My son is born!!!
Current mood: ecstatic
Category: Life
My son was born this past week. He is the most amazing and beautiful thing I have ever laid eyes on. Being a natural cynic, it's been so surprising to see how quickly all of that evaporated when I saw him, smelled him and held him.

1/4/08 Gyroscope with Jon Kranz Playlist
Current mood: apathetic
Category: Music
1/4/08 Gyroscope with Jon Kranz Playlist1000 Cobblestone Jazz - What You Want - 23 Seconds - 2007 !K7 Wild Sweet Orange - Wrestle With God - Whale EP - 2007 Nervous Blood/Tao ~~~~~~~~~~~ Passing Judgement: There's a cute scene between Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton in the movie, "Something's Gotta Give". Keaton plays a successful 50-ish divorced playwright, while Nicholson is a 60-ish tycoon with a lothario reputation, who happens to be dating her daughter. Nicholson is forced to spend a few nights at Keaton's lavish weekend home, recovering from a mild cardiac episode.
He and Keaton start off loathing each other, but cool off sufficiently to have a flirtatious discussion late one evening in Keaton's kitchen, while she prepares a midnight snack. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Q: SOT - Try Not to Rate My Answer... ~~~~~~~~~~~ I know it's only a romantic comedy...but the scene rings true. Even in the most gentle, intimate moments, when people are offering their most acute and helpful snapshots of ourselves, we can't help passing judgement. We can't help ranking what they tell us. Lining it up as more pleasing or insightful than what we expected them to say...or what we think ourselves. Or what we have heard from others on the same subject.
There's nothing wrong with offering an opinion in the normal give and take of business disucussions. You want people to agree or disagree freely. But it's not appropriate to pass judgement when we specificaly ask people to voice their opinions about us. In those moments, when other people have passed judgement on advice they have solicited from me, my first thought is, "who died and made YOU the critic in-chief?" ~~~~~~~~~~~ The Wombats - Little Miss Pipedream - The Wombats - 2007 WEA/14th Floor ~~~~~~~~~~~ 1015 This is true even if you ask a question and agree wiht the answer. Conscientiously or not, the other person will register your agreement and he or she will remember it with great specificity when you DON'T agree the next time. The contrast is telling.
The person thinks, "What was wrong with what I said? Why did I bother?" ~~~~~~~~~~~ Enigma - Why - le roi est mort vive le roi (The king is dead long live the king) - 1996 Virgin The Raincoats - You Ask Why - Looking in the Shadows - 1996 DGC Rachel Yamagata - Reason Why - Happenstance - 2004 RCA ~~~~~~~~~~~ 1030 Tegan & Sara - Fix You Up - So Jealous - 2004 Sanctuary Beatles - Think for Yourself - Rubber Soul - 1965 Capitol Indigo Girls - Run - Despite Our Differences - 2006 Hollywood Bee Gees - Run to Me - Their Greatest Hits: The Record - 2001 Reprise Supergrass - Run - Life on Other Planets - 2003 Def Jam Snow Patrol - Run - Final Straw - 2003 A&M ~~~~~~~~~~~ 1055 Spearhead - Runfayalife - Home - 1994 Capitol ~~~~~~~~~~~ 1100 American Music Club - Fearless - San Francisco - 1994 Reprise FC Kahuna - Fear of Guitars - Machine Says Yes - 2002 Nettwerk Robert Fripp & the League of Crafty Guitarists - A Fearful Symmetry - Live! - 1989 EG Pink Floyd - Fearless - Meddle - 1971 Capitol ~~~~~~~~~~~ 1115 Here's a question that you should clip out and tape to your bathroom mirror. It might save you some angst 15 years from now. The question is, What did you do back when interest rates were at their lowest in 50 years, crime was close to zero, great employees were looking for good jobs, computers made product development and marketing easier than ever, and there was almost no competition for good news about great ideas?
Many people will have to answer that question by saying, "I spent my time waiting, whining, worrying, and wishing." Because that's what seems to be going around these days. Fortunately, though, not everyone will have to confess to having made such a bad choice.
While your company has been waiting for the economy to rebound, Reebok has launched Travel Trainers, a very cool-looking lightweight sneaker for travelers. They are selling out in Japan -- from vending machines in airports!
