To All the Loved Ones in My Life

So here's the 411 on me and the next 4 months;
For those of you who don't know, I am FINALLY graduating next Spring, and am taking an internship class this fall. I had initially been asked by brilliant ULV professor Dr. Scott to work as an intern via directed study with him to accomplish research on measures of heterosexism, (a cultural construct that utilizes hetersosexuality as the only normative behavior and assumes all other sexuality to be a form of deviance).
This was equivalant to Dr. Scott handing me the keys to the castle, since his offer included my name as an author on his published research paper, and a trip to Portugal to present the study to an international cutural psychology conference. To those of you not familiar with the world of science academia, this is a REALLY BIG DEAL for any person, much less a person who has yet to have earned a doctorate. The frosting on the cake would be that such experience in research makes me a likely candidate for a funded graduate program.
Of course, something this great would probably come with a challenge, and this challenge came in the form of ULV policy, which dictates that my internship must occur outside of campus. :-( This isn't too tragic, because Dr.Scott has allowed me to stay on despite my not receiveing credit for the work, (I will, however, learn how to accomplish sound research, which is what I want to do anyhoo).
The long and the short of this little journal I have written for y'all is that there has never been a semester where I have been so sucked in to my work. I still have to accomplish a "for credit" internship in addition to my work with Dr. Scott.
Think you rarely see me now? You will probably not see, talk, or hear from me for several months. Please just know that if you are on my friends list, particularly on my "top" friends list, that I love you, you have a HUGE influence in my life, and inspire me. I think of y'all often and hope to have time for a social life when all this is done.
Wish me luck! I'm out to change the world one policy at a time!
We did this two weeks ago, but I just haven't had time to post pictures until now! With our vintage suitcases, our CRV, and a stack of 20's ragtime, the Decemberists, and Blonde Redhead cds, we took our time driving up the coast. We stopped occasionly for pics or burgers. Michael and I found a cute little renovated 1950's motel across the street from the beach of Cayucos, (20 minutes northwest of San Luis Obispo). We would wake up in a foggy, seaside hamlet with one little main drag, drive past Morro Rock and in to blue skies and sunshine! Breakfast at the Blue Sky Cafe, with the best pancakes and huevos rancheros...mhhmmm, nothing but full tummies and comfy shoes to take us places: Here's what it was like! In Santa Barbara, next to some stamp press from a million years ago or something, not a flattering pose, but funny: Here's the press itself. Neat, huh? Just being swell: We first drove north to Cambria for breakfast, where Michael thought it was too cold, (meaning he had to put on long sleeves) I, however, did not mind the chill In to the sunshine we go! We visited the San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens, a far cry from the Huntington Gardens here in Pasadena, but quite lovely and fun, nonethless: I got freckles in the sun, A very large plant: Gargie and I spy California partridge babies, but no pics of them :-( We did get a baby bunny, though Gargie is interested in some native American chumash ho ho hut: We explore Michael drawing the alien plant It was toasty out, and Gargie found a water source before we could provide her with one back in the car: We found that one of my favorite old hangouts, the Coffee Merchant, is now Uptown Espresso. It still roasts it's own coffee, and has lovely shaded patio seating in the heart of everything: In the evening we explored the farmer's market, which is a big to do in a small town, and picked up a couple of barbqued ribs for Gargie and a bunch of tacos from Tio Albertos for ourselves. We found a romantic and picturesque spot at the side of the creek that runs through downtown SLO and proceeded to pig out: oh, wait, how did this get in? The next day we found a beautiful seaside cemetary, which had a silly dog policy, or at least Gargie thought so: Lots of perfect little photos on the markers Three children who died the same year.. On the way home, a good trip was had by all!
