Lies, all lies!
Category: Music

'One week', she said. All Smack III mixes uploaded within one week. That's what she said. About a month ago.

Yeah, sorry about that – they really are most definitely on their way still, but its been all Work, and Stuff and Things, and please-miss-the-dog-ate-my-homework, can I be excused from podcasting this week?

Merf's Wonky Disco mix is incoming, it needed a bit where we had needle-skip problems cutting out but now is all spruced up and ready to go.

So, while you - and he - are waiting (about another month probably!) for me to upload that bastard, please have a listen to this Avalanches gem he pointed me at yesterday. Seems its been knocking around since 05, but its worth a second airing even if you heard it first time round.

Cracking, cracking stuff. Full of clever and funny bits to boot.
2ManyDJs fans should definitely try it on for size.
But then, so should every fooker else…

Keep revisting, as both Merf's and Brother's sets, plus the later Merf vs Forward-Thinking Tam ghettotech fiasco (it was massive amounts of fun ladeez and gents, but did get us into a bit of trouble with the management..), will be going up soon, along with plenty of embarassing photos from the night...

Smack III this Friday - and new Merfmix!
Current mood: animated

HEAR YE, HEAR YE!

For your Audio Pleasure, we shall be installing ourselves in North London's Westbury Bar this Friday [February the 8th] from 9pm til an ungodly 3 in the morning. Joining us once again to add a stout helping of electroclash and jackin house to our usual volley of random disco, breakbeat and booty-bass filth, will be the immaculately-coiffeured Superstar PJ and Brother.

We're quite chuffed about this, as The Westbury has seen the likes of Duke Dumont, Hot Chip and Plump DJs at the decks. It's so exciting in fact, that I'm even willing to give you a sneak preview of their posh wallpaper:

Swanky!
And as if that by itself wasn't enough, they also have pool tables aplenty, and an extensive cocktail menu (technicolour yawn, anyone?)
Oh, and the bar-staff are hot. They were last time I was there anyway..

Artist Rexbox will also be lurking around the bar - he's been busy lately with the superb Orange Unlimited website, and the premiere of his MTV series Gripwrench, as well continuing his contribution to the awesome Little Big Planet over at Media molecule.

At any rate, you should certainly keep an eye out for the fella, as he's bringing his pens and at your request he will tattoo you.
(I've been trying to persuade him to bring a bottle of Quink and some sharpened bamboo for a more 'permanent' look, but he hasn't taken the bait yet. There's still time though…)

Anyway, here he is – if you spot him, expose bits of yourself and cry out for RexArt!

So, not to press the point or anything, but..

SMACKIII

THIS FRIDAY.

The Westbury
(nearest tube: Kilburn Park, Bakerloo Line)
34 Kilburn High Road
London
NW6 5UA

SET TIMES:

9.00 – 9.45pm – MERF: wonky disco wind-up
9.45 – 11.15pm – BROTHER: electroclash /pop
11.15 – 12.00am – FORWARD-THINKING TAM: electro /house
12.00 – 1.30am – SUPERSTAR PJ: Jackin/Fidget house
1.30 -2.30am – MERF vs FORWARD-THINKING TAM: Dirty Music
2.30 -3.00am – Soundclash.

And I'm going to be posting round some new mixes from the Smack lot in the next couple days in order to whet your appetites, so subscribe to blog if you fancy getting a nudge about them…

Let's kick off with this new one from Merf - he'll be playing this sort of stuff during the 1.30- 2.20am slot – so expect things to get fast and sweary!
(I should probably also add that its his birthday, so he might cry into his beard if you don't turn up.)

WRITING ABOUT MUSIC IS LIKE DANCING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE, yeah..?
Current mood: anxious
Category: Podcast

Gawd knows who's quote that is (Laurie Andersons/Elvis Costellos/Frank Zappas depending on where you look) but anyway, Merf was expressing some agreement with this sentiment the other day so I'd best keep it short with the new mix blurb unless I want disowning.

Basically, 'Disco Ball's younger, more thoughtful & milder mannered brother starts off moderately well-behaved but suddenly derails during his late teens, jumping up and down in the street, swearing, and gyrating his hips suggestively at passers-by. Cut to ten years later when it's all falling to pieces and some paparazzi burst in on him in the G.A.Y. toilets sporting unreasonably wide flares, a pimp tasche, and jiggling a 7-foot transvestite up and down and his knee, whilst snorting mountains of coke off his own tits – after which he retreats to rehab for several months to Think About What He Has Done. Big bruvver Disco Ball feels proud. Everyone else is roundly horrified.

The End.

Er, yeah, anyway – here he is:

(.. and sorry about the distortion on the Rare Lowry track – you can hear it in a less-ear-wrenching and even more awesome capacity on Merf's latest, The Smack Windup )

Artificial Selection
Current mood: peaceful
Category: Podcast

So this week's mix is relatively gentle and - in places ...oooo.. some might even use that annoying word 'quirky'. But don't panic, it still goes a bit 'souless electro' towards the end.

