playlist from glasgow
A few people actually expressed interest in the playlist this time, so here it is. The first part was just me, and the second was me and Jane McKeown (Lung Leg, Peter Parker) alternating. So this does not include Gavin Dunbar's one hour set directly after the bands (which was good as well).

COIR 008 - new date!
Coming back from Indietracks and a, by all certainty, triumphant club night in Glasgow, here is our second night at På Besök, right on YOUR doorstep.

It should be noted that we've changed the date for this, so it's now one day sooner (on a Friday). This is to avoid a clash with the thrilling Malmö Popfest coming up on August 30th. It's at Debaser and features Derby's cutest: The Deirdres - amongst others. Lots of people will be DJing at this thing which runs from 4pm to 3am, I think, including me!
That's The Stems there on the poster of course, and I'm hoping to get fellow Australian Darren Hanlon a gig either at the club or the popfest. We might have some bands playing in autumn actually, and we'll be looking at dates for the remaining months of the year after this. I'd really like to have Twig and Cocoanut Groove down! Our guest DJ for August is Albulene, I've already got some incredible tunes on my list and she did her playlist months ago.
Also coming up is an appearance at How Does It Feel to Be Loved? in London sometime in September (about time!), and the return of Klubb K3 - now in the hands of me and another regular!
see you back in Sweden,
xx

TUESDAY’S SECRET mix
Here's a cracking new mix for August, named after a Felt song.
The Mai 68s - Lead Me to a Quiet Cell [Froth On the Daydream EP, 2008] Finally a Britsh answer to Liechtenstein and Vivian Girls! Free download track from the brilliant, Joe Foster-produced debut ep on Cloudberry. See them at Indietracks, or live to regret it.
The Great Scots - That's My Girl (Rotten to the Core) [45 a-side, 1966] The greatest beat/garage group out of Canada alongside The Haunted! Dressing in kilts on stage is a bit silly, but who cares when they give us 12-string jangle like this. Sundazed released The Great Lost Great Scots Album!!! in 1997 and three years later Beat Rocket gave us another set of recordings called Arrive!, on which you'll find this single.
The Sherrys - Put Your Arms Around Me [1966 a-side] A legendary nothern soul cut, if only because it kicked off the first Wigan Casino allnighter in 1973. One comp you can get it on is the 2-disc Northern Soul Originals on Hallmark.
The Innocence - All I Ask [s/t LP, 1967] This group evolved out of songwriting duo The Tradewinds and were picked up by The Lovin' Spoonful's label Kama Sutra. They were probably trying to capitalise on the success of the Spoonful with with more psych-pop. But the record was a failure, the group split and it's now a sunshine pop collectable.
The Liverbirds - Shop Around [1964 a-side] These northeners are a perfect 'girls in the garage' band, as they dressed like men and refused to sing like girls were meant to sing. Much like The Beatles they went to Hamburg and made a name for themselves in Germany. They did two albums for Star Club and this was their first single, an infectious take on the 'now' rhyme.
1000 Violins - Beautiful Shirt [Please Don't Sandblast My House mini-LP, 1986] This Sheffield outfit is (or god knows should be) notorious for their mess of releases with different b-sides everywhere. Vinyl Japan's effort to do a singles compilation only got halfway. The singles are all different versions from the album cuts (because they got a new singer), the Dreamworld singles have different b-sides on the 7" and 12" versions. And then there's this German mini-LP on Constrictor with more exclusive tracks! "Beautiful Shirt" is a great example of their jangling guitars and busy bass lines. It's also on a compilation called Let's Find Another Ideal Guest House, by the way.

