Nun’s on a run!
Current mood: drunk
Category: Music
Hi there,
It's been a really great time for all at Flying Nun recently.
Following on from the beautiful Shocking Pinks album (and just for the record, we will also be bringing you the next Shocking Pinks album from DFA in NZ and Australia) came the sublime album from the Phoenix Foundation, 'Happy Ending'.
'Happy Ending' debuted at an incredible number 5 in the New Zealand national album chart, as well as being at number 1 on the NZ i-tunes album chart during the same week.
Then came the Mint Chicks at the NZ Music Awards who won Album Of The Year for 'Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No!' along with Group Of The Year, Rock Album Of The Year, Video Of The Year (for Sam Peacocke's clip for Crazy?Yes!Dumb? No!), and Cover Art Of The Year.
We've been trawling back through the dusty archives for the last Flying Nun winner of Album Of The Year and going way, way back stumbled across The Headless Chickens...so congratulations to the Mint Chicks - it's been a while between drinks for us and we're incredibly proud of you.
...and we're not done there! There's one more Flying Nun release this year and in many ways we've placed the cherry on top of the years cake by bringing you the first studio album in 10 years by The Verlaines!!
A track from the incredible 'Pot Boiler' is up on our cover page now to listen to entitled 'It's Easier To Harden A Broken Heart (Than Mend It)'. 'Pot Boiler' will be released on Dec 10th in NZ, and fingers crossed Worldwide through i-tunes at the same time.

Bright Grey
Current mood: excited
Bright Grey
Single & Video Released,
Bright Grey – the first single from The Phoenix Foundations highly anticipated 3rd studio album Happy Ending has been released and is now available for download online through iTunes, Digirama, and also Telecom and Vodafone Mobile phones.
The follow up to their gold selling album Pegasus released in 2005, Happy Ending will be released through Flying Nunn Records on October 8.
"Bright Grey started its life as synthy instrumental thing for possible use in the film Eagle Vs Shark. The demo was very pleasing indeed so the band stole it back for our own filthy purposes…. the lyrics are a direct result of the cosmic malaise that came over New Zealand during that crazy period when were visited by a comet. Its kind of future angst as imagined by a 12 year old boy in 1983. A distopian nightmare of our own boredom." Says Vocalist/guitarist Samuel Flynn Scott
New Bright Grey Video:
The amazing new video for the single was released to Music Television this week. The video, shot in Island Bay, Wellington over one, long 16-hour day in mid August, was directed by Oscar nominated Taika Waititi (Two Cars One Night, Eagle Vs Shark), with whom The Phoenix Foundation wrote the soundtrack for his latest box office film Eagle Vs Shark.
Developed by the Samuel Flynn Scott and Luke Buda (who spend way too many hours on you Tube…), the concept was inspired by Japanese 'synth pop' legends Yellow Magic Orchestra, and features loads of synths, bored musicians, the 'Back to the Future' car, an audience of weird 80's kids, heaps of dried ice…….and all things cool..

Heavenly Pop Hits: The Flying Nun Story
As part of the New Zealand Music month celebrations Satellite Media's documentary Heavenly Pop Hits: The Flying Nun Story will be screening on the Sky Documentary channel...:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
'Heavenly Pop Hits: The Flying Nun Story commemorated the 21st anniversary of the home-grown indie record label Flying Nun. Established in the South Island during the early 1980's, Flying Nun gave fledgling Kiwi bands such as The Chills and Straightjacket Fits their first taste of recording and releasing music. Renowned for recording music for music's sake rather than promoting songs purely for their commercial value, Flying Nun Records gained an international reputation for releasing great alternative Kiwi music. More recently Flying Nun had bands like the D4 and The Mint Chicks on its books.'
Don't miss this insight into a classic piece of ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />New Zealand music history.

the chills, the clean and sneaky feelings...
the chills, the clean and sneaky feelings...are all playing at one gig in dunedin - read below for more information!
love flying nun xxx
DUNEDIN HERITAGE FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FULL RESOUND LINEUP. It's official RESOUND- Three Decades of Dunedin Sound, 23 March 2007 Regent Theatre- is set to be the Dunedin rock concert of the new millennium. Get ready for an unforgettable blast of Dunedin rock through the ages, from the 70's through to 2007.
Dunedin's inaugural Heritage Festival has pulled off the unimaginable all under one roof: Mother Goose, The Clean and Sneaky Feelings are all reforming to take the stage alongside the inimitable Chills. This showcase of Dunedin rock icons is joined by contemporary Dunedin sounds that include Onanon, Gestalt Switch, Taking The Fall, Delgirl, Freddy Fudd Pucker and Anji Sami; indisputable proof that Dunedin's music scene is still rocking.
