Fergus Falls Area Habitat for Humanity Affiliate – Winter 2007
Current mood: sick
Category: News and Politics
Open Door Grant Makes Wahpeton House a Reality Habitat for Humanity International, our parent organization, has announced that our Affiliate has won a $25,000 grant from the Open Door program. This is a program of the HFHI Church Relations office. This means that we WILL be building in Wahpeton in 2007. This is a matching funds grant and will require donations from churches in Wahpeton and Breckenridge. This home is actually already under construction. This home is going to be built using panel construction. We received the panel plans from Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. This means that we will be building the house indoors at our Foxhome Re-Sale Store. We will then move the completed panels by semi to Wahpeton. Otter Tail Power Makes Printing Donation This newsletter is the result of a generous donation in printing services by Otter Tail Power. Our newsletters have been printed by Otter Tail Power for the past two years. We are especially happy to continue this partnership. Our thanks go out to Otter Tail Power and especially to Scott Nelson, Rick Baker and all of the crew that work so hard to make our newsletter look great.
Covenant Community Fund Raising Dinner – March 22 Prante's at 1605 N 11th Street in Wahpeton, North Dakota, is the place to be for good fun, good food and good fundraising for Habitat for Humanity's work in Wilkin and Richland counties. The time has come again for our annual dinner to honor the hard work and dedication that comes from Breckenridge, Wahpeton and the surrounding communities. March 22, 2007 is the day, 6 p.m. is the time. The menu is two meats with vegetable and desert. Come hungry and ready to spend a quality evening with people that share your commitment to providing safe, decent and affordable housing to those in need. Much good work has been done in Fairmount over the winter and we are preparing to begin work on a home on Second Avenue North in Wahpeton. This is a great chance to break bread together as we reflect on where we have been and look at where we can go if we continue to work together to make real the end of poverty housing in our community. Doors open at 6 p.m. with punch and socializing, dinner will be served at 6:30 with a program to follow. Please RSVP to the office in Fergus Falls at 218-736-2905 or by email at fergushabitat@yahoo.com
Volunteer Time Equals Cash for Affiliate Mark your calendars for March 2. It is a very important day for our quickly concluding rehabilitation in Fairmount, ND. Thanks to a generous grant from the Wells Fargo Housing Foundation, 10 volunteers on site on Friday, March 2, means $2,500 towards the cost of the house. Spring is just around the corner and is a time of new beginnings. It is, also, for us, a time of completions. We are nearing the end of work in Fairmount, but we need your help to make it to the home dedication. Join a group of Wells Fargo employees for a day of fun and hard work that will help make poverty housing history for one more family. Our Affiliate does cover a large area—from east of Battle Lake well into North Dakota—and Fairmount is definitely a trek for most of us, but that does not mean that our help is not needed. In fact, its relative isolation means that your dedication to make the trip is even more vital. Jones Family Benefit Dinner in Elbow Lake -- March 25 Join us at the Rock Prairie Lutheran Church, 4th Avenue South East, Elbow Lake, MN, on March 25, for a spaghetti feed fundraiser to benefit dedicated Board Member (and celebrated pianist for the Christmas carol sing-along at our December dinner in Fergus Falls) Jan Jones and her husband. Jan has been a member of our Board of Directors and our Family Selection committee for three years. All funds raised at the dinner will be matched by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. VFW Fund Raising Dinner Held on February 16 On Friday, February 16, the VFW hosted a fund raising dinner for our Affiliate. Over 150 people came out and helped us raise funds for building new homes. We also got the opportunity to show off our new table-top display and our big "Valentines Day Heart-Shaped Box." We raised nearly $1,000 as a result of the dinner. Our thanks go out to all who attended, to the VFW, and to the folks that helped serve and clean-up the meal. Special thanks to the kitchen crew for their great work; to Pam Johnson, Scott Fritz and his daughter, Shirley and David Seyfried, Norv and Marjorie Rueckert, Mary Matteson, Wendy Molstad, Betty Brockopp, Michael Urness, David Raffery, and all the rest that helped out.
What we need TODAY: We have some immediate needs for materials. We are looking for 2X6 lumber, for siding (will help remove good quality used siding), for a cement mixer, for paint brushes, drywall screws, framing nails, kitchen and bathroom sinks, any kitchen cabinets in good condition. We need people TODAY that can: hang drywall, tape and texture, paint ceilings, lay carpet, install vinyl siding, paint walls interior and exterior, apply stucco, landscape including planting grass and weeding, remove wall paper, hang blinds and shades, shovel and move dirt. Now more than ever we need volunteer assistance. If you have ever thought of having a "work day" event for your social club or church, now is the time to contact our office. You might even have fun like these folks from Concordia College! Contact us at 219-736-2905 for donations.
