Running really late
So apologies for my crap turn taking for emails and all other correspondences. I know I'm violating the norms on those things, but with 5 classes, two campuses, two conferences, three houseguests, two continents, and a partridge in a pear tree I'm white knuckling it. Thus.....I'm not going to Coachella. I just can't swing it and since Brian H isn't able to go either, I think it should just be cancelled. Actually, do have fun and I'll put some picks for the bands I would see if I went. Now onto other big news, there is going to be a big piece about my work in the Guardian Guide in the UK, yes the guide that people have sitting on their coffee tables for a whole week. They got some picture of me from my publisher, so god knows what one they'll send probably me looking fat. So if you want to see my glib responses to the origins of rock and roll, Elvis, and Woodstock (I finally got to take a pot shot at that one) find a way to get one. In the meantime there are quite a few special events for tonight. Tonight NME awards @ El Rey (I'm on but I can't go in without an extra for my musician houseguest, I don't want to call NME HQ for this)*-*-* Battles @ 86 (Melissa Renee rocks)***

Bittersweet Symphony
Just got back to the hotel after Coachella. Verve were amazing. They've transformed from an album band into a live band. Thanks Dana, Lyndsey, Mara, Sarah, and Alan for making it even more eventful.

Norway: Too fun for words
.. Begin .post -->
by:larm, Wendy Fonarow
Hun delte publikumsmassen inn i 3 soner. Wendy Fonarow blir kalt indiegoddess, her er siden hennes.

You only get what you give
Hi Indie Peeps,
So I got that horrid cold and haven't been able to do anything but work and on top of that I've been tormented by the parties and invites for SXSW. So even though I'm not going and I'm quite pouty about it, I'm giving y'all a list of the bands to keep an eye out for. After all, isn't that what this list all about. A few of them are coming to LA afterwards, but not as many as usual. What's up with that? Not all of us can go to Texas and eat at Guerro's!
Have fun!
SXSW:
Bands I'd see
Domino night: Kills, These New Puritans, Lightspeed Champion, Sons & Daughters;
Rogue Wave (that single is so good, it makes me have visceral memories)
Dead Confederate (They were the one good find at CMJ this year)
Ed Harcourt
REM,
Adele (being sold as new blue-eyed Amy, worth a look)
My Morning Jacket
Islands,
Future Pigeon, Pigeon Detectives,
Ida Maria (Just won the big prize at By:Larm)
Ungdomskulen (These guys are totally wild and unique)
Wombats (They have a song about dancing to joy division)
Ting Tings
Duke Spirit
Vampire Weekend
Be Your Own Pet
Aberfeldy
Dr. Dog
Nada Surf (always good to see)
Does it Offend you, Yeah? (Part of the new Shoreditch scene)
Lykke Li (Another hot band from Scandinavia)
Tilly and the Wall
Airborne Toxic Event (Yes, from Jess's recommendation)
OX, Eagle, Lion, Man (I'm gagging to check these out)
Cribs (Hey they always do a great job, but hands off, they are dangerous)
Ra Ra Riot
The Spinto Band
Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong (Thank goodness they are coming to LA)
Los Campesinos! (Saw them at Echo and they were good)
Stills (Still awesome)
M Ward
Autolux
White Denim
Bands I'd check out just cause I like the name. I've found some great bands using that criteria!
Mostly Bears (What makes up the other part)
Descartes a Kant (Great clash of minds)
Great Lakes Myth Society
Bruce Robinson (name of guy who wrote Withnail & I, does the name hold the key)
Beasts and Superbeasts
Scrambled Eggs (Come on, this has to be funny and from Lebanon)
The Victorian English Gentlemen's Club (I want to join, they must eat at Simpsons, except they are from Wales)
Tacks, the Boy Disaster (yes)

All That and a Bag of Chips
Hi Indie Peeps,
The By:Larm festival in Norway was phenomenal. Who knew Norway and Sweden had so much going on. The overall quality of bands was impressive, but only a couple really had a good fit for me, Benni Hemm Hemm and Umdomskulen (but they dedicated a song to me, so I'm biased – they did it cause I snuck out of the LA show, talk about being rewarded for bad behavior). I met Michael Azzerad too, who was very cool (not in the cold and distant way) and very intelligent. The talk went shockingly well and I could tell that people got a lot out of it. It was standing room only too. If you've not been to Norway, you have to go. I found out about a festival that will be giving ATP a run for its money – it is on an island of 300 people where bands play in grottos and there is midnight sun about the arctic circle. Jason Pierce played last year. The people are so generous and the party doesn't really get started until two when they've had enough alcohol to let their guards down. Of course, this meant there were several nights sitting outside on the roof of the opera house at 4am drinking champagne. I didn't have to pay as everyone kept saying that I was the keynote and a guest. This is a kinder gesture than you know because I bought a round of drinks at one of the "cheap" bars and it was 40 dollars for two beers and two pepsi colas! I'm now paying the price, but I'm hoping to be recovered by this weekend!

