NYC’s MF Gallery’s Big Halloween Art Show
Sorry, I'm a little behind in posting this, but MF Gallery is having their annual Halloween Art Show. I have a couple pieces in the show, so if you live in the New York City area, stop on over and say hi to Martina and Frank and check out (and buy) some truly frightening art.
Here's the info:
WHAT: MF Gallery's Sixth Annual Halloween Art Show WHERE: ITM Lounge 463 West Broadway New York, NY 10012 WHEN: Opening Party, Saturday September 20th 7-10 PM. Show runs Sept 20th–Nov 2nd
It's almost that time of year again… Time for MF Gallery's Sixth Annual Halloween Art Show. This year, we are doing it in SoHo!
As many already know, June 2008 marked the closing of MF Gallery's Rivington Street location. As we prepare for our grand reopening in Gowanus, Brooklyn, MF Gallery is helping to launch a brand new art space: ITM Lounge, upstairs at I Tre Merli on West Broadway in SoHo.
SoHo has long been a significant neighborhood for New York City's Art Community. I Tre Merli Restaurant opened in the mid-1980's when the SoHo scene was thriving. Many "Art Stars" of the time, such as Andy Warhol, Peter Max, Keith Haring, and others were regulars at the bar.
With The Sixth Annual Halloween Art Show, MF Gallery will bring back a bit of the Underground Art flavor that the neighborhood has lately traded in for designer boutiques and chain stores.
This year's Halloween Art Show will include artists such as: Martina & Frank Russo Elmer Presslee, Chad Savage, Nicoz Balboa, Kevin Klemm, Drew & Greg Maillard, Fernando Carpaneda, Moses Jaen, Death Head, Alex Macchiavelli, Mike Annechiarico, James Wrona, Inky Dreadfuls, Ciou, & Many More!
The Opening Party, on Saturday September 20, 2008 will be a Rock N Roll Bash! Horror Movies will be projected on a giant screen, DJ Justin will play a Death Metal Soundtrack, drinks and refreshments will be served, and costumes are greatly encouraged: anyone who comes in a Halloween Costume will get a complementary drink! Admission is free and open to all ages, no RSVP required.
MF Gallery's Sixth Annual Halloween Art Show is at ITM Lounge: 463 West Broadway between Houston and Prince Streets. There are many subways close by: the N/R to Prince, the 6 to Spring, the C/E to Spring or the 1/9 to Houston. Gallery viewing hours are everyday from 12 noon to 12 midnight. To set up a guided visit, for additional information, or to request high resolution images, contact Martina or Frank at (917)446-8681 or info@MFgallery.net

King of Corpses.
Yesterday afternoon, Corpsy and I were the guests on L.A. Talk radio's "Out There" show, hosted by Jeff Rector. Working on just a few hours of sleep, I was a little punchy, but except for one moment where my train of thought evaporated away right when I started speaking, everything went well. I thought we were entertaining, but then again, I have a tendancy to think I'm funnier than I really am. But anyway, check it out for yourself:

"Out There" with Jeff Rector.
Jeff called me "The King of Corpses". I've never been called that before, and I kind of like it. It's good to be King!
BTW- Don't forget to come on out and see my Sideshow Art Show. Only at Hyaena Gallery, Burbank CA.

I need to get something off my chest...
Current mood: disappointed
I haven't been sleeping well, and can't sleep tonight, so I thought that maybe it's time to get some things off my chest so maybe I can sleep easy for a change.
Three days before Fango (The horror convention), one of my partners in Girls and Corpses Magazine was killed in a freak accident. Now it's not like Stephan was my best friend, and he and I butted heads about money quite frequently, but we had a good working relationship and I really respected him as a person.
That being said, it was a really hard decision whether we should go ahead with our booth at Fango. Robert and I put our heads together and decided to go ahead with the booth plans, but I was going to leave the corpse props at home, and we were going to make Stephan the focus of the weekend. Now one thing about Stephan is that he loved to surprise us. He had some new t-shirts printed especially for Fango that had the cover of our latest issue on the front of it. The day after Stephan died, we got a call that the shirts were ready. We didn't know anything about it, but Robert came up with an idea right away to have the printers print Stephan's initials on the sleave with the word RIP. It was our way of honoring our missing partner. We also decided to give the money from all the T-Shirt sales to his kids.
Now the supposed "Horror Community" that I think I'm a member of, is supposed to be a close knit and caring community. How many people do you think contacted me and asked how I was doing or to say they were sorry to hear about Stephan? Are you ready for this... One. That's right, just one person. D.W. Frydendall called me up to see how I was doing and to just check in. No one else. No e-mails, no nothing. Spooky Dan did a nice blog about Stephan (Which we really appreciated), but from the rest of our friends.... Nothing. I tried to contact a person at Creation entertainment for help in alerting people at the convention that we were trying to raise money with t-shirt sales to help Stephan's kids and didn't even get a return e-mail. I would have hoped that everyone of our friends would have showed their support and come by the booth and bought a shirt. Sadly, I didn't see a single one. If someone came by when I wasn't there and bought one, I owe you big time. Thanks for the love and support.
That was the toughest weekend I have ever spent. Trying not to depress everyone around you, but desperately needing the support of your friends. Even as fucked up mentally as I was, I tried to show my support of my friend RobG who was unveiling his Psycho documentary and hosting a Psycho reunion panel. I attended the panel and made sure I told him what a great job he did and how proud I was of him. I tried to conduct an interview with Eric Red, along with my buddies from Icons of Fright, even though my heart wasn't into it. But the worst part was at the end of the day. All I wanted was to hang out with my friends, have a beer and forget (for a little while) all the negative stuff from the last couple of days. But you know what, it never happened. Not one "friend" ever took the time to invite me to hang out and have a beer or whatever. I really needed to be around my friends at that time, and they were all no where to be found. I ended up riding the subway home by myself.
My whole life I've tried to be a stand up guy and a good friend. I try to be generous of myself and my time. I feel that I would do anyting for a friend. I try to support my friends endevours with both time and money, and I also try not to be a needy friend. I'm there for you, but I'm not high maintenance. I may not always be able to attend all your functions or parties or get togethers, but that's because I'm also a husband and a father and I have family responsibilities as well.
I guess in closing, it would be nice if people would go back to thinking about others first instead of themselves. Life is short, and instead of seeing how many famous friends one can collect, or how many business contacts I can make, maybe we should take a look at the true friend that standing back in the back of room, who may need a shoulder to lean on.
Just a thought...
I also want everyone to know that this is not intended as an attack or is directed at anyone in particular. I just feel that the horror community as a whole, really could have come together that weekend and made a difference at Fango, but sadly it was a missed opportunity.