While Detroit's car companies have been whining about gas prices and bad publicity for SUVs (SUVs are among their most profitable products), Honda has been busy building cars that look like SUVs but get twice the gas mileage. The Honda Pilot was so popular, it had a waiting list.
While Africa's economic plight gets a fair amount of worry, a little startup called Kickstart is actually doing something about it. The new income that its products generate accounts for 0.5% of the entire GDP of Kenya. How? It manufactures a $75 device that looks a lot like a StairMaster. But it's not for exercise. Instead, Kickstart sells the machine to subsistence farmers, who use its stair-stepping feature to irrigate their land. People who buy it can move from subsistence farming to selling the additional produce that their land yields -- and triple their annual income in the first year of using the product.
While you've been wishing for the inspiration to start something great, thousands of entrepreneurs have used the prevailing sense of uncertainty to start truly remarkable companies. Lucrative Web businesses, successful tool catalogs, fast-growing PR firms -- all have started on a shoestring, and all have been profitable ahead of schedule. The Web is dead, right? Well, try telling that to Meetup.com, a new Web site that helps organize meetings anywhere and on any topic. It has 200,000 registered users -- and counting.
Maybe you already have a clipping on your mirror that asks you what you did during the 1990s. What's your biggest regret about that decade? Do you wish that you had started, joined, invested in, or built something? Are you left wishing that you'd at least had the courage to try? In hindsight, the 1990s were the good old days. Yet so many people missed out. Why? Because it's always possible to find a reason to stay put, to skip an opportunity, or to decline an offer. And yet, in retrospect, it's hard to remember why we said no and easy to wish that we had said yes.
The thing is, we still live in a world that's filled with opportunity. In fact, we have more than an opportunity -- we have an obligation. An obligation to spend our time doing great things. To find ideas that matter and to share them. To push ourselves and the people around us to demonstrate gratitude, insight, and inspiration. To take risks and to make the world better by being amazing.
Are these crazy times? You bet they are. But so were the days when we were doing duck-and-cover air-raid drills in school, or going through the scares of Three Mile Island and Love Canal. There will always be crazy times.
So stop thinking about how crazy the times are, and start thinking about what the crazy times demand. There has never been a worse time for business as usual. Business as usual is sure to fail, sure to disappoint, sure to numb our dreams. That's why there has never been a better time for the new. Your competitors are too afraid to spend money on new productivity tools. Your bankers have no idea where they can safely invest. Your potential employees are desperately looking for something exciting, something they feel passionate about, something they can genuinely engage in and engage with.
You get to make a choice. You can remake that choice every day, in fact. It's never too late to choose optimism, to choose action, to choose excellence. The best thing is that it only takes a moment -- just one second -- to decide.
Before you finish this paragraph, you have the power to change everything that's to come. And you can do that by asking yourself (and your colleagues) the one question that every organization and every individual needs to ask today: Why not be great? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Postal Service - Such Great Heights - Give Up - 2003 Sub Pop Madvillain - Great Day - Madvillainy - 2004 Stones Throw Lou Reed - Beginning of a Great Adventure - New York - 1989 Warner Bros ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Zero 7 - Look Up - When It Falls - 2004 Elektra Noel Gallagher - Don't Look Back in Anger - The Very Best of Mtv Unplugged - 2002 Universal Ensemble, Michael McGrath & Tim Curry - Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life - Monty Python's Spamalot - 2005 Decca Simon & Garfunkel - Bookends Theme - Bookends - 1968 Columbia

Doveman is the work of Thomas Bartlett, a twenty-five year old high school AND college dropout, that has played alongside everyone from Antony & the Johnsons and The National to David Byrne and Yoko Ono, of all people. With Doveman though, Bartlett comes off somewhere between the hushed folk of Iron & Wine, the sparse tones of The One AM Radio, and the melancholy of Leonard Cohen. With My Left Hand I Raise The Dead is Bartlett's second full length album. Due out on October 9th, the album is full of introspective melodies and Bartlett's beautiful, soft-spoken voice and isn't much of a departure from his previous material. It almost sounds like the soundtrack to a film at times. In any case, With My Left Hand... is definitely an album that you should listen to alone with headphones on. What it lacks in excitement and action, it makes up for in its simple subtleties that help to underscore the fact that you don't need loud bursts of music to make a statement.
