Congo

This entry will combine Hip Hop from both the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo. The Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire, has its capital in Kinshasa and borders Zambia, Angola, the Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania. The Republic of Congo has its capital in Brazzaville and borders the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, the Gulf of Guinea, Gabon, Cameroon, and Central African Republic.

Rumba is the major musical genre in Congo. Hip Hop music is gaining in popularity among the youth in Congo and usually features a hybrid feel with genres such as Rumba, Soukous, and Kwassa Kwassa. There are reports of over 100 Hip Hop crews in Kinshasa alone, though they have received little international attention, yet.

Kaysha (Myspace page, Wikipedia), born in Kinshasa and raised in France, has a soft sound and his lyrics are often about a love interest. On the song "Dream Team," Kaysha claims, "This style is identical to none," and he's right. Bisso Na Bisso (Wikipedia, bio), a super group from both Congos, also mix the genres mentioned above with Hip Hop and rap in French. Passi (Myspace page, Wikipedia) has been a member of the French group Mistere Amer as well as Bisso Na Bisso. Fatima CIA were an important early group.

Kin Mafia Style (Myspace page) are a collective from Kinshasa, who have a more hardcore straight-up Hip Hop style. Don Klemente is an artist who now resides in Belgium. Lopango Yaba Nka or Lopango Ya Banka (Myspace page, Wikipedia) are a group of eight born in Kinshasa. Here is their video: Telema mpo na Kongo. Profetzion is another artist from Kinshasa.

Cote d'Ivoire

Cote d'Ivoire, formerly known as the Ivory Coast, in located in west Africa and borders Liberia, Guinea, Mali, Burkino Faso, Ghana, and the Gulf of Guinea. The capital city of Cote d'Ivoire is Abidjan and French is the official language.

Ivoirian Hip Hop sometimes fuses local Zouglou. Another style of Ivoirian Hip Hop is called Rap Dogba, whcih is influenced by Gansta rap.

Stezo is the center of influential group Flotte Imperial Posse. DJ Jacob is also a member. MC Claver is another member of Flotte Imperial Posse and has appeared with the famed Sengal group, Positive Black Soul. Flotte Imperial Posse has beefed with Ministere Authentik, which is led by Almighty. M.A.M. is a Hip Hop group of youngsters. Negromuffin is a pan-African, reggae-influenced group. Marc Lenoir (Myspace page) of Ivoir Sound System now resides in Rennes, France. R.A.S. fuses zouglou and Hip Hop. Angelo dropped his first album in 1990. Madeka is another group.

Colombia

Colombia is a South American country surrounded by Ecuador, Peru, the Pacific Ocean, Panama, Venezuala, and Brazil. Hip Hop in Colombia deals with the continuous guerilla warfare plaguing the nation.

Asilo 38 (Myspace page) live n California, United States, but are a group originally from Bogota, Colombia. They rap in English and Spanish. La Etnnia (Myspace page) are from Bogota and rap in Spanish. Gotas de Rap (Myspace page) are a group of five members. Kaiser E.N. (downloads) is also from Bogota.

The group Tres Coronas (Myspace page) lives in Queens, New York and rep Colombia in addition to other locations.

China

China is a large country in Asia bordering Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia, North Korea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea. Hip Hip in China continues to gain popularity. Hip Hop began in China in the the autonomous areas of Taiwan and Hong Kong.

L.A. Boys (Wikipedia) were raised in Los Angeles, California in the United States, represent Taiwan. They are credited with making Hip Hop popular in Taiwan. MC Hotdog (Myspace page, Wikipedia), from Taiwan, is one of the most popular emcess within the political boundaries of China. Here is one of his videos. He raps in a dialect of Mandarin. LMF (Wikipedia) is another popular group. DJ Tommy is one of the 10 member collective that hails from Hong Kong. LMF rap in Cantonese.

Hi-Bomb is a duo from Shanghai. Here's an article about them: Web demo launches hip-hop in China. Here are their videos for A-Yo and No. 1. Yin Ts'ang (bio) is a multinational group, featureing MC Webber from China. Chinese MC Brothers aka CMCB (Wikipedia) are another mainland group.

While breakdancing shows fill up airtime on state-run television, not every young person in China is truly familiar with Hip Hop. While on the eastern coast of China, a group of Chinese students asked me what kind of music I liked. After I answered "Hip Hop," one girl responded, "Me too, I like the Backstreet Boys." Everyone around her shook their heads in agreement. The Chinese government prevents emcees from criticizing the government on wax, so they have to rhyme about other topics. Taiwanese emcees and those from Hong Kong are allowed more lyrical freedom..

Chile

Chile is a South American country surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. Hip Hop in Chile began during the mid 1980s. At first, breakdancers brought the culture into Chile, specifically the capital, Santiago. Groups such as Panteras Negras and La Pozze Latina began rhyming in the early 1990s. It wasn't until the mid 1990s that a wave of Hip Hop swept the youth. There is a bustling undeground movement presently. Two leading groups include Sinsimil MCs (Myspace page) and Tiro de Gracia (Myspace page). Emcees rap in Spanish.

Central African Republic

Central African Republic is an African country that is surrounded by Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Chad, and Sudan. The Hip Hop community in Central African Republic is still trying to establish itself.
