The Half Racks have disbanded
The subject says it all. The Half Racks have disbanded, and we will not be playing a farewell show. We have parted on good terms.
Justin Combustion has been wanting to move to Portland for some time now, and he's going to do that now that he has sold his house. We had hoped to play a farewell show or two, but balancing everyday life, school and preparing for the move has proven to be very chaotic without adding practices and shows to his schedule. Something had to give, and in this case it was the band.

'Coffee Now' will not be released as a CD, but free mp3s of the songs will be made available when they are finished. I'll try to make the completion of this album a higher priority in the near future.
On behalf of the band, I would like to thank anyone that ever came to a show to see us play. It was fun to share the stage with these guys.
If you'd like to keep up with any of our future musical escapades, feel free to check out our individual Myspace profiles:

Thanks again, y'all. It's been a good run.

Day 589 - Q-Tip - Gettin’ Up
For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.
DAY 589 Q-Tip - Gettin' Up From "The Renaissance"

Rock the Bells is a gigantic hip hop fesitval that is coming to the Gorge. For me it would be worth attending just to see De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, MF Doom and Rakim but there's a ton of other legendary acts that will be performing. Unfortunately, I don't believe I will be attending, and I'll probably kick myself for years to come.
I first heard 'Gettin' Up' on the Rock the Bells website and it blew me away. In my opinion, this track is right up there with the greatest output from A Tribe Called Quest. I can repeatedly listen to this without getting sick of it.
Now I'm excited to hear how 'The Renaissance' turns out. There is no artwork available as I type these words, but the album is supposed to be released this year. Honestly, I can't remember the last time when I was this hyped up to hear ANY upcoming album in any genre.

Day 588 - that dog - Never Say Never
For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.
DAY 588 that dog - Never Say Never From "Retreat From the Sun"

Like yesterday's choice, this CD was a very inexpensive find from the local comic book shop. I recognized the band name because I saw the video for 'Old Timer' on Beavis and Butthead long ago.
I liked the songs on 'Retreat From the Sun' so much that I went back the next day in the hopes of finding other CDs by the band. Thankfully, I ran across a copy of 'Totally Crushed Out!' so now I only need to track down the self-titled debut if I want to collect all three of the albums they made before breaking up in September of 1997.
It was also a pleasant surprise to learn that Petra Haden was part of the band. I had heard of Petra because of thesixtyone.com, where I was introduced to her brilliant cover of 'God Only Knows'.
Anna Waronker wrote all of the songs on 'Retreat From the Sun', and my research indicates that she had originally intended to record the songs as a solo album.

Day 587 - Babe the Blue Ox - Stand By Your Man
For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.
DAY 587 Babe the Blue Ox - Stand By Your Man From "People"

A local comic book shop is getting rid of their remaining inventory of CDs. At the price of two for a dollar, it becomes worthwhile to go ahead and pick out choices that merely SEEM interesting.
By my logic, a band is probably pretty cool if they choose to name themselves after Paul Bunyan's equally gigantic companion. In this case, I was right. I popped 'People' into my CD player and my smile continued to widen as 'Can't Stand Up' filled the room.

Day 586 - De La Soul - Dinninit
For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.
DAY 586 De La Soul - Dinninit From "Stakes is High"

Haven't felt like updating this blog recently, but this track but a big smile on my face this morning on the way to work. I love the way that Pos and Dove effortlessly trade lines on the chorus. Try it yourself, and you'll probably find that it's not as easy as it sounds.

Day 585 - Julian Lennon - Too Late for Goodbyes
For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.
DAY 585 Julian Lennon - Too Late For Goodbyes From "Valotte"

I was in 5th grade when this song was all over the radio. I vaguely remember going roller skating with classmates, and I became energized when this song came on. I played 'air harmonica', and promptly fell on my ass.
Yet, I still love this song.
At different points in my life I have had my voice compared to Sean, Julian and finally John Lennon. I took each comparison as a very big compliment.

