The Free Press Salutes
Nathan Runkle and Mercy for Animals The Free Press is pleased to reort that the central Ohio-based Mercy for Animals was named "Nonprofit of the Year" by VegNews magazine. Runkle, also a Free Press animal rights writer, was cited as an "effective force for change" and VegNews noted that Runkle uses cutting edge, modern design and pro-veg MTVC-style commercials to reach a young audience. Perhaps most significant is that Runkle won this award at the age of 22. Mercy for Animals, along with the Free Press is a member of Community Shares of Mid-Ohio.

RIP Steve Conliff (1949 - 2006)
From Bill Finzel:
"I'm sorry to say that Steve Conliff has just died. He was recently diagnosed with lung cancer & had been hospitalized for pneumonia. That is all that I know at this time, but I will send more information when I have it. Steve was a friend of 26 years. Most of you know that he and his son Byron had recently completed an anthology of the earliest years of the Free Press. Steve is survived by his wife, Sue Bird Conliff, and their two sons, Byron and Leon, and will be missed by his many friends in the activist community."

Free Press uncovers evidence of ballot tampering in Warren County, Ohio
Category: News and Politics
Greetings,
The following article was just posted to the website of The Free Press ( http://freepress.org ). Check it out today!
Free Press uncovers evidence of ballot tampering in Warren County, Ohio by Bob Fitrakis and Richard Hayes Phillips
After locking out all media observers and declaring a Level 10 Homeland Security Alert, the Republican-dominated Warren County, Ohio reported in the wee hours of the morning on November 3, 2004 -- and gave George W. Bush a surprising 14,000 vote boost. Two election workers told the Free Press that the ballots had been diverted to an unauthorized warehouse where they had been possibly stuffed. That is, punched for Bush only. Maps were supplied to the Free Press showing the locations of the warehouse and the Board of Elections.

Are mainstream churches finally standing up to the GOP’s hateful “Christian” blitzkrieg?
Category: News and Politics
Are mainstream churches finally standing up to the GOPs hateful Christian blitzkrieg? by Bob Fitrakis and Harvey Wasserman April 9, 2006
Right-wing church movements have been a staple of American politics since well before the 1692 witch trials at Salem. But only in the past few decades has the extremist church served as the grassroots base for a new breed of corporate totalitarianism. That unholy union has been nowhere more powerful than here in Ohio, and it has finally provoked a response from the states mainstream churches.

Shocking Diebold conflict of interest revelations

Shocking Diebold conflict of interest revelations from Secretary of State further taint Ohio's electoral credibility by Bob Fitrakis and Harvey Wasserman April 6, 2006
Ohio is reeling with a mixture of outrage and hilarity as Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell has revealed that he has owned stock in the Diebold voting machine company, to which Blackwell tried to award unbid contracts worth millions while allowing its operators to steal Ohio elections. A top Republican election official also says a Diebold operative told him he made a $50,000 donation to Blackwell's "political interests."

The new face of apartheid: J. Kenneth Hackwell's Ohio
Category: News and Politics
Greetings,
The following article was just posted to the website of The Free Press ( http://freepress.org ). Check it out today!
The new face of apartheid: J. Kenneth Hackwell's Ohio by Bob Fitrakis March 30, 2006
The most unprincipled and opportunistic man in the history of Ohio, Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell, stands poised to claim the Republican primary for governor. Blackwell and his far-right theocratic "rapture-ready" Christian dominionists will doom the Buckeye State to further despair.

Is the Mainstream Media finally getting half the rigged voting machine story?
Category: News and Politics
Greetings,
The following article was just posted to the website of The Free Press ( http://freepress.org ). Check it out today!
Is the Mainstream Media finally getting half the rigged voting machine story? by Bob Fitrakis and Harvey Wasserman March 29, 2006
The fact that electronic voting machines don't work may finally be sinking into a segment of the mainstream media. The fact that e-voting machines can, have been, and will be used to steal elections, continues to go unreported.