Festival Director, Caroline Cook says it's been hard to keep the line –up under wraps. "There has been so much interest in this concert, so many rumours and so much excitement building that it's been difficult to keep a lid on it. This will be a unique event, not just because of the calibre of artists performing but because it is being embraced as a true celebration of the energy and creativity that Dunedin unleashes in those who live here. For many people it will be a rare opportunity to experience live, Dunedin bands that have had the world's music media in raptures." Production Manger Scott Muir comments, "This will be a real journey through the decades and will have appeal to a wide cross section of ages."
70's band Mother Goose will don their outrageous costumes and deliver their 'speedy mixture of sophisticated music and stage presentation'. Drummer Marcel Rodeka says, " It was a unique piece of rock'n roll, vaudeville, theatre that just seemed to hit the mark wherever it played." These Dunedin boys, many of them schoolmates with a couple of ring-ins from Alexandra and an Otago Boys High boarder from Heriot, hatched Mother Goose inside the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band clubrooms. 18 months later they were the biggest act in Australia breaking house attendance records wherever they played while other bands fell over themselves fighting to be their support act including Cold Chisel, Men at Work, Aussie Crawl, and Midnight Oil. For keyboard player Steve Young, "It was a huge adventure, we were made for TV, it was massive." Young adds, "We had had thoughts of reforming before but decided that we didn't want to pretend that we were 20 again. It's taken the Heritage Festival to motivate us because we are all proud to be part of Dunedin's heritage." www.dunedinmusic.com
In walks the 80's, the Flying Nun label and the band who started it all, The Clean. Dunedin brothers Hamish and David Kilgour regroup with Robert Scott, aka the Bats, to serve up the fruits of their 'free-flowing chemistry and musical experimentation'. Hamish Kilgour now lives in New York and plays in his band The Mad Scene. David Kilgour was and still is an integral part of Dunedin's unique sound of the eighties and nineties and continues to impress at home in Dunedin, throughout New Zealand and in parts of the States where he has acquired a cult status. The Clean reform periodically, as it suits their creative desires, and this time, to celebrate Dunedin's music legacy, it suits just fine. www.flyingnun.co.nz/archive_site/
Flying Nun's most successful band The Chills are as musically powerful today as they were in the 80's. Martin Phillipps is Dunedin through and through. Says Phillipps "I feel recharged in Dunedin." And that recharging continues to fuel the live energy that makes The Chills one of the most well-known New Zealand groups to date - particularly in the U.S.A., U.K. and Europe. The Heritage Festival gets the thumbs up from Phillips, "I think it is a special thing to celebrate the unusual amount of wonderful music that has come out of this city. It is worth celebrating and I am thrilled to still be around to be part of it. We are a band that has been around for more than a quarter of a century and we are especially excited about the music we are playing today, it feels as relevant as anything we are hearing." www.softbomb.com
Mathew Bannister is returning to Dunedin to head up the multi-voiced harmonies of Sneaky Feelings and is sold on the idea of the concert. "It's a great idea and so good that we are choosing to be proud of our culture and achievements, not just our rugby, so good that the cultural cringe is dying out.". As a 17 yr old boy from Scotland, Mathew couldn't believe his luck with the emerging music scene he found in the city he'd emigrated to in the 80's. Get ready for that jangle sound of guitars and be prepared for a touch of the new generation as Mathew's sons Tom (15) and Albert (12) add a touch of brass to the performance. www.flyingnun.co.nz/archive_site/
Supporting acts for the concert tell their own story of Dunedin's creative rock scene. There's the generational thing, influences from the past, and family and school mate connections; there's the eternal youth that keeps pouring into the city at the start of each University year; and there's the utmost encouragement to do whatever you want to do; the perfect environment to experiment and be original.
