Project Enterprise (PE) was started in 1996 by Nick Schatzki and Debra Franklin as the only Grameen-style provider of micro-business loans in New York City. It does not require prior business experience, credit history or collateral to provide market-rate financing for small businesses. Inspired by the success of Grameen Bank, PE's mission is to support and develop entrepreneurs and small businesses in under-resourced communities around New York City by providing access to business loans, business development services and networking opportunities. Since disbursing its first loan in 1997, PE has made more than 400 loans totaling more than $800,000 and provided more than 1,400 low-income and minority entrepreneurs with business training.

Entrepreneurs at PE participate in business training activities such as basic bookkeeping, tax issues and marketing strategies at biweekly member meetings, quarterly networking events and workshops. Entrepreneurs are provided unique opportunities to develop important business networks at regular borrower meetings, networking events and workshops. Group discount opportunities and internships at retail locations are other benefits provided to members. Participation in these activities helps develop leadership skills among its entrepreneurs.

Project Enterprise, a Community Development Financial Institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Treasury, has steadily grown since 1997 when it loaned just $3,090; in 2005, PE loaned $177,520. Today, PE operates across four boroughs of New York City in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Upper Manhattan (Harlem) and Queens. It provides services in both English and Spanish. Moreover, under the strong leadership of its executive director Arva Rice, PE's breadth of services has expanded greatly over the past three years, offering more in-depth workshops, access to new marketplaces and networking opportunities.

Executive Health: Part II

Preventing a heart attack

By Denise Campbell

September 23, 2007--Internationally renowned cardiologist Christopher J.W.B. Leggett, director of cardiology for Medical Associates of North Georgia in Canton, Georgia suggests individuals concentrate on risk management and understanding how certain conditions impact health. "For instance, 80% of diabetics die of heart attacks; and obesity is the No. 1 cause of type 2 diabetes in our country. "If you've got any of those risk factors, you need to be vigilant about controlling each of the problems independently," insists Leggett. "That's what will lower your risk."

Know the signs
The body sends a number of signals to let you know it's in trouble. One of the most common symptoms of heart disease is a transient ischemic attack, or mini-stroke. "This occurs when the blood vessels in the brain develop an ulcer caused by high cholesterol. Plaque forms around the crater, which eventually breaks off and makes its way through the bloodstream toward the brain," explains Donna Mendes, M.D., chief of vascular surgery at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City, clinical professor of surgery at the College of Physicians & Surgeons, and the first African American female to become board certified in the specialty of peripheral vascular surgery. "The impacted portion of the brain will suddenly experience decreased blood flow, resulting in a TIA." The part of the body controlled by that portion of the brain becomes impaired, lasting from a few minutes to 24 hours. Other indicators include loss of sensation on one side of the body; loss of vision or motor function; or intermittent pain in the calf after walking; the pain results from decreased oxygen and blood flow.

In the case of an impending heart attack, women present much milder and wider symptoms than men. These symptoms are often missed, misdiagnosed, or undertreated by both primary physicians and cardiologists. According to Patrice Desvigne-Nickens, M.D., head of the Cardiovascular Medicine Scientific Research Group at the Bethesda, Maryland-based National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, symptoms include fatigue; shortness of breath; feelings of indigestion and ill health; palpitations; neck, shoulder, and upper back pain; nausea; vomiting; sweating; and lightheadedness.

After weeks of persistent breathlessness and a vague sense of physical unease, Joan Connell, then 42, an accounting professional at Ziff Davis Publishing, went to the emergency room convinced she was having a heart attack. Despite being an overweight smoker who had been physically inactive for years, she was sent home. A week later she returned and was rushed into emergency bypass surgery that revealed four blocked arteries.

Symptoms in men include angina (chest pain), pressure or discomfort in the chest, or a tingling sensation in the arm or on one side of the body. Women, however, experience a broader constellation of symptoms over a prolonged period of time.

Overall, it is becoming increasingly important for individuals to take full ownership of their health: learning, reading, and researching information that will preserve their health, urges Leggett, "so that you can identify somebody who is incompetent taking care of you. Because [many] don't know the parameters of their conditions," Leggett offers, "they don't know that when someone says 'Go home, you're fine' to say 'I've read that diabetics can feel like this,' or 'Why don't you have a cardiologist [look at me]?'"