Day 584 - Bad Religion - 21st Century Digital Boy
For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.
DAY 584 Bad Religion - 21st Century Digital Boy From "Stranger Than Fiction"

'Cause Im a 21st century digital boy, I dont know how to live but Ive got a lot of toys, My daddys a lazy middle class intellectual, My mommys on valium, so ineffectual, Aint life a mystery?
Hot showers and air conditioning. Those are the two luxuries I found myself being thankful for this morning. Sure, I could probably live without them, but would I want to? No.
I bought 'Stranger Than Fiction' because of 21st Century Digital Boy and 'Infected'. It took a while for me to warm up to the rest of the album, because I wasn't expecting the faster tempos. Later I came to realize that my outlook had been backwards. The two songs that made me pay attention to Bad Religion were the songs that were a drastic change from their other material, instead of the other way around.

Day 583 - Heavy D. and the Boyz - Gyrlz, They Love Me
For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.
DAY 583 Heavy D. and the Boyz - Gyrlz, They Love Me From "Big Tyme"

Heavy D is the self proclaimed 'Overweight Lover'. According to Wii Fit and the BMI that registered during my 'body test' today, I can officially call myself overweight too.
I am right on the border of 'Normal' and 'Overweight' according to the Body Mass Index with my height measuring 6'1", and weighing in at just under 190 pounds. I crossed the threshold into the latter territory for the first time today.
I have read that you can't fully trust the BMI, because muscle weighs more than fat, but let's be real here: I'm no bodybuilder. No, this is a sign of age catching up to me a bit. I used to have a high metabolism, and I could eat just about anything without gaining a pound. That's no longer the case, and it hasn't been for a while now. I've already been noticing that I can't fit into some of the pants that used to be loose on me.
Of course, it doesn't help that I have a sit-down job, and I don't exactly go out of my way to exercise often. So, I suppose I am going to need to watch my diet a little better, and set aside more time for exercise if I don't want to delve further into the realm of 'overweight'.

Day 582 - Simon and Garfunkel - My Little Town
For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.
DAY 582 Simon and Garfunkel - My Little Town From "The Best of Simon & Garfunkel"

It was bad enough to be cut from 40 hours a week down to 32 hours, but now my employer has cut all part-timers to a maximum of 31 and 3/4 hours a week. I have informed my boss that I am going to be looking for a better primary job, and he understands. It's a corporate thing. The idea of going back to filling out job applications and submitting resumes irritates me to no end, but what can you do?
Sometimes the answer is going out and making senseless little purchases to make yourself feel better. As of last night, I am the proud owner of a very reasonably priced DVD box set of Saturday Night Live's first season. I have only watched the first two episodes thus far, but I am already enjoying it immensely.
The second episode was hosted by Paul Simon, and it's the strangest episode of SNL that I have ever seen, because the format was very different from what the show has evolved into. Musical performances dominated that particular episode. There's a few Paul Simon solo songs, a Randy Newman performance, a couple of songs by Phoebe Snow and even an Art Garfunkel solo performance.
For me the highlight was seeing Paul Simon sharing a stage with Art Garfunkel for what had been the first time in over 3 years at that time. I learned something unique about 'My Little Town' today. The song was originally released on two different albums! You can find it on Paul Simon's 'Still Crazy After All These Years' and on Art Garfunkel's 'Breakaway'.
I'm glad that they performed the song on the show, because I might have forgotten all about it. See, I bought a box set of the 'complete recordings of Simon and Garfunkel' semi-recently but this song was not included, because it technically wasn't recorded until after their 5 albums were released by Columbia. I guess it wasn't quite so complete after all. Lame. Great song 'though. Especially that epic chorus.

Day 581 - Public Image Ltd. - Rise
For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.
DAY 581 Public Image Ltd. - Rise From "Compact Disc"

It's been a while, but I'm back for now.
This song showed up on random play on my iPod recently, and it keeps popping back into my head. Blame the winning combination of the driving beat, the cool interplay between the guitar and bass, and the way the vocal effortlessly switches gears between melodic and snarky.
It has been said that John Lydon wrote 'Rise' about the issue of apartheid in Africa.