Onanon - "...one of the most interesting things to scuttle out of the Dunedin underground..." (Bill Morris, Pavement Magazine). Onanon guitarist, Don Ferns gives substance to the claim that they are presently one of the most Dunedin sounding bands, "some of the first songs we ever played were from The Clean… there was just something about that early Dunedin sound that made you want to play music…." www.myspace.com/onanonnz
Gestalt Switch –" This is a band getting seriously good seriously quickly." (Max Johns, dunedinmusic.com ) This self confessed old rock 'n' roll band has roots in Otago Uni's Contemporary Music programme run by Graeme Downes (Verlaines). They are going places loudly. www.gestaltswitch.co.nz
Freddy Fudd Pucker aka Two Fat Ladies frontman, Tom Young –"a ' raw talent worth keeping in sight' (Sunday Star Times). The irreverence in his music runs in the family… son of Mother Goose founder Steve Young who took the piss out of 70's rock by injecting it with vaudeville… Freddy's cynicism has much the same affect in the ' noughties'. http://youtube.com (Search: Freddy Fudd Pucker for video)
Delgirl – "Double Bass, Guitar, Percussion, Trumpet and Ukuele all get a look-in accompanied by 3 of the sweetest voices you are likely to hear this side of the black stag." (dunedinmusic.com ). Delgirl play skiffily, folky, country, gospley, jazzy, bluesy music with a Pacific flavour! www.delgirl.co.nz www.myspace.com/delgirl
Anji Sami – "Sami became of musical age in Dunedin. a shining light on the Dunedin music scene" (Pavement Magazine) Sami has proven she can captivate an audience with just her guitar, her voice and her songs. www.myspace.com/anjisami
Taking The Fall –"..a step up from most with a unique, almost Blindspott sound as well as great energy and build-up." Bevan O'Connor (dunedinmusic.com) Winner of last year's Otago Smoke Free Rock Quest, TTF are too young to remember the bands they will support, too excited to care, but old enough to never forget the experience. www.myspace.com/takingthefalls

THE CLEAN are reforming for a NZ Tour....
Current mood: chipper
Press release:
22nd January 2007
Mystery Girl is pleased to announce a New Zealand tour by local music legends
The Clean
The Clean's pre-eminent place in New Zealand music history comes down to two factors - their unchallengeable position as The Band That Started It All 25 and a bit years ago, and the group's absolute dedication to free-flowing chemistry and musical experimentation in the pursuit of creating incredible records and live shows.
The importance of the former and the influence of the latter over a huge stream of musicians in New Zealand and around the world ever since cannot be under-estimated.
The Clean have toured New Zealand and the world intermittently since their formation 25 and a bit years ago, influencing influential bands such as Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Lampchop and more. They were also the band that kick started the Flying Nun record label – who have also just celebrated their 25th birthday.
The Clean made their debut live performance with the Enemy in 1978 and their first recordings in 1981. These included the single "Tally Ho" which as folklore would have it was recorded for a total of $60, and their first EP Boodle Boodle Boodle – which went top five in the NZ charts. From the outset Hamish Kilgour played drums, David Kilgour picked up the guitar and various other folk passed through. After the first two years or so Robert Scott joined on bass. Hamish, David and Robert all wrote songs and they all sang. Memorable early tracks include "Billy Two", "Anything Could Happen", "Beatnik" and "Getting Older", "Point That Thing" and instrumentals "Fish" and "At The Bottom".
The Clean had broken up around 1983 with David particularly tired of the pressure of their relative success. The band wasn't back together again until they met up and played a show in London in the late 'eighties.
That London reunion show led to a New Zealand tour and then The Clean's first world tour. Back in London in 1989, they recorded their first full-length album for UK label Rough Trade and Flying Nun back home. Vehicle was made in three days and engineered by Alan Moulder (later to become one of the top producers of the alternative era, recording the Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails and My Bloody Valentine).
In 1994 the Clean released Modern Rock and in 1996 Unknown Country, which saw organ and other keyboards adding to the grooves, as The Clean mixed bouncing pop tunes with continued experimentation. In 1997 a Clean Tribute album called "God Save the Clean" was released featuring international artists such as Guided by Voices, Barbra Manning & Calexico and Pavement, as well as locals contributions ranging from Gray Bartlett to HDU. The Clean released yet another great album in 2001 entitled Getaway and a US tour was interrupted in New York by the 9/11 disaster. In 2002 a double Anthology CD was released by Flying Nun in New Zealand and Merge in the US.
In between these various Clean activities, Robert Scott started The Bats, David and Hamish Kilgour played in the Great Unwashed with The Clean's original bassist, Peter Gutteridge, and Hamish headed to New York (where he still resides) with Bailterspace. David recorded and released five solo albums, and is about to release his sixth "The Far Now" in New Zealand and Australia on Arch Hill Recordings/Remote Control and the US on Merge.
The Clean story is on-again/off-again purely by design - it suits the trio's creative desires and keeps them clear of the machinery that threatened to interfere with that process from the moment they threatened to get awfully popular awfully quickly twenty five years ago. It is five years since their last tour of New Zealand, so these are shows not to be missed by any fan of the band or the sound
Wellington – Friday 16th March – San Francisco Bath House Auckland – Saturday 17th March – The Studio Leigh – Sunday 18th of March - Leigh Sawmill Cafe Oamaru – Wednesday 21st of March - Penguin Club Dunedin – Friday 23rd of March - Heritage Festival Christchurch – Saturday 24th March - Jetset Lounge Lyttleton – Sunday 25th March - Harbourlight
Tickets on sale nationally from 29th January at Ticketmaster.co.nz, Real Groovy stores and Fast & Loose in Auckland.