Merf vs Forward-Thinking Tam - Artificial Selection

PLAYLIST:

Ellen Allien – trashscapes (Raz Ohara remix) [Bpitch Control germany]
- - -
E.R.P. – vox automaton [frustrated funk]
Beanfield – tides (Carl Craigs movement 1 mix) [Compost Records]
The Emperor Machine – yes no egg [DC recordings]
- - -
Architecture in Helsinki – do the whirlwind (Hot Chip rmx) [moshi moshi]
Simon Bookish - Terry Riley's disco [Playlouderecordings]
Etienne De Crecy – fuck [XL]
- - -
Ilija Rudman- After Midnight (L.S.B. Remix) [Love is War]
Erik & Fiedel – Donna [MMM]
Paperclip people - Jerry Lewis [planet E]
- - -
Anthony Rother – adam n eve [Datapunk Germany]
Dada Life – vote yes [Prestel]
- - -

Now, the usual RANDOM RECOMENDATIONS:

Erik & Fiedel – Donna [MMM]

Its just unreasonably cool, as you will notice when you listen to the mix - ADDTOCART!

Dempsey - ODP on the run (Tomas Almgren's Kobra mix).

Before the rather abrupt disappearance of The Switch Chart (and after what he was saying the other week, i'm laying bets that poor ol' Johnny Holloway's body will be 'mysteriously' found floating down the thames next to the BBC headquarters sometime soon!) we were left with the sage advice to go check out some Lopazz tracks. Which i duly did and was suitably delighted with 2 Fast 4 U [original] (it's just cute!) and Fuck Me! (it's just rude!).
En route though, this ear-pleasing Dempsey remix cropped up complete with vocoder action and a surprise cuss-word - excellent!

Beanfield - close to you (feat Ernesto - Maurice Fulton remix) [Compost Germany]

It's all a bit incestuous, really, this music business. No sooner had i found myself getting all dewy-eyed over Merf's Carl Craig remix of 'Tides' (3rd track into the mix, its bee-yoo-ti-ful!) than a completely unrelated indie search turned up some Maurice Fulton stuff via !!! and unexpectedly brought me right back round to Beanfield again.

Anyway, the good thing about this is the way it starts off fairly innocuous - if slightly dark - then periodically dissolves into these guitars and strings and finally vocals that are sweet as..

Definitely one to lay in bed on a sunday morning hugging your girlfriend to.
Or your boyfriend.
Or failing that, your housemate.
Or your dog.
Or your goldfish.

Actually, maybe don't hug your goldfish.

Peabody/Sherman/Steve Fisk - Wow! (Steve Fisk Ballard Throwdown - P&S re-edit) [Super Bro US]

Hysterical Man yells about something over funky old-skool beats.
What's not to like, you crazy fool?

Meat Katie/D Ramirez - stop the revolution" (Bassbin Twins remix) [Lot 49]

Ooooh, yes!

Btw, if you've not visited his solo mix page of late, you should swing by and catch Merf's latest offering:

'Slo-Mo Space Wave' includes tracks from Talking Heads, the dubiously named 'Skatt Brothers' and My Bloody Valentine - so props to him and his obscure indie tendancies!

And finally, fellow compulsive vinyl-strokers, a parting word of warning: it's difficult to mix with bloody stumps for hands.

Four New Mixes, no less...
Current mood: busy
Category: Podcast

Yeah, mixes, right!? You wait forever in the rain, then *four* of the bastards come along at once!

Errr, or am I talking about buses?

Well, either way – following a rather long absence in which holidays have been taken, records bought, masks made between buying records, then records played wearing masks (yes, its all rather random as usual) - there's finally been some Dining Room action.

Last month marked one year since i inherited PJ's decks, and if that isn't an excuse to spend some money on an 'anniversary present to self' then I don't know what is .. so finally purchased my own mp3 jiggerypokery in the form of Serato Scratch.

(An aside for anyone looking into that sort of software – its not that I had any particular scratching requirements or anything, but a bit of casting around for info revealed it to be the most stable by some way and - since cheap-n-cheerful Torq regularly seems to take objection to my mp3s and bomb out, and I don't particularly want Traktor Scratch bells n whistles - it seemed the safest option. Apparently the customer service is top notch as well, which is useful for the less I.T.-enabled among us!)

The upshot of this of course is that Kid-In-A-Sweetshop-with-50-Quid Effect – ie: a sort of audio vomitfest where loads of good tracks that have been burning a hole in my hard-drive for years have all splurged their way out at once, resulting in the longest solo mix yet.

