AN OLD REVIEW OF THE BLEEDING
Category: Writing and Poetry
Appeared in Whispers of Wickedness some time ago. Garry Charles (author of Heaven's Falling: Ascension & Heaven's Falling: Redemption) reviews my first book, a poorly printed chapbook now out of print and hard to find, I don't even have a copy.
THE BLEEDING
By Dustin LaValley
Reviewed by Garry Charles
Upon opening the envelope that contained THE BLEEDING I was left feeling a little disheartened for two reasons:-
1) The print quality of what should have been a stunning front cover was quite poor and did the excellent artwork no justice.
2) The package felt small in my huge, grubby paws.
Having now read THE BLEEDING I am reminded of two old sayings:-
1) Never judge a book by its cover.
2) Good things come in small packages.
THE BLEEDING is a collection of 12 short stories. I usually have a problem with very short stories – which a few of these are – I get annoyed that the story is lacking, that I want more and wishing for a grander portrayal. This is not the case with Dustin's work. The author chooses his words with care and manipulates the low word count into doing exactly want he wants. No matter how short the tale he manages to give it a beginning, a middle and an end that is not only satisfying, but often left me dumbstruck with horror, nodding in agreement or laughing in amusement.
As is my usual way with collections I have listed them below for your perusal.
An Usher of Self-Eradication
Less than a page long the opening of THE BLEEDING has a poetic feel. It unnerves and leaves the reader unsure of what lurks ahead.
An Unborn Dilemma
What's in the bag? The image of brain matter plastered on the wall still haunts me.
Baby Crane Adoption Agency
Funny, yet horrific without being graphic and tinged with a hint of absurdist style. I loved this one (does that make me a bad person?).
All But One and the Same
If Carlsberg wrote zombie stories this would be it!!! An original slant on a well worn genre.
Jumper
The weakest tale in the collection, but by no means a bad one. It just lacks something I can't put my finger on.
Antidote for Chronic Neurological Distress
A sad tale of pain, suffering and the need to die. A personal look at suicide with a touching end. A pleasure to read.
The Bologna Jesus Phenomenon
F**king hilarious. The obvious explanation for all those 'I saw Jesus in my rice crispies' stories.
She Waits in the Moonlight
A spine tingling tale brimming with a sense of dread that permeates every word. Read in a minute, but lives on in memory.
Daddy J's Girl
The best reason ever to steer clear of chat rooms and using the internet for sexual kicks.
Sometimes
We started out with a poetic piece and that's how the chapbook ends.
Overall an excellent little taste of nastiness. The only complaint I have is that Naked Snake Press should consider using glossy paper for the cover and use a better printer. The art work for THE BLEEDING cover is superb and let down by this lack of quality.
Apart from that if you have a few pounds spare visit Project Pulp and see what you think.
Thank you and good night.
The Bleeding by Dustin LaValley. Pb, 40pp, $5 exP&P. Published by Naked Snake Press.

YN3: PAJAMA PARTY MASSACRE REVIEW

DVD Review: PAJAMA PARTY MASSACRE
June 16, 2008 by Mario Dominick
YOU'RE NEXT 3: PAJAMA PARTY MASSACRE (2007 dir Jason Stephenson) NFTS Productions DVD From Not For The Squeamish Productions, the indie filmmakers and horror buffs from Minnesota who gave us OFF THE BEATEN PATH (2004) and DOOMED TO CONSUME (2006), comes a short slasher spoof aimed at showing how NFTS has progressed with its efforts from short films to feature length projects. A masked psycho (Joe Knetter) takes a shower, goes into a garage and puts together a nasty-looking homemade axe (it's a buzz saw blade attached to a standard axe handle). A couple of ice cream eating babes (Scarlet Salem and Elske McCain) having a slumber party end up being first on the killer's list of victims. I think you all know how this plays out. The girls goof around, take baths, snort cocaine, bicker, etc. and eventually the night ends in a bloodbath. YOU'RE NEXT 3: PAJAMA PARTY MASSACRE turns out to be a wonderfully cheesy and fun 25-minute slasher tribute. It delivers in humor, blood, guts, and T&A and Joe Knetter as the killer wears an incredibly cheesy mask. The circular saw ax used in the film was a very creative invention and choice of weapon for a slasher and it's very evident throughout the film that NFTS are truly loyal '80s slasher fans. Overall it was a nice look at how NFTS has progressed over the years and I look forward to seeing it made into a feature length picture. NFTS's DVD of YOU'RE NEXT 3 contains numerous extras to keep you busy including two audio commentaries: one with director Jason Stephenson and the other with Joe Knetter and Scarlet Salem, behind-the-scenes footage, outtakes, interviews with Stephenson, Knetter, Salem, and producer Jon Warner, the original YOU'RE NEXT 1 and 2 short films from Stephenson and Co., and a funny featurette called "Balls, Boobs, and Blood" which provides behind-the-scenes looks at the filming of Knetter's scene where he gets kicked in the nads, the scene where the girls smear ice cream on their boobs, and the scene where blood is splattered all over the room as the killer hacks up one of his victims. Also included is an extensive stills gallery featuring production photos and promotional art, footage of cast and crew Q&A sessions at the movie's premieres at the Crypticon Horror Convention and the UWRF Horror Fest, and trailers for YOU'RE NEXT 3 and other NFTS flicks. If you're a fan of indie horror and you have $20 to spare, you can't go wrong with this jam-packed release of YOU'RE NEXT 3 from NFTS. Be sure to check out OFF THE BEATEN PATH and DOOMED TO CONSUME if you haven't already, both excellent micro budget efforts. Visit NFTS at www.nftsproductions.com

