WWE News

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer wants to get in the WWE ring

By Kara A. Medalis
Written: March 9, 2007

WWE.com recently got in touch with Grandmaster Mele Mel after hearing that the rapper aspires to get in the WWE ring. The legendary, 45-year-old musician will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five Monday. The first rapper to ever call himself "MC" has been training hard and said he's ready for sports-entertainment fame.

"I'd make a good WWE Superstar because I am a hip hop icon and a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. I'm the world's greatest trash talker," he told WWE.com.

Mele Mel trained at Deep South Wrestling, where he said he learned "it's better to brawl than fall." While John Cena, Bobby Lashley and Ric Flair are his favorite WWE Superstars, it's Shawn Michaels he'd like to get in the ring with.

"He will look good being pinned by a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer," he said.

Mele Mel also said he could have taken both Cena and Kevin Federline during their match earlier this year on Raw.

"I can rap better than John Cena. He will be in shock to be close to someone he idolizes,
he said. "Kevin Federline is a wannabe. You might as well say I won already!"

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer recently released an album called Muscles. The album's first single and music video is M3 – The New Message.

"I am hip hop's most muscular rapper, who coined the word 'MC,' " he said.

"WWE fans, get ready for Grandmaster Mele Mel, aka Muscle Simmons and the Gun Show. Click Click Bang!"

NEWS - M3 World Premiere at Okayplayer.com

NEWS - Okayplayer "M3 - The New Message" music video world premiere

Taken from Okayplayer.com, this is their announcement of the World Premiere of the Grandmaster Mele Mel music video "M3 - The New Message".  The music video was produced by C.S. Vernon & Jimmy Lee for APE Films and directed by Jimmy Lee.

Friday January 26

"Don't take your shirt off around Mele Mel"

^^^ What he said. (I ain't standing next to anyone who looks like an action figure).

We've got a special treat for you today (for those who didn't check it yesterday). The exclusive new video from Mele Mel (with the extended OKP shoutout on the front end), and this classic interview footage (thanks playSERIOUS for the find, YouTube, and the entire Internet family). And while you're on the new isht vibe, make sure you don't sleep on HOWARD LLOYD!! We're loving The Quickie EP, so listen up!

We've also got clips of The Roots and Jay-Z at the Lincoln Center, and 10 things you didn't know about Talib Kweli (make that 13, if you count the guests on Ear Drum which include Jean Grae, Norah Jones, and Justin "And that's the way you do it, well, well, welllllll" Timberlake.

OKP Question of the Day: If Isaiah Washington is going to a treatment center, where are these nuts going? (Back to the Piggly Wiggly for more Keystones. Exactly).

PSA's: First, don't forget about the Jill Scott listening party, tomorrow in Philly. Second, critical dialogue can and will make a difference in hip-hop. Byron Hurt's documentary
(f/ M1, Mos Def, Kweli, and many others), airing on PBS in February, is a perfect vehicle. I saw it last night (shout out to Hip Hop Speaks); you NEED to put this in your books for Feb. Finally, there's never enough of this in the world.

PS - "Write a scroll..."

Thursday January 25

We know, everything moves so fast, its hard to keep up. That's why we're here! So, for those of you sleeping on our NHT section... Stop! Danny!, of former NHT fame, just inked a deal with Def Jux and MtvU (college MTV) after winning thier open call contest. Danny will receive a digital EP deal and also an appearance by OkayArtist Mr. Lif on his single and in his vid! (*sniff, we love success stories!) Which brings me to my girl... yep, I have to shout out Serena Williams who is edging for a comeback down under at the Australian Open (girl looks good!).

And if ya aren't teary eyed enough as it is, hip-hop LEGEND Mele Mel is set for his big comeback too, releasing his first ever solo album next week, and OKP's got the EXCLUSIVE!

Listen to his first single M3 The New Message and watch the world premier of his video, only on Okayplayer (uh, um, yeah and YouTube). MUSCLES, large as ever, is gearing up to make a serious impact, not only in your ear buds but in the wrestling ring as well. Yup, Mel decided to put all that iron-pumping to use! Wonder what his WWE outfit will look like.

Tuesday January 23

Mele Mel nipple slip.*

Today's update photo is extremely fitting (like the shirt... EDIT: camouflage vest), in light of Mele Mel's recently revealed Pro Wrestling aspirations. (Great suggestion for a finishing move, eclipse. Sounds like "Click, click, BANG!" will be the interview tag line).

PS - *Guess who that is on the right. Hints here. (Not sure who that is in the middle. It ain't Monie).

"A Message to Muscles"

Congrats on the Hall of Fame Induction. It means so much to have gotten this news after spending the last year with you popping up here to share your wisdom on hiphop and the state of things. What I'm hoping you realize is that this is a beautiful opportunity for you to speak your mind. Even more to represent an honest voice for hiphop. I really hope you take advantage of it to share with the world some of the thoughts you've shared here. How powerful would it be for the first hiphop inductee in the hall of fame during their induction to speak out on the self destructive exploitation that has raped our culture. Everyone knows you're supposed to just smile and be greatful at these types of things, but that's not hiphop man. Hiphop is not a museum culture. It is a living culture, and I can't speak for everyone but you can really breathe some life into by what you say on that day. I don't want to put the pressure on you or anything like that. You are not obliged to do anything I say, but I did want to share my thoughts in hopes that you might consider it.

Regardless, congratulations fam. And thank you for all you have done in support of hiphop culture.

"A Message to Okayplayer"
Thu Jan-25-07 04:09 AM by MUSCLES

As of January 7th, 2007, Hip-Hop was dead, buried, decomposed, rotted and stinking. And, throughout the demise of the once mighty culture called Hip-Hop, just about everybody went with the status quo. You could hear them say "those guys are old school, their music's played out. That shit happened back in the day. The game has changed".

Money took precedent over talent. Subculture dominated the culture. The industry and everybody in it sold their souls. On January 7th, if somebody asked you about Grandmaster Flash, most people would say fuck 'em. What about the Furious Five? "Fuck 'em". What about Mele Mel? "Definitely fuck him, and tell that old mutha fucker to keep his shirt on. Respect, respect".

Then came January 8th, 2007, and the announcement that Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five were the first Hip-Hop group to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. And, all of the sudden… there's a pulse. Hip-Hop is starting to breath again. There is life, where twenty-four hours before there was "fuck 'em. Respect, respect".

What about Grandmaster Flash? Greatest DJ ever. What about The Furious Five? The greatest group ever. What about Mele Mel? The original G.O.A.T.. And guess what? All of the sudden, he's cute!!! What a difference a day makes. I guess in the end, we the Hip-Hop Nation are truly blessed. Because, the sad truth is, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame gave new life to the part of Hip-Hop that the industry doesn't give a fuck about.

Now the pride is back. The true believers have something to look forward to. Suddenly, there is a "Rappers Royalty". Where Run-DMC will be next. We can look forward LL Cool J, Biggie & Pac, Eric B. & Rakim, even Jay-Z being in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as the "Royal Family of Hip-Hop". Whereas on January 7th, we were just a bunch of old niggaz. Damn, white people sure know how to throw a party.

Hip-Hop is a culture of Rappers & Dancers, DJ's & Artists, B-Boys & B-Girls, Cutters, Scratchers, Spinners, Spitters, Taggers and Fans. Millions of True Fans who consider our induction the greatest thing that ever happened to Hip-Hop. And, with our induction, we all made it to the Hall of Fame! And, on that night, I will make sure that Hip-Hop remains a fixture along side all other popular music, FOREVER.

Elvis and Mele Mel have left the building.
