I recently received an email that a drawing I completed two years ago was copied and used in a Mass. paper. At first, I thought this was kind of funny and even cute, so I called the editor to tell him about it. He took it very seriously, and it turns out it was published in many places under the New York Times News Group publication syndicates. This made me less amused... this is wrong.
The Manager of the NY office has contacted me to apologize and to tell me that an investigation is underway, but after hearing the opinion of a lawyer (not yet hired, just a friend) it seems that litigation may be the only answer.
The point is, check yourself. I received a call from the scumbag husband, all but calling me a liar in this situation. I have many many facets of proof, be it witnesses, original art, 'file created' dates on my laptop, web-server logs documenting when I uploaded it, and even backlogs of ConcepArt.org where I used it as an avatar, nearly TWO YEARS ago. All this, and this man was telling me that his wife would never do that... that I must be honest about it. I couldn't believe he had the gall to call for his wife, the thief. After this settled, I was not happy.
Don't let this sort of thing go, ever. I've seen way too many versions of my artwork - work that I ponder, devise, research, reference and create over hours and hours and with years of practice and experience... only to have some hack cut/past/filter it into a paycheck. This time it was on a much larger scale, so it's time to put a stop to it. I personally feel this woman has earned her pinkslip, 10-fold.

Here are a few videos done last year by SO! animation. These are so damn funny! Feel free to post, spread and share them where you please, and go to YouTube to rate them:
Surely, Meg used to be a not-so-good drummer, and Jack White rode on his appearance and fuzzy guitar, but when it all settled, it's hard to argue that they're both not talented. It may have taken 8 years of popularity and the loss of the full-sound, but videos like this one I stumbled upon show that they may not be as popular or cool, but the talent is there, in full force. (keep an eye on the 4:00 mark...)

This is pretty much for the benefit of caricature artists who are sending emails, calls, resumes and applications to any art job they can find, or friends of those people.
I understand that freelancing is tough and you have to be a go-getter. I was tenaciously sending out postcards to small papers for years. There is a mindset that "if I send my stuff to everyone, someone will like it and want work." I agree, it's true, but not always tactful.
At work, we're receiving a call or email weekly for an interview or 'talking' about how whatever-caricaturist-it-is-that-week wants to talk about working together or come in for an interview. Well what they don't know is that SO! animation consists of 6 people, and 4 around on any given day. I am working as a Creative Director for character work or Character Designer. It's not a situation where they're hiring lots of caricaturists to do gigs or anything - they're keeping the studio very small, and it took a lot of deliberation for them to decide to bring a 2d artist on board. They are making a long-term investment.
It's not a big deal, but my boss affectionately asks from time to time if I'm "spreading the word" or "what I'm saying to my friends" - so for the sake of peace, it'd be best if a caricaturist doesn't apply or email them, because they're really not looking for a caricaturist.
Hope this doesn't sound too mean. It's meant to be as objective as possible.