WRITING UPDATES & HFW MARCH DC- 4/3/08
Category: Writing and Poetry
Looks like a few more books will be coming out in the not too distant future. Not going to give much away, but I’m currently at work on some illustrated books (I’m the writing of course) with my buddies and you can count on them being included as greats of American Literature, being read on many college Literary programs after our deaths. No, no they won’t. Good, entertaining fun for fans of offbeat horror . . . with pretty pictures for you illiterate shits out there, yeah, I’m looking at all you morons who complain about subtitles on movies. It’s on the same damn screen! Stupid, just so so stupid. But hey, keep checking back for more information on these projects and others coming soon.
I might as well mention that my collection from RDSP, Lowlife Underdogs, is going to be available in October, released at Zombiefest in Pittsburgh.
Horrorfind Weekend, March in DC was amazing as usual. Good friends, new friends, nice people with good taste in movies, music and books. If you didn’t go, get to the August HFW! RDSP is blowing up and will, like always, be the booth to be at, the people to hang with and the toughest fuckers there. (Seriously.) Anyway, good times shared with good friends. Late night 7/11 runs, porn stars, beautiful women not uptight and stupid, and of course once again, good times with good friends.

3 NEW BOOKS FOR 2008
Category: Writing and Poetry
LOWLIFE UNDERDOGS release date - 2008 publisher - Raw Dog Screaming Press http://www.rawdogscreaming.com/lowlife.html
LaValley’s collection of stories drags us under to face the lows of society—the helpless and the morally corrupt. Snippets of our own lives can be found between the moments of brutality, a reminder of our younger years when we were bullied apathetically, almost as an afterthought, by bosses, teachers, and others. Recalling silly, failed romances and hours wasted in style with friends who had nothing to lose or gain. And in those brief moments of recognition the lowlifes become underdogs who, though seriously misguided, never stop fighting.

"I'll be honest, 'A furious force of chocolate and raspberry jam colored speckles accompanied by tender, blood-coated anus tissue…' kind of made me throw up in my mouth a little . . ."
"In all, it's a must-have for anyone that is a fan of dark humor, weird books, or just twisted childhood-type things."

The book is a collaboration between 4 very twisted minds. How did the idea behind A Child's Guide to Death come about? I was working at a movie store with good friend Mark Sullivan. Sunday's were mostly slow and together (as the only employees with multitasking skills) we would finish the day's basic labor within the first hour on the clock. One day I came into work with an idea of a child's picture book that taught the ABCs. We both remembered those boring alphabet books and decided to make learning fun for troubled children like we had been. A few hours later we had a few letters noted and some sketches on a yellow note pad. Mark still has that piece of paper somewhere, it's very interesting. We should dig that out . . .
Do you enjoy the collaborative process? How is it different from working on your own? I love collaborating. My first collaboration was with Robbie Ribspreader on the screenplay for Rise of the Ghosts. It's interesting to work with other creative minds and what they have to bring to the topic. Luckily I got John Edward Lawson involved and every time we would exchange emails I'd have to contain my laughter to get any work done. Writing is a lonely process; alone at the computer, maybe some North Side Kings or CIV playing in the background, besides that it's rather mundane. When another writer is brought in to help out, it's always exciting to see what they have for you.
What was the reaction to the book's debut at Zombiefest? Word of mouth got around quick. There were people coming up and buying the book because someone had shown them a copy. One woman bought three copies at once, explaining that two were 'Christmas presents.' People were recognizing Darin's black, red and white cover art. Each book opened brought out the demented inner-child in everyone, laughter was abundant at the RDSP booth.
As a martial artist and an author you seem to take both the body and the mind to extremes. What drives you in these areas? Both are ways of life. They're forms of self-preservation, mental and physical growth, and outlets for anger, frustration, sadness - anything that can't be held in. Through writing and training in the martial arts, I'm training my body and mind beyond the norm of society.
Do the two disciplines overlap and feed into each other or are they totally separate for you. What can't be said with a punch can be said with the nastiest of words, and vice-versa. There have been a few instances where I've been performing a kata or meditating and have been hit with a sudden urge to get up and jot down some notes. There are hints at my training in some of my writing. A reader with common knowledge may be able to pick it up and say, "Hey, that's a textbook instruction for bassai-dai bunkai." Both writing and martial arts demand a high amount of self-discipline and respect. | ..>..>