He laments that many of us are so consumed with pursuing economic and career goals that we too often neglect our health in the process. "Our ability to generate [wealth] is largely dependent on the preservation of our physical existence," he stresses. "You have to have quality physical examinations, know your history, and you have to identify high-caliber physicians around the country. Your health is important enough for you to find out where these people are," Leggett asserts. "You've got men who will drive 100 miles to play golf, but they don't want to drive 10 miles to see a good doctor."

The Interactive Advertising Bureau Launches Digital Video In-Stream Ad Format Guidelines

New York (May 6, 2008) - The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) today announced the release of "Digital Video In-Stream Ad Format Guidelines." Created by the IAB's Digital Video Committee, a group comprised of 145 leading interactive companies, they are the definitive format guidelines that directly address digital video advertising.

The guidelines focus on the most widely used current in-stream ad products, including linear video ads, non-linear video ads and companion ads. They were created in order to meet the following marketplace needs:

Simplifying digital video ad buying across multiple sites through minimum common ad specifications for video, overlay and companion ads.
Achieving more efficient operations through a common set of creative submission guidelines.
Increasing consumer understanding of ad interactions and environments through best practice recommendations for creative development and player environments.
"The interest surrounding digital video is no surprise," said Randall Rothenberg, president and CEO of the IAB. "Consumers have been swift to embrace the digital video experience online, and marketers have incorporated it just as rapidly into their advertising plans. With the creation and adoption of these formats and guidelines, we see no end in sight to its potential for growth."

The document is part of the IAB's ongoing effort to improve marketplace understanding of the role of digital media in the marketing and media ecosystem.

"These guidelines respond to the very real market need of simplification and standardization that will continue to propel the explosive growth of online digital video," said Mike Hurt, director, Industry Development of Microsoft and Co-Chair of the IAB's Digital Video Committee. "I am proud to have worked with a team of industry leaders on the IAB Digital Video Committee who together have brought this important industry initiative to fruition."

"We believe that advertisers should focus on delivering great creative and compelling messaging - not be deterred by having to figure out which video ad format they should use," said Michael Walrath, senior vice president of Advertising Marketplaces, Yahoo!. "Yahoo! is thrilled to have participated in the development of the IAB's standards, which will play a critical role in driving the industry forward. Not only will this make it easier for advertisers to get their video creative online, it will also provide a better experience for users."

To date, 44 companies are already compliant with the guidelines. For a complete list of those companies please go to: www.iab.net/dv_compliance.

IAB Launches Digital Video Ad Format Compliance Seal
Simultaneous with the release of the guidelines, the IAB launched today a compliance program for web publishers who adhere to the Digital Video In-Stream Ad Format Guidelines. Interactive publishers will display an IAB Compliance Seal on their websites and will in turn be listed on the IAB website.

About the IAB's Digital Video Committee
The Digital Video Committee of the IAB is comprised of 145 member companies actively engaged in the creation and execution of digital video advertising. One of the goals of the committee is to implement a comprehensive set of guidelines, measurement, and creative options for interactive video advertising. The committee works to educate marketers and agencies on the strength of digital video as a marketing vehicle.

About the IAB
Founded in 1996, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (www.iab.net) represents over 375 leading interactive companies that actively engage in and support the sale of interactive advertising. IAB members are responsible for selling over 86% of online advertising in the United States. On behalf of its members, the IAB is dedicated to the continuing growth of the interactive advertising marketplace, of interactive's share of total marketing spend, and of its members' share of total marketing spend. The IAB evaluates and recommends standards and practices, fields interactive effectiveness research, and educates marketers, agencies, and media companies, as well as the wider business community, about the value of interactive advertising.

The M. L. Wilson Boys & Girls Club of Harlem cordially invites you to attend an Open House on October 18, 2007, at 6:00 pm at Adam Clayton Powell School (P.S. 153), 1750 Amsterdam Avenue (between 146th and 147th Streets). The purpose of the Open House is to share our vision for the new Boys & Girls Club of Harlem we plan to build on our site at the Old P.S. 186.