Is your bed made?
Hi Indie Peeps,
First of all, thanks to Ian M for throwing such a cool party for the Shins. That is what a post awards party should be like. Ok, I just have to talk about Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong. What a name. This band sound just like Razorlight and despite Razorlight's success in the UK, Johnny Borrell is universally despised there. I am convinced that the critically lauding of Joe Lean is just to wind up Johnny Borrell. I can just see the UK journalist tittering to themselves with perverse pleasure, let's take a band that sounds identical to RZL and say they are great, while saying RZL is crap at the same time. This is hysterical and makes me like Joe Lean even more. Personally I like Razorlight despite the fact that several English people have threatened to not be my friend for that opinion and someone at LastFM sent me a nasty email for listing them as a preference. That said, Joe Lean makes for a great sound bite. No one gets to the heart of the matter of a band better that humor journalist provocateur Tim Jonze. Here's a link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/theguide/features/story/0,,2215302,00.html

PS. At long last the walkie talkie phone has been put down like the sick dog it was, long live Sony Ericison.

The New Cornflakes
Hi Indie Peeps,
I'm back after a terrific trip to the UK. I did all my favorite things like riding on top of a double decker bus, running around the turbine hall at the Tate Modern, feeding the ducks, pub quiz, visiting friends, new pair of shoes, chips, toast, and a fancy meal on the strand. Even better, I got introduced to a load of hot new bands filled with enthusiasm and not a shred of cynicism. Hoxton Square is the new Camden and there are loft spaces filled with artists and musicians. There is no death pall of the "end of the industry" discourse, but that confidence that can only come from lack of experience. I'll give you a low down on the new UK best, but before that Jason needs to come over and undo whatever happened with my itunes (seriously dude it's a problem!). In the meantime, I've made a new list of up coming shows. I have a couple weeks before term and Norway and I'm looking forward to seeing y'all before I'm sequestered by students from all social life.
WLF
PS if you want more on the England trip, I wrote a little about it on my myspace page.

Parties and Premiers
Current mood: okay
Well it appears that October is the time to celebrate and I'm not just talking Halloween – so many birthdays and parties. After a week of going out solid, I'm home recovering and checking out some of the great music as of late – Ra Ra Riot, Sea Wolf (album is now out), No Age (OK a few weeks ago), GlasVegas (not sure how to get your hands on it, but I got sent some – yummy). Loads of parties in the early part of the month, then CMJ and then, well it's the lead up to Halloween with my annual lectures on Halloween and Day of the Dead. Let me know if those are talks you might want to visit. They are some of the best of the year. WLF P.S. It is feed a fever

In or Out
Hi indie peeps,
There is a bewildering number of shows and events that are coming up. I think I had started thinking too far ahead (New York, London, Oslo). So for some idiotic reason I didn't go to Kings of Leon at the Greek. Apparently, it was amazing, because I got loads of texts from you lot at the show. At least, Saturday night was fun (good going Jeff). I'll try not to get so sucked into the new term and make sure I have a bit of time from decadence. At least I've been doing some home cooking. My neighbors have got to try my southern Italian and Indian leftovers.

standing in the ashes at the end of the world
Heya indie peeps,
Just a quick list so that you all can know that Kronos Quartet are playing California Plaza tomorrow night (Thursday) and playing they are playing the music from the Fountain. This is a must (except for those of you at Burning Man -- hope you had fun when you get this). I recently stayed at the Luxe in a room that overlooked the Plaza and got to listen to the music through the window and had a wander through on my way LACMA for their night visions. California Plaza gives you that wonderful feeling of LA -- families from the 4 true quadrants, an open air plaza with a small breeze and the sound of water flowing. It's right by Angel's Flight as well (we contemplated running up it, but it's not a great idea to to trespass on uneven terrain in 4 inch heels).
P.S. Saw No Age at Amoeba they were killer. The album is sort of mogwai meets gun club, slightly out of key. Ride on Rides and Oliver Future were also recent great shows. Oh and I found Hell's Kitchen (Thanks Joe!!!). Oh which ones of you are Slowdive/Mojave Fans? Let me know.

De by:larm-sidene hadde flere svakheter for navigeringen i informasjonen.
Nå fant jeg det ja. Du snakker. Det var ikke lett.
