I realise that we have not written an update in forever so this is us touching base with you guys and saying hello! *waves*, this is also a message for anyone waiting for their copy or copies of the latest issue.

Issue 18 has been out for 2 weeks now – the first half of the magazines were delivered and sent out a week or so ago. We really appreciate your patience and are confident that you will enjoy the magazine in all its Technicolor glory once it lands in your lap. If you have any queries about your order please contact me directly via our email at nickie@devolutionmagazine.co.uk

For those who were at Bloodstock and got their copies – we really appreciated all the positive feedback on the new colour layout and extra pages and we were also delighted to spot 6 people wearing our t shirts around the festival which was awesome!!!! If you have any photos of you in the shirts email them to us so w can add them to our reader's gallery in our pics section.

There are a million things happening right now at Devo HQ, we will soon be announcing the 2009 calendar competition winners, announcing our Xmas Party line up and details on how your band can get onto our covermount cd next issue! So stay tuned………..

Mick Mercer Reviews Issue 17 & Covermount CD Tracks
Category: Music

Mick Mercer took the time out to one again thoroughly flick through the mag and play the double covermount cd - this is what he thought of the issue and tracks..............

DEVOLUTION - ISSUE 17

This is all fine. Apparently they have a new look coming up with the next issue which will be interesting, as with a slightly clearer layout and improved reviews section (which does look rather drab, light on the live side too) and maybe even slightly richer colours Devolution will look like a posh 'proper' mag, and I think rock fans (its main forte) go for that sort of thing, yet it will retain a fresh feel, so that's all to the good. Also they have gone mad this time and there's a 2CD 30 track freebie!

This time round the rock content really dominates, with Cavalera Conspiracy, Die So Fluid, Hardcore Superstar, a cheeky chat with Julian Angel, a lively Dropkick Murphys encounter and James from Megadeth, which I would have thought constituted something of a coup? The history of Def Leppard is, um, exactly.

None of that really thrilled me, nor did I expect it to, but the offshoot pieces are interesting, especially the Absinthe (can't abide the stuff!) tasting, and a chat with Arlene Russo (of Bite Me, and her Vampire Nation book). You get model Andromeda X, frank and pessimistic photographer in Elizabeth Chiyoko, fashion spreads on Dead Threads and Boobie Trap Corsets and custom Barbie dolls from Dolls By Passion. In the Saint Or Sinner? corner you get Scarlet form Theatres Des Vampires, there's something entitled Plucking Hellfire which I couldn't fathom out at all and an interview with a hypnotherapist, but how would you know they hadn't made you print nice things, hmmm?)

Of all the mags with free CDs Devolution have the broadest range, and with 30 tracks here it's a perilous voyage for your rock-allergic Mercer.

Grave Dust's 'My Lovely Ass' is a crazed industrial pop concoction, Pistol Kixx have only skimpy rock to inflate the disappointing 'Rock N Roll Trash Queen', but From Almost The End are muscular and raging slowly through 'Battlefield' with Manichae dumpily dour in 'Surrounded.' Puredecay opt for chipper guitar and fx attack in 'Save Me', Entwined Chaos caught between a rock and hard sensitive place in 'Epic Mayhem.' Violet Vortex are a blessed relief with their twisty fun in 'Siren Song', and Filthygore is a dramatic big girl's blouse in 'Ghost Light.' Damaged Angels clown around in a cliched 'Sexual Predator', while Only weep softly through 'The Hunted' with much flossy wibbling. Dissidence are viscously bubbling in 'Let Your Children Burn' which may have a serious point to make but is so dull, taking forever to hit a lethal direction I couldn't persevere.

The Optic Nerves are perky punks and 'Vacant Stare' quite cute, then All Living Fear's 'Jessica' pops up, of all things! Weird. The Bard Stars swing their hips during 'Southampton' but you know it's not going to be great, especially when rhyming bus lanes with vomit stains and then Ivys Itch wander like a cooing, drunken giant spider in 'Snake Oil (Blues)' and that's CD 1 done and dusted.

The Shanklin Freak Show make the bumptious fun in 'Lizard Man' and the best vocals present make Dead Pleasures' 'Ghost Train' a dark croontatsic r'n'r treat with Subject To Change also smartly energetic with their withering melodic approach in 'Servility And Faith' although they could do with some subtler nuances to bring out the real quality of the song.
Thracia yowl and hammer away at 'Stuck In Silence' just as Sexy Death make some disgusting noises throughout the joyful twittering of 'A Chemical Rabbit.'