1030 Tigercity - Are You Sensation - Pretend Not to Love - 2007 Self-released Tiny Masters of Today - Hey Mr. DJ (CSS Remix) - Bang Bang Boom Cake - 2007 World's Fair Sole & The Skyrider Band - Shipwreckers - Sole & The Skyrider Band - 2007 Anticon
Music from Flagstaff, AZ 3-piece, Sole & the skyrider band.
1045 Picture the voice of old school rocker Robert Smith (of the Cure) meeting new school can't sit still for a moment Jamie T and that's a close approximation of the new New Zealander crew Cut Off Your Hands. Prepare for six tracks on their debut Shaky Hands EP of some post-punk dance fury that's insistent you don't just sit there. And if you do, go back to your Cure albums, because you have some serious emotional issues that still need to be worked out!
Cut Off Your Hands - You and I - Cut Off Your Hands - 2007 I Am Sound Records The Cure - 10:15 Saturday Night - Staring At The Sea: The Singles 1979-1985 - 1985 Elektra Band of Horses - Is There a Ghost - Cease to Begin - 2007 Sub Pop Jamie T - Pacemaker - Panic Prevention - 2007 Caroline Cut Off Your Hands - Tell Me About - Cut Off Your Hands - 2007 I Am Sound Records 1100 Foreign Born began in San Francisco during the late summer months of 2003, only to quickly relocate down south to Los Angeles. Their 3rd release and first full-length album "On the Wing Now" is perhaps my favorite new album of 2007. Somewhat of a sonic mash-up of U2, The Smiths, Jesus & Mary Chain and Echo & the Bunnymen, with maybe a dash of Kitchens of Distinction in there. (Is this suddenly sounding like a Pitchfork review or what?). Comparisons aside, the album is stellar from start to finish, with narely a weak track. If alternative radio latches onto "It Wasn't Said to Ask", "Letter of Inclusion" and/or "In the Shape," this album is going to explode. Kudos to the band for album closer "Never Wrong," a haunting rocker that would have felt right at home on the Bunnymen's "Ocean Rain."
Foreign Born - Into Your Dream - On the Wing Now - 2007 Dim Mak Records Hot Springs - Headrush - Volcano (import) - 2007 Aquarius Music Tab The Band - Secretary's Day - Pulling Out Just Enough to Win - 2007 North Street Records The Raveonettes - Dead Sound - Lust Lust Lust - 2007 Columbia Golden Animals - Do the Roar - Golden Animals EP - 2007 Happy Parts That's Golden Animals, Brooklyn's answer to the sweet, care-free vibes of California's 70's free-love rock scene (one that Devendra often tries to channel). The songs on their debut self-titled EP come across as forgotten demos from The Byrds–charming rough cuts that would probably lose their value if they were any more produced. They've shared the stage with the likes of Beach House, Akron/Family, and they've been called "the future of folk" by V Magazine. Do they really match the kind of hype they've been getting? Let your ears do the decidin'. You can actually download the whole album online for free. Go to WHRO.org and find the link on the Gyroscope web page while your there.
Most people will probably agree that there's nothing wrong with having a little passion in one's work. Most understand it as an energy that often keeps us focused, that insists on a certain attention to detail. Since their formation in 2003 the members of the Brooklyn-based band Soft, have made a point to distinguish (and simultaneously market) themselves through such patiently engrossed craftsmanship. They've released their first full-length album that took them over 2 years to produce. Here's "Higher"...
1115 Soft - Higher - Gone Faded - 2007 Silver Sleeve Booka Shade - Numbers - DJ Kicks - 2007 !K7 Mobius Band - Hallie - Heaven - 2007 Misra Records iLiKETRAiNS - The Deception - Elegies To Lessons Learnt - 2007 Beggars Banquet
That's the latest from the Leeds-based group ILIKETRAINS who play a dark, atmospheric and dirty style of Rock similar to Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds. Their deadly-serious stance may drain the emotion out of you, but they give far more than they take. Certainly a band to listen to with the lights on.
1130 Silver Seas - Imaginary Girl - High Society - 2007 Cheap Lullaby Yoav - Beautiful Lie - Charmed & Strange - 2007 Verve Forecast Tim Williams - Novel - When Work Is Done - 2007 Dovecote Nada Surf - See These Bones - Lucky - 2007 Barsuk 1145 (fill) Le Loup - We Are Gods! We Are Wolves! - The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millennium General Assembly - 2007 Hardly Art
