Future Address

Here is the address that you will be able to mail me at in the near future:

Christopher Flyr, PCV
Peace Corps/Vanuatu
PMB 9097
Port Vila
Vanuatu, South Pacific

Just some notes about this. Snail mail is pretty quick at 1-3 weeks. Packages take longer and can be subject to inspections, taxes, and fines. If a fine or tax is placed on it then it will be held until I can come down and pay it. I have no clue as to what items are heavily taxed yet. Also I hear it is common that if a customs agent looks and see something he likes then it just may become his!!! So be warned.

With talking to some other volunteers in the RTC progam it seems they have internet access about 3-6 months. So please, lets bust out our pen and paper and send some good ole fashioned letters. They will be greatly appreciated.

I have one month left so I hope I get to see everyone before I leave.

Two week notice

Well I put my two week notice in at work today. Wow to any one who has not done that in a while let me tell you how good it feels. While I was a little nervous at first that soon went away as my boss began giving me a list of reports that he needed. When I walked out of the office I had a little more giddy up in me that is for sure. Could not wipe the big goofy grin off my face as I walked past all those miserable souls.

I have seven weekends left and they are all pretty full. I am looking forward to spending time with everyone. We will be having a shin dig at my good friends house and would love to see eveyone there. it will be prety low key. Lots of beer wine and cocktails.

Well Drop me a line and say hello!

Peace Corps Invitation

Hola mi amigos!!!

Well I as many of you know I have finally received my Peace Corps invitation. On September 21 I will be heading to my staging area, where I will meet up with all of the new Peace Corps volunteers heading to my country of Vanuatu. My fellow PCVs will be for a variety of programs, from health to education. The program I was invited for is an Agro-economics program.

I will most likely on one of the smaller islands, in a Rural Training Center. At these training centers, I will be teaching the children who do not make it into secondary school practical skills and promoting agirculture as a viable way of life. 65% of there economy comes from agriculture. Luckily for me Coconuts are a major crop there. So much for that 12 step program that finally got me over my coconut addiction. They use coconut for everything!!

Vanuatu is a series of 80 islands located in the Pacific Islands. There land mass equals that of Connecticut, however it is spread out over the same sea area as about california. The language that I will be learning is a pigin english language. I will also be attempting to learn the local villagers native language as well.

I will try to keep everyone posted as my departure approaches and I look forward to hearing from everyone!!

Peace Corps Nomination
Category: Goals, Plans, Hopes

Well I am no longer Peace Corps Applicant... I am officially a Peace Corps Nominee now!! Now then this is just one more step in a very lengthy process. What this means is that I have been nominated to a program, which i will describe below. Now that I am nominated I will have to pass my Medical, Dental, and Background checks. The medical portion averages 8-12 weeks to go through. Once the Medical Corps clears me for travel, I then become elligable for an Invitation from the peace corps. The invitation gives the exact date of depature and which country I would be stationed at.

So the program I was Nominated for is an Agri-business program. My primary focus would be working with Youth to promote new and sustainable resources of crops or livestock. I would also be working to create small co-ops to create more profit the community.

Now then everyone wants to know where I am going? Well right now I only have a general region of the world. Now this can change all the way up until my invitation and on rare cases the departure.  But as it stands right now I am slotted for the Pacific Islands.

I know how will i ever make it there? Its all about the sacrafices!