The Rollocks live out their Stonesy/Primals memories with modern themes in 'Tuesdays Papers' which you either withstand or not. Trashtown Thrillers bowl messily through 'Trash n Roll' and Electro Magnetic Workshop go on a headtrip in 'Vengeance At Port Au Prince', possibly minus actual heads. Seven Days Of Night have a nicely nagging noir flow to 'Outside' and I'd definitely like to hear more form them. Dedhed think you can pitch Nirvana different and we might not notice. So, that's 'Mad Dog' for you. Gripshift are hoary old rock bluster, so 'Dress Up The Outside' is best left alone. Life With Max cruise the pointless pop rock 'Day 1' and Sandalinas have a gruelling soft rock 'The Wrong Side Of Me', with Joe Haze's '88' so rock I went into a coma. Luckily the bucolic preacher Jack Of The Pulpit 'Pirate Song' emerges right at the end and it's like Tunnel Of Love meets Frank The Baptist, which is high recommendation indeed.

Rock fans will get more out of that and be introduced to some things possibly more novel to them, which is a decent result.

DEVOLUTION @ DOWNLOAD - WILL YOU BE REPRESENTIN US?
Current mood: strong

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL 2008 COMPETITION

As usual we will be at the awesome Download Festival this year. Its going to be messy, according to some this may not be the best line up for the event but we are personally looking forward to checking out lots of bands that we haven't seen yet and with the announcement that our friends MALEFICE are now playing the Tuborg stage it's a done deal – they are amazing live and if you're at Download you need to be heading over to see them play and show them support. As well as the festival of course comes the campsite antics and hooking up with friends from all over the country for drinks, silliness and fun fair rides.

Now………..are you a fan of Devolution? Do you already own a Devo Shirt or fancy getting yourself one? Want to show us some love at the festival? Of course you do! Here is what we want you to do……………..

Make sure that you remember to pack your Devolution shirt whether its as you bought it or is completely diy'd and then when you're at the festival……..get a photo of yourself in it – whether its just you or a group photo. Pull your best metal claws or just throw some horns – whatever you choose to do it has to be a photo of you representing the magazine by wearing your shirt.

When you get home - email us the photos and we will print them alongside our Download Festival Report. The photos will appear in colour in our august issue so remember to send us your Name or Group Name and the location of where you live. All entries can be emailed to me at nickie@devolutionmagazine.co.uk By July 01st and no later please.

We have loads of different styles of shirts in our webstore and all are priced at £10.00 each plus p+p. I will also throw in a badge pack containing 4 x badges of the t shirt character that you buy. You can choose from Metal, Punk or Goth Girl.

So head on over to our webstore at: http://www.devolutionmagazine.co.uk/store/

2009 CALENDAR COMP - RULES & INFO WITHIN >>>>
Current mood: bouncy

Hey Guys And Girls

It's that time again to get your photoshoots booked, get your outfits planned and start thinking up some inspiring and beautiful images for our 2009 calendar. Last years calendar was a huge success with 14 chosen images used. And we want 2009's to be even more creative and wonderful – so here is where you come in!

The competition is simple – you have to produce a picture that has a 'Devolution' Theme within it. Whether it's a good use of our logo, you wearing one of our items of Devolution clothing or the use of some of our awesome merchandise. Either way the image will have a Devolution theme – that is a must.

The use of our logo should be well planned and tie in with the photograph, its no good taking a beautiful photo of yourself and then sticking the logo on the corner of the picture as an entry – be creative and inventive and fit it in somewhere within the photograph.

We had a few male entries last year but we want MORE! We need to see the guys as well as the girls so I hope to see submissions from across the board.

Below are the rules of the competition – please read them carefully before you submit any images to us. If you are unclear or unsure of anything please do not hesitate to drop me a line at nickie@devolutionmagazine.co.uk

The Closing Date Is: 10th AUGUST 2008

  • You must be over 18 Years Of Age
  • The competition is open to absolutely anyone – model or not – All over the world
  • We will accept solo shots and group photos
  • The Image must be submitted WITH the Photographers permission
  • We CANNOT except any images that contain full nudity, no genitalia or nipples – keep it clean but arty people!
  • You cannot submit a photograph that has been published elsewhere
  • Choose and submit up to 3 of your Best Shots – no more than 3 images per entry
  • By Submitting a photograph you accept the terms and conditions
  • All photographs must be shot in LANDSCAPE format – not Portrait.
  • All photographs should be emailed through at high res.
  • When submitting your images please include your Name / Modelling Name, Photographer Credits, Location, Age, Email Addresses & Myspace / Website Links.
  • All Entries must be with us by AUGUST 10TH 2008 – AND NO LATER any entries sent after this date will be automatically disqualified.
  • The Judges Decision is final

We look forward to seeing your photographs and hearing about your shoot ideas!

Good Luck