The children of Harlem and surrounding communities are in need of a state-of-the-art Boys and Girls Club facility where they can enjoy new opportunities, learn new skills, and interact with caring adults and peers as they grow into responsible citizens. We envision a facility in Harlem that is unmatched in its technological advancements, program offerings, and architectural design and which demonstrates our commitment to our community's children. Our goal is to build a facility that can accommodate services for 2000 children and youth annually . It will take our combined efforts to achieve this goal.

The ML Wilson Boys & Girls Club of Harlem (BGCH) has responded to the high demand for its services by providing children and youth programs and services at various sites. We currently provide programming services at Frederick Douglas Academy; Public School 153; Salem Community Center; and will shortly begin to provide services at the Manhattanville Community Center. Although several hundred children are members of the BGCH, it is clear that many more lives would be touched if we had adequate facilities.

We are very aware of your commitment to the education and welfare of our children and youth. We welcome your advice and input as we move forward with plans to provide a new home for the Boys & Girls Club of Harlem that will address the needs of our children for generations to come. We sincerely hope that your office will be represented at this important forum.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at (212)283-6770; or via email at Harlembgcnyc@aol.com

Yours truly,
Eugene Campbell, Executive Director

5:04 PM - School Guards Break Child’s Arm And Arrest Her For Dropping Cake

School Guards Break Child's Arm And Arrest Her For Dropping Cake

Pandemic of police and security violence continues unabated
Steve Watson
Infowars.net
Friday, Sept 28, 2007

UPDATE: High School Secuity Guards Attack Teen With Camera Then Frame Him School security guards in Palmdale, CA have been caught on camera assaulting a 16-year-old girl and breaking her arm after she spilled some cake during lunch and left some crumbs on the floor after cleaning it up.

The incident occurred last week at Knight High School in Palmdale and was caught on a cell phone camera by another pupil who was then also assaulted by the security guards.
The girl, Pleajhai Mervin, told Fox News LA that she was bumped while queuing for lunch and dropped the cake. After being ordered to clean it up and then re-clean the spot three times, she attempted to leave the area out of embarrassment but was jumped on by security who forced her onto a table, breaking her wrist in the process.

Pleajhai also says that the security guard in the picture yelled "hold still nappy-head" at her, which at the time she did not know was a racist comment.

In an even more shocking development the security guards later had the mother of the girl arrested after she sought out an attorney and demanded that the guard be arrested, telling her that if she wanted the guard detained then she herself would also be charged with battery after she allegedly pushed the guard and an assistant principal of the school. She has also been suspended from her job at another school in the county.
The school expelled Pleajhai for five days before then having her arrested for battery and for littering (the dropping of the cake). Then they had the pupil who captured the video arrested along with his sister who was merely present at the scene.

A walkout is planned for this morning by some students, after which the protesters will call for the firing of the main security guard involved.

The incident serves as another unbelievable case in the wave of police brutality sweeping the country. In recent days we have covered multiple incidents of this nature and have compiled them into a page which will no doubt be added to in the months to come.

Commentators have linked the increased cases of brutality with a post 9/11 mentality in America where civil liberties have been totally diminished and the anointed "authorities" simply consider themselves above the law.

Former Reagan government official Paul Craig Roberts, for instance, has succinctly described the mentality as having turned "an epidemic of US police brutality into a pandemic".
The media reports linked above clearly sympathize with the girl and her mother but only because the girl "fully complied with the guards' orders".

What on earth have things come to when children are being physically assaulted and arrested in schools by huge fat thugs 5 times their size for "not complying with orders"?
Police and security officials are being trained that it's OK to beat, torture and taser anyone should they not answer their questions or comply with their every order.

The "security" and well being of citizens is no longer the concern of these moronic hired beefbrains who revel in their false positions of power. Ask yourself, why is the security guy pictured above wearing shades indoors? Because it is part of the gang mentality of these idiots who think its cool to put the fear of life into small kids and then break their bones if they fail to cower like mice when picked upon.