RIP Stephan Miller
Current mood: sad
This loss is still too fresh for me to write about....
Even though we didn't see eye to eye sometimes, I had great respect for Stephan and really enjoyed hanging out with him. He was a big fan of my work and was always excited to see my latest creation. I never thought anyone decorated their house more than I did every Halloween, until I saw Stephan's house :)
RIP Stephan. Thank you for all your support of my work, and for taking Girls and Corpses Magazine from an internet magazine to a full fledged periodical. You will be greatly missed!

Our friend Don wrote a really nice tribute to Stephan. I wanted to share it with all of you.
RIP Gunslinger
Take care everyone, and remember life is short. Live life with passion! We only pass this way once and we don't know how long we are going to be here.

This is why I love Japanese Exploitation Films!
Current mood: ninja
What's up Geiners?
I love exploitation films. I grew up at the Drive-in, and my teenage years were spent watching the films of H.G. Lewis, Lucio Fulci, and Russ Meyer. When I was older I was hitting the Grindhouse cinemas of downtown Baltimore. One thing I developed during these formative years was a love of Japanese Exploitation. Everything from Sonny Chiba's Street Fighter films to the blood drenched Baby Cart series. As I grew older I fell in love with the Pinky Violence films and Lady Snowblood. The list goes on and on and on....
In recent years I was excited by such films as Wild Zero, Battle Royale, Versus, Suicide Club, and the films of Takashi Miike. Last year was kind of dry, but it looks like 2008 is starting to shape up as a year of non stop gore from the land of the rising sun.
First up, I'm not sure who borrowed from who, but "The Machine Girl" makes it's DVD debut on June 3rd.

This fun romp is a cross between Thriller, A Cruel Picture and Planet Terror. Throw in some Yakuzas, a machine gun arm, chainsaws, and enough blood and death to make even the most jaded gorehound giggle like a school girl, this film is not to be missed.
Want a sneak peek? Check out the trailer here:
http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1214128517/bctid1320139451
The other cool news is that the guy who handled the special make-up effects for "The Machine Girl", and "Suicide Club" is handling Director duties on Japans latest gorefest ""Tokyo Gore Police". Audition's Eihi Shiina stars as a cop forced to hunt down various mutants, the result of a man made virus run amok. The star of Versus, Tak Sakaguchi , handles all of the action scenes and one look at the trailer has me hooked. Be on the lookout to see this playing stateside sometime soon.
Check it out, Gorehounds:

Girls and Corpses, Toxic Toons, and Death by Taxes!
Hey Geiners,
I hope everyone had a fun April Fools Day. I love a good prank, but unfortunately I was so busy working on my taxes, I didn’t get a chance to pull one. Why do I do my own taxes? I don’t know... I guess I’m old school. I don’t think my finances are anyone’s business but my own, but I swear the paperwork is coming close to killing me this year.
Couple great things happening this week!
First up, our new issue of Girls and Corpses Magazine has just hit the newsstands! We are really proud of this issue and I think each issue we come up with gets better and better. So show us hard working gravediggers some love and go and pick up a copy! You can buy it online or at discriminating booksellers nationwide. Remember, we need your support to keep going. So if you love our magazine, buy it! Thanks for your support!

Next up...
A good friend of ours is having a solo art show at Hyaena Gallery in Burbank, CA.
The one, the only, Eric Pigors! Creator of Toxic Toons!
We featured Eric in our second issue of Girls and Corpses Magazine and he is not only a great artist, but he is also a great guy! He is a big supporter of our magazine and I would like to see all of you show your support for him and come on out to Hyaena Gallery this Saturday Night for the opening reception.

Click here to view the art and visit Hyaena’s Web Site.
I even purchased an original Pigors from the show. Here’s my acquisition-

So I hope to see a lot of you at the show on Saturday!
RIP