COIR 007 in Glasgow with BANDS!
We're very happy that we are once again able to present some live music, it's a lot easier done in Glasgow. As I'm there half of August I thought I might as well put something on. So, on the 15th you have this to put in your calendars:

Presented together with Back Tae Mine, we have The Just Joans and The Catalysts playing for free at 9 pm! Two bands from Glasgow and both with recent ep releases. Just Joans are playing at Indietracks and I think this is their first gig after that. The Catalysts', or Ulric Kennedy's, performances are much more rare. Originally formed in 1985 with fellow ex-Mixer Dannie Vallely and reformed in the 90s, they have released three eps full of Byrdsy jangle.
After 11 pm it'll cost you a fiver to get in but there's still things to look forward to. As usual Gavin from Camera Obscura will be playing records, taking turns with me and our secret guest! And it goes on until 3 am. La Notte by Antonioni will be screened in the background and there'll be minifanzines for the early guests!
See you at The Flying Duck. xx

Playlist from COIR 006
I and Rebecka turned a brilliant set last night, if I may say so. Peppered with powerpop and northern soul, but the double appearance of Jackie Wilson was accidental. The exact opposite will have to said about playing Swedish garage-revival thugs Crimson Shadows after The Field Mice, though. We're probably the only club ever to have done that! Rebecka got the honour of concluding with some spiteful Felt jangle. Apologies if we were too loud - we were behind the speakers! Next time we won't have the mixer behind the bar.

POSITIVE BOMB - songs for july!
The Wave Pictures - We Come Alive [Instant Coffee Baby LP, 2008] I hadn't really listened to The Wave Pictures before this month, something I can only regret. Their new album out on Moshi Moshi is utterly brilliant and will be a milestone for any fan of Hefner, Subway Sect or Modern Lovers. They are playing Indietracks next month and I'll be there to join with lines like "the air in here is dead, but we're not finished yet".
The Sunshine Company - Rain [Happy Is the Sunshine Company LP, 1967] Perhaps the epitome of sunshine pop, here is the Co. with a song about... rain, of all things. It's one of their most beautiful compositions and is to be found on the first of their three lps.
The Stone Cutters - Fellow Slave [a-side, 1966] Another rare garage cut, from a single on the Shurfine label. Don't know anything about the group beyond the fact that they were based in Atlanta. You'll find both sides of the single on Gyro Records' Can't Tame Me compilation.
The Carrots - Beverly [Demo EP, 2006] A modern-day girlgroup from Austin, Texas. They're signed to Elefant and the label's next two releases after the ep from The School were both Carrots 7"s! Together they hold eight gorgeous tunes, but actually I prefer the old recordings of some of the songs, that they made available as a download ep two years ago.
The Holidays - I Lost You [b-side, 1968] This was a soul super-group comprising Steve Mancha, Eddie Anderson, JJ Barnes and Edwin Starr. The latter does not appear on this recording however, released on Groove City in 1968. The group actually got together in 1966 and this was sort of a reunion if I've understood it correctly. You can find it on Goldmine's Totally Solid Hitbound collection of Detriot northern soul hits.
How Many Beans Make Five - Courting Disaster [s/t LP, 1989] I'd only heard a few songs by this little-known UK pop group until recently. One was the classic "Another Friendly Face" on a split-flexi with The Popguns. That was released by La-Di-Da Productions and their collected recordings for the label were later made available as the One Last Look cd. Full of no-frills POP and brilliant guitar sounds, this is as good as indiepop gets! A bit hard to find, unfortunately.

COIR 006 details
We're back!

This is the first night at a new venue, so I hope you will all help to 'fill up the room'! On the decks this time we have Rebecka who's coming down from Stockholm. Surprisingly knowledgeble about indiepop at only 17, she writes at Feral Pop Frenzy together with a friend (in Swedish, I should add). On the wall, Beat Girl will be flickering, if someone will lend us a projector. Another reason to come down is St. Peters Cream Stout, one of several exclusive beers served at the venue!
The POP continues at Retro from 1 am to 3 am, at the summer edition of So Tough! So Cute!
The Magnetic Fields are playing in Copenhagen the Tuesday after, so maybe we'll play a Merritt composition...

