Eric Benet & Abiola: His Love & Life and How to be Better After Breakups
Current mood: adventurous
Category: Music

..
Hey Loves,

Confession. For the past couple of years I was not feeling Eric Benet, and truth be told, none of my girlfriends were either. To us, he embodied the epitome of doggiedom.
(New Abiolacabulary. Doggiedom: The State of Dogging Out a Good Woman.) All I had in my head was that Halle Berry was our girl, and dammit Eric, how could you do it?? Upon deeper reflection, we weren't really angry at Eric, but angry at the men in our own lives.

FAST FORWARD. After spending an afternoon with Eric I have to tell you that we all make mistakes and he is a more thoughtful person and a fantastic musician who is intent on being a better man and an amazing single father. In the future we'll share his thoughts about "raising a queen" -- his words -- his daughter India. In this video Eric even has some dating advice, and well, what he seeks in love. This album is not about the past, but the future. One listen and you'll see why he considers Love & Life a tribute to R&B from the 60s and the 70s. For now, check out his interview, and then his new album,
Love and Life.

Special thanks to Eric for his sensual single
Chocolate Legs, which I think that ladies with all colors of legs will appreciate!! ;-) At a time when women who look like me have disappeared from movie leads, commercials, music videos and just our visual landscape in pop culture in general, we of the chocolate legs appreciate the love, Eric. Enjoy -- especially for THE TRUE EBs -- apparently the nickname for Eric Benet's dedicated fans.

xoxo,
a.

unsolicited celebrity advice: akon, you’re up!
Current mood: accomplished
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities

Hey My Loves,
My advice column in Rolling Out Urban Weekly premieres nationwide today. If you live in ATL you should have seen a blurb last week. You know Rolling Out, right? The great free lifestyles and entertainment weekly paper seen in bodegas, barber shops, cute salons and KFCs (Kennedy Fried Chickens) everywhere! Just kidding-- I am very excited, and can't wait to roll down to my corner West Indian spot to grab a copy. ALSO-- while you're grabbing that, there is a sweet article about me in Carib News, but it has many errors such as me saying Maya Angelou is my mother in my head. I love Dr. Angelou but I have a GREAT mom and I would NEVER say that. My character Maya in my novel Dare says that Maya Angelou is her godmother in her head. All good though! More on that in my blog, and there is also cool Abiola stuff in Paper Mag and Upscale on your newsstands now.

ANYWAY, shameless self promotion aside, on my blog I give Unsolicted Celebrity Advice TM, and I wanted to share this one with you:

Dear Akon,
OK, I admit, I had no idea who you were when Verizon put you on posters everywhere, and I even had a personal snafu someone mentioned you in a meeting and I said, "he looks great" but the picture was of reggae artist Wayne Wonder. I learned about you through the news because of your various mishaps with humping underage girls accidentally and stuff like that. What I will say is that your mia culpas seemed more genuine than most -- and on one occasion, I read that you even put your sorries into a hit song. Kudos!

So now it appears that you have been outed as not having done a 4+ year soul searching bid in the pokey for a wild life of crime as you originally touted but almost 3 months for an erroneous charge which was dropped. Yikes! This is crazy on so many levels. I understand that street cred is sadly an important thing in your business - unfortunately. However, to manufacture prison time to build yourself up is just sad. You have so much going for you.

You are talented-- and how beautiful is it that you are repping the motherland Africa-- can't we let that speak for itself? Instead your songs and albums have names like Konvicted and Locked Up. One of my films has a character who is a rapper called Criminal -- Criminal is a Yale educated dude who pretends that he was doing a 4 year bid while he was in college. Hmmmm.

I am prescribing a course of immediate self evaluation. Stop, drop and roll. Meditate on this and get back to me.

xo,
a.
