I have to? Why can't we have it all? Why is it that everything is lined up and we have to choose one? What if I want two? Or one now and one later? Alternating. I'm sure this can all be explained by spiritual masters or by Aunt Tilly from Omaha, who knows. All I know right now, right this moment is that I remember what was and long for it to be what is. Even though what is is more beautiful than what was. Why? Who's design is it? Torture... my heart aches with the anticipation. Anticipation of feeling maybe just a glimpse of before... And why do I want the glimpse? Why can't today be enough for now? Living in the past never got anyone anywhere... living for now, this minute, this second, this day did. But can you do that and still miss yesterday? Yesterday.
