Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s
Current mood: crazy

Rock out to some of your favorite songs from 1980s supergroups such as Poison, the Police, Flock of Seagulls, and Quiet Riot in Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s.

The day prolific publisher Activision acquired Guitar Hero developer RedOctane, we knew we'd be seeing a whole lot more of the hard-rocking franchise that set rhythm gamers (and fret boards) on fire in late 2005. And we can't complain about the sudden appearance of the series' first offshoot, Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s, which franctically breathes life back into the decade that probably inspired the whole Guitar Hero concept in the first place. We recently had a chance to get our hands on the latest build of the game, due out solely on the PlayStation 2 in July, and found that while very little has changed since Guitar Hero II, the delightfully kitschy song selection that's on offer in this first Encore title more than justifies another Guitar Hero product hitting the shelves so soon.

We can't speak for the final game since it's not due out for a few weeks, but the version of Rocks the 80s that we've been playing seems more like an expansion pack for Guitar Hero II than a new game in its own right--but that's probably the aim of the Encore series anyway. You'll recognize returning characters and venues from the last game, since no new ones have been added. But the stuff that's in here has definitely gotten a proper '80s retrofitting. Burly axe man Axel Steel is sporting tight black jeans, a headband, and a wicked mullet, while Izzy Sparks has gone the glam route with spiked bracelets, a kerchief around his neck, and big blonde hair that would have made Farrah Fawcett blush. Heck, even the hyperkinetic animated intro movie from Guitar Hero II has been recolored in bright, '80s-style neon. At least you'll get plenty of new artwork around the menus and such that's appropriate to the period.

Mechanically, the game feels and plays just like its predecessor, with the series' standard progressive career mode, all the same cooperative and competitive two-player modes (with full bass or rhythm-guitar tracks for the second player), and the training mode that will let you practice up in slow motion on the many blazing riffs found on the set list. Neversoft may have taken over development of the Guitar Hero series for the upcoming third installment, but original game developer Harmonix is the only software house listed in the credits here (as this is probably the last project they completed for Activision before moving on to MTV's ambitious Rock Band). As such, all the note patterns, loading-screen humor, and other signature elements of the series feel just like vintage Guitar Hero.

Since everything else is more or less the same, the songs in Rocks the 80s are the real stars of the show, and the developers have assembled a pretty face-melting assortment of iconic '80s metal and glam rock, with even some bubblegum pop-rock and new wave thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately, we can only discuss the two sets of songs that have been announced so far, but even those are a pretty representative sampling of the game's overall track list.

We can't help getting especially giddy over some of the cheesiest '80s rock inclusions here, like Dio's "Holy Diver" and Ratt's "Round and Round," but then you've got stuff like "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow and absurdly coiffed new-wave sensation Flock of Seagulls with "I Ran (So Far Away)." That song and Twisted Sister's "I Wanna Rock" are also the two songs lifted directly from the master recordings that have been announced so far, but with Guitar Hero's cultural cachet increasing by the minute--not to mention the recent announcement of quite a few big-name original recordings planned for Guitar Hero III--we're hoping a few more originals sneak their way onto the list.

After the extremely high bar set by WaveGroup with the cover songs in the original game, we felt like Guitar Hero II had a few rough patches, with some not-quite-soundalike vocalists and song changes occasionally reminding you that you were indeed listening to a cover and not the original. We feel like the quality and similarity to the originals on the covers we've heard so far in Rocks the 80s are back to original form, and we couldn't help throwing up the horns and making silly rock faces once in a while when the solos kicked in on emblematic songs like Skid Row's "18 and Life" and Ratt's "Round and Round." Anybody who lived and rocked through the '80s is going to relive some happy (and probably embarrassing) moments with this one when it hits stores in July.

80s Guitar Hero golden, setlist finalized

Original recordings from Anthrax, X, Dead Kennedys, Winger, and more round out list of 30 new songs in Activision's upcoming PS2-exclusive game.

Like a syndicated weekly dance program from the decade it touts so highly, Activision's Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s is Solid Gold. Actually, the publisher today just announced that the game has "gone gold," saying development on the PlayStation 2 exclusive has finished and it should be on shelves July 24.

The publisher also released the last batch of the game's 30 songs, and as expected, Activision has secured the rights to use the original recordings of some popular songs by the original artists. The game's full setlist is reproduced below.

Guitar Hero Encore Rocks the 80s is rated T for Teen and will be the last game in the series from original developers Harmonix. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater developer Neversoft is taking over the franchise beginning with Guitar Hero III, while Harmonix is preparing rival rhythm game Rock Band. Both titles are set for release later this year for multiple platforms.

2007 Van Halen Tour Confirmed
Current mood: excited
Category: Music

2007 Van Halen Tour

The Van Halen summer tour with David Lee Roth exclusively revealed here last week has now been confirmed by the band's publicist. In a statement, the group said it would tour with David Lee Roth on vocals for the first time since 1984. Dates and cities have yet to be announced.