So you can expect to work your way from a perky start into a darker section, up though some very choonful, laid back stuff and into a full-on funky house attack near the end! (Oh, and then some geezers talking in French, who I'm quite sure might be saying something rude about your mother at one point, but lets not go into that…)

Here's some Mix Pickins:

S1NGULARITY – RETURN OF THE SAVAGE BEAN.

It's pretty special being able to pluck stuff right off myspace and play it now.
If 'Savage Bean' tickled your fancy, you should definitely pay this fella's page a visit and have a listen to 'A Date With the Night' – it is spanking!

He's been here on MySpazzle all of about twenty seconds, so get in there early and show some lurve!

ORBITAL – YOU LOT

Does that still sound fan-fookin'-tastic, or what?

THE SOFT PINK TRUTH – REAL SHOCKS

We all heart Drew Daniel (no, not the Big Brother one..)!

But with no apparent snifter of a new album on the horizon (he's been busy finishing his dissertation apparently!) we'll have to tide ourselves over with this slightly spooky, vomity, urine-drinking craziness from his website

And have a listen to his re-jig of Subtle's 'Mercury Craze' (officially Most Confusing Song To Mix Ever!)

(On a side-note, while you're at it, also take a peek at this Subtle vid if you've not seen it – great stuff.)

THOSE GUYS – I WALK ALONE [HAJI & EMANUEL DUB]

One to restore your faith in 'bangin' funky house tracks, this one's been burning a hole in my record bag since Smack1, where everybody seemed to want to know what it was.

Its not surprising really – it really manages to keep building up a treat without the usual vocal overkill you tend to associate with this sort of track. It's erm.. punchy, but oooh-soooo dreeeeamy! [insert wet, girly expression]

Altogether now:

"Yaaaaaa-haaaaa,

Yaaaaaa-haaaaa,

Yaaaaa-haaaaaa-aaaaaa-aaaaaaa…"

(Hopefully the overpowering urge to move your feet might distract you from the fact that there's obviously a MASSIVE piece of dirt on the record during the main breakdown – oops!)

REX THE DOG – CIRCULATE

The word that wants to force its way out of my gob when I listen to this is 'sublime' but, since that makes me sound like a right tit, I'll avoid saying it (except I just did, doh.)

Can you think of any other tracks that manage to be sort of kickin' (as the kids say) and mournful at the same time?

And look – there's still some left in stock for some truly *insane* reason – ADDTOCART!!

(yet another great B-side to be had on this one too)

Anyhooo, enough rambling, here be the mix:

Get some moosic for your ears!

Forward-Thinking Tam's Friendly Trainwreck!

And once you;ve finished with that, you'll be pleased to know that Superstar PJ has been getting his hands dirty on Ableton... with sexy results:
..">

Herve -> Brodinski -> Chemical Brothers

And finally, after all that rather rousing stuff, you might like to check out some slightly less frantic offerings from Merf's archives, starting with this Takeover Sound mix (including, o'course, his and Agent Foot's peerless 'Together in the Dark')...

...and winding down with...

Rhythm & Sound -> Carl Craig -> Paperclip People

And finally -since folk keep pestering us about it - we are on the case with some mo' live dates and will keep you posted.

Phew! Thats about it, i think.

Hugs, keeeses, and dj kicks,
~Tam

Take yer Facebook Group, and ’Lickit’!
Current mood: busy
Category: Music

Yes, as you might have guested from the heading, we now have a fledgling Facebook Group - 'Dining Room DJs', so come and get yourself membered up (arf) right away!

There'll be the usual mix notifications - but also some other goodies not to be found on the podcast, kicking off with Brother's SmackII mix this week.. keep an eye out, cos its first come, first served...

And more importantly, we're on the lookout for everyone and anyones own mixes, tracks, podcasts, events and recommendations - so if you've got something musical you want to pimp, or just bang on about a bit ...

JOIN US!

- - -

Now to this week's mix:

Suppose i could have split this one into two separate bits really, but then i thought 'to hell with all this short mix' nonsense, and left the two halves sort of flimsily attached down the middle like a Kit-Kat.

And like a Kit Kat, its a tasty 'un, with that Wee DJs track (.. if you don't believe 'Fame' could ever sound eerie..), a hat-trick of DJ Funk and the equally awesome 'Final Level' and 'Happy Birthday Mr President' complementing eachother really quite nicely as well, thankyou.

There are some ..er.. less tasty bits as well - for instance, you won't catch me swanning over to Mr De Crecy's MySpazzle page anytime soon to boast about that *wonderful* bit of mixing i did out of 'Bass Programmer' (eurgh! at least redeemed myself a bit with the ed chamberlain stuff later tho) .. oh...and also you might want to watch out for the unexpected nut right at the end of the second finger... a finisher that may well manage to fill you with amusement and ABJECT TERROR simultaneously....

Dive in:
