Tom Cruise wakes up Sleeper!

So, I guess I don't have to sit on this anymore.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i8e4bba223e1c5e9a17ff9d214268886d

Just FYI - They got some details wrong, Sleeper is not a spin-off of anything, but it does have a few characters from the WS universe, including two from Wildcats and Gen 13. But Sleeper was not a spin-off property. It was seeded in Point Blank, which starred the entire WS U, but Sleeper was already greenlit by then, and Point Blank was actually altered at the script stage so as to seed Sleeper.

New Criminal arc begins in issue 4 this week!

The new issue of Criminal, 4, comes out tomorrow, and is the beginning of BAD NIGHT, which just might be the best thing we've done in Criminal so far.  It feels like it right now, at least.  Definitely the weirdest.

Anyway, I've been hearing some reports of stores selling out the first day, so keep an eye peeled tomorrow, and if your store doesn't have it, ask them to reorder you one.  It's the beginning of a four-part story, so you don't want to miss it.

Me and Duane S. on crime fiction

http://centralcrimezone.blogspot.com/2008/03/ed-brubaker-interview-by-duane.html

I didn't realize this was online. This is a really informative interview back and forth with me and one of my favorite writers, Duane Swierczynski.

Criminal 4 and Liberty Comics

The CBLDF benefit book, Liberty Comics, featuring a Criminal short story, as well as a bunch of other stuff (you can read about the book here: http://www.cbldf.org/articles/archives/000356.shtml ) goes on sale next week. I've been told quantities at San Diego Comicon will be limited, so you should be sure to get it early.

Just locked the print-run on issue 4 of Criminal (out in a few weeks) and I've just noticed something.  Our numbers for issues 2, 3 and 4 have been almost exactly the same.  Actually, that's not totally true, our numbers for issue 3 and 4 are higher than our numbers for issue 2.  And we've been selling a fair amount of reorders, too.  I won't get into the actual numbers, other than to say they're significantly higher than the ones you see reported online.

In an industry where my favorite books seem to slide a bit every month, Criminal seems to be defying the odds and being incredibly stable.   And that's good news, and makes me smile on a day when I have way too much work to do.  So, if you're buying the book in singles, thanks, and keep it up, and if you're a retailer supporting the book, thanks thanks thanks, you guys rock.

Dark Knight and Watchmen

No spoilers -- I got to see Dark Knight the other day at the local critics screening at the Imax, and it is indeed the shit.  Not that I had any doubts, but this one kicks the crap out of Batman Begins in every single way possible.  Easily as good as Spiderman 2 or Iron Man for getting it right.

And in addition to that, they showed the Watchmen trailer. I shit my pants.  My jaw dropped to the floor.  It's going to be amazing if it's half as good as the trailer, and from what I hear, the script was really great.  It looked perfect, down to the last detail, down to Rorschach's voice, all gravelly.

I can't wait to see this movie.

On another note - Not a big fan of Imax. That was my first time, and I just felt like I was getting vertigo all the time.

New Criminal book this week!

The third Criminal trade comes out this week! Be sure to get your copy and if you don't see it at your local store, please ask for it.  This one is our nicest package yet, I think, we went all out.

And please spread the word about the book elsewhere, too.

My auction item for Gene Colan

As many of you probably know, Gene Colan is struggling with some serious health issues, and the medical bills that come with that (because as we know, our health industry is broken like never before) so a lot of people have donated things to help raise money for the Colans.

You can read about my donation here: http://www.newsarama.com/comics/080704-CapNotebook.html

It's my work-notebook for Captain America, along with some other cool Cap items, and all proceeds of the auction go to Gene and his wife.  Please bid if you can afford it and this is up your alley.

Big movie weekend

So, wow, I guess Summer if fully here.  I still haven't made it out to see Hulk yet, but this weekend sees two big movies released.

First, of course, WALL-E from Pixar is already getting rave reviews and will certainly make all parents happy, because Pixar simply makes the best animated all-ages fare in the world.  If I were a better and more versatile writer, I would be sleeping on Pixar's porch until they hired me, but I'm not that good, sadly.  I can't wait to see this.

And of course, there's WANTED, which is getting reviews like I haven't seen an action movie get since maybe the Matrix, the first one.  So, congrats to Mark Millar and JG Jones.  They're going to have a huge weekend and it's much deserved.  Mark and I are not pals or anything remotely like that, to be quite honest, but I hope he's got the biggest smile in the world today because he deserves to, and from what I've seen of it, the movie looks really fucking amazing.

So, good one - another blow for comics struck in modern culture, and I hope it kicks Hancock's ass all month long to remind H'wood why they need us.

Criminal 3 - out today!

I stole this from newsarama:

pick of the week: Criminal 3

Criminal 2 3

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' three-part Rashomon-style noir tale concludes in this issue. I'm not sure what to say about this, really, that I or other bloggers haven't already said. It's a fabulous series, quite possibly the best pamphlet comic being published, and the new, expanded format suits Brubaker and Phillips' talents nicely. If anything's worth your $3.50, this surely

Criminal 3 coming soon - Preview

Use the URL for images:

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=preview&id=375&disp=table

"*Female of the Species*" is the final piece to the noir puzzle of these three stories of crime and murder in the early 1970s. Told from the sympathetic POV of a Femme Fatale on her path to one final score and the revenge she's been waiting years to get. A heartbreaking look into the other side of a noir tradition.

And on top of this longer-than-usual length main story, CRIMINAL now features an *expanded* back-pages section, as well " with articles by Brubaker and other top crime writers, from novelists to screenwriters to comic writers. These noir articles have become a popular piece of the CRIMINAL package, and are something that can only be found in the comics, not in any collections. So don't miss out on this *standalone* issue of the most acclaimed crime comic on the stands!