"I am very excited to get back to the core of what made Van Halen," guitarist Eddie Van Halen said in a statement. Van Halen's 15-year-old son Wolfgang has stepped in for original bassist Michael Anthony in the new incarnation of the group, which also features drummer Alex Van Halen.

The instrumentalists rehearsed with Roth in December to make sure the chemistry was right, and the parties then moved forward to sign a contract for 40 concerts this summer.

Van Halen last toured in 2004 with vocalist Sammy Hagar, grossing nearly $40 million, according to Billboard Boxscore. Hagar refused to collaborate further with the Van Halen brothers after the tour's completion ("I don't get along with Eddie anymore, and that's all there is to it," he told Billboard.com in August 2005), although he has consistently played live with Anthony in recent years. The warring factions may wind up meeting in public in March when Van Halen is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The summer tour is expected to be one of the most in-demand of the year, joining reunion outings from the Police and Crowded House, among others.

Rumors and Pure Speculation
-A song by Aerosmith. According to Tommy Tallarico in a post on an IGN board "Harmonix (& Guitar Hero) ROCKS!! I helped Harmonix & RedOctane to get some of my relatives music for GH II (you may know who I'm talking about)." According to Wikipedia Steven Tyler is Tommy Tallarico's cousin.
Link: http://forum.guitarherogame.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=4142&p=8

-A song by The Toadies. The Toadies "Possum Kingdom" was supposed to be in the original Guitar Hero but was bumped last second for "Cowboys From Hell". We can expect RedOctane to make up for this by putting "Possum Kingdom" or another song by The Toadies in Guitar Hero 2.
Link: http://ps2.ign.com/articles/701/701726p3.html

-A song by Voivod. The bands drummer issued the following statement in an update "In other news we were asked by the makers of the Guitar Hero Game if we would let them use a song for GH2, so after some thought we could see no wrong in having two million kids learn Piggy's riff on a Playstation!"
Link: http://www.bravewords.com/news/49769

-"Killing In The Name Of" By Rage Against The Machine. In the latest Official Playstation Magazine (Sept 06) on page 26 it talks about Raul Renteria, a QA tester who is very good at the game. "To prove this, Renteria played Rage Against the Machine's 'Killing in the Name' on Expert with his back to the screen, racking up a near perfect score."
Link: http://forum.guitarherogame.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=4142&p=4

-"The New Black" By Every Time I Die. During their performance at the Vans Warped tour Keith Buckley, vocalist for the band, stated that their song "The New Black" would be featured in Guitar Hero 2.
Link: http://ps2.ign.com/articles/716/716477p1.html

-A song by DragonForce. When a band is documented playing Guitar Hero, speculation is bound to arise. Much like Danny Carey from Tool, and The Darkness, the two guitarists for power metal band "Dragonforce" were spotted playing Guitar Hero. DragonForce is a much requested band for Guitar Hero II, and one must conclude that the thought enters the band's minds that they could possibly appear in a sequel to the game that they are playing.
Link: http://video.ugo.com/player.aspx?articleID=18924

-A song by Tenacious D. "An official list of new music tracks hasn't been released yet, but PSM was told that we shouldn't be surprised to see some Tenacious D in the game."
Link: http://forum.guitarherogame.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=3527 Original info is in PSM.

-A song by Buckethead. Last year, Marcus Henderon said the following quote: "Without going too much into detail, i'll just say this. Buckethead is very much in our plans for GH2. How? who knows... Where? you'll find out... Why? Cuz he's Buckethead. period."
Link: http://forum.guitarherogame.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=546

-A song by Descendents. Marcus Henderson, who recorded songs in both games is also on the song choice committee for Guitar Hero II, he stated in an interview that he has "been in dialogue with Bill Stevenson, their legendary drummer, and I totally want to get them in the game". So we will see what comes out of that. Descendants are an influential early Punk Rock band.
Link: http://ps2.gamespy.com/playstation-2/guitar-hero-2/703854p1.html

-A song by Tool - MTV.com stated that Tool are "in talks to be featured in the forthcoming "Guitar Hero 2" video game".
Link: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1531583/20060511/tool.jhtml
EDIT: I have confirmed with RedOctane that Tool and RedOctane have spoken regarding having a song in the game. Nothing has been decided as of 5/18/06.

-"Wasted Years" by Iron Maiden
Marcus Henderson said the following line, though, it's worded largely rhetorical: "I LOVE MAIDEN!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of my favorite bands ever. How would you guys feel about Wasted Years in GH2?"
Link: http://forum.guitarherogame.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=603

-"For Those About To Rock" by AC/DC - RedOctane issued a press release for Guitar Hero II, and the title of the release is "For Those About to Rock With Guitar Hero II, We Salute You! RedOctane Announces Fall US Tour Date" Of course, the first sentence of the title are lyrics and the name of a song by AC/DC. The song has not been confirmed, but it seems odd to make such a possible hint if it was unfounded.

-White, Green, Yellow, and Sexy Pink SG controllers were all seen at E3 2006. However, these could be custom made controllers that will never see the light of day.