CUTE BOY DISCOUNT - new songs on player!
A slight revamp of the profile here, to support our second change of venue. Let's hope it lasts this time! And here are the songs to go with it:
Vivian Girls - Never See Me Again [demo, 2007] The best new American band this year must surely be Vivian Girls, named after Henry Darger's fictional hermaphrodites. Part of the ever-growing noise/punk scene in the US, these three girls actually have some pop influences as well (The Shangri-Las, Black Tambourine...). First single came on Playing With Dolls earlier this year and their self-titled debut is out NOW on Mauled By Tigers, with another 7" to follow soon. I haven't had a chance to pick up the LP yet, so here's a track from their demo cd from last year.
The Fun and Games - Don't Worry Baby [Elephant Candy LP, 1969] Finally I've listened to the only album buy sunshine pop legends Fun & Games. Actually, most legendary because Gary Zekeley produced it after having worked with Jan & Dean and The Yellow Balloon. It got reissued by Rev-Ola in 2005 and is every bit as good as word has it. Slightly more psych that your usual sunshine fare, but this track goes straight for the harmony and atmosphere of the Beach Boys.
The Hotrods - I Don't Love Her No More [Joe Meek Freabeat compilation, 2008] Sanctuary released this comp earlier this year and it includes lots of great obscurities beyond more well-known tracks from eg The Buzz and The Syndicats. Not all freakbeat, strictly speaking, such as this stomper with an almost northern soul beat. Can't find any info on the band!
All My Friends - Up and Down the River [Up and Down the River EP, 2008] Second self-release from this Glasgow band (now a full band - again!), this time an ep. This is even more of a classic than last year's album! Should be available from iTunes shortly. Garry has gotten married, and quit Butcher Boy leaving Alison as their only shared member. I'm hoping for a Cloudberry release this year!
The Chantelles - Gonna Give Him Some Love [45 b-side, 1965] This outfit evolved out of Dusty Springfield's first group The Lana Sisters. They released several singles and this is from their third. Most of them can be found on the Dream Babes set. Read more about them here: http://www.spectropop.com/gg/chantelles.html
The Catalysts - Autumn Everywhere [Autumn Everywhere EP, 2008] Apart from a contribution to The Beautiful Music's TVPs tributes, this is the first new material from Glaswegian Ulric Kennedy's The Catalysts since the Long Distance EP from two years ago. Like his beautiful version of "Where the Rainbow Ends" (on the bonus disc to volume two) the new ep shows off a new, super-jangly side. They really don't make 'em like this anymore, so have a listen even though the summer's long from over yet. Out on Cloudberry on June 1st.

A HANDLE ON THE PAST - new mix up!
The club is taking a spring break while looking for new venues. To entertain you in the meantime - here are six new songs to listen to!
The Wolfhounds - Cut the Cake [Cut the Cake EP, 1985] The first furious release from Dave Callahan's band and on the legendary Pink label. They released several great albums before Callahan reinvented himself as Moonshake. I saw the Wolfhounds perform this two years ago at the ICA and it was as deafening as the live recording I've heard from 1986 at the same venue.
The Insane - Someone Like You [45 b-side, 1967] More rare garage from Gyro Records. This is the maddest take on the Byrds riff I've heard - sounds like their trying to pound that drumkit through the floor! The band was from Terryville, CT and the single released on a label called Allen Association.
The Pooh Sticks - 1-2-3 Red Light [Alan McGee EP, 1988] Hue's classic cover of the bubblegum staple from 1910 Fruitgum Company. This is possibly even better than the original. It's just such an ingenious melody!
The Pussywillows - Turn Her Down [Spring Fever! 12", 1988] April March's (or Eleanor Blake) first band. This is from their only release ever, that I hope I'll find one day. It consists of covers of varying obscurity, this one originally by The Cupons (as found on Girls In the Garage). Before launching a solo career, April was in The Shitbirds and later also made a record with The Makers.
The Cyrkle - Weight of Your Words [Neon LP, 1967] It'll soon be a year since Tom Dawes died, most famous for being one half of the songwriting duo in The Cyrkle - an American bubblegum/sunshine/psych group. Neon was their second album
The Velvet Satins - Nothing Can Compare to You [45 a-side, 1965] It doesn't get more northern soul than this! Still one of the best, and you'll find it on The Essential Northern Soul Story (compiled by Kev Roberts, and released by Goldmine Soul) amongst others.
