Make special Magic. Be a provider of Hope...:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Jackie Kennedy, Annette Funicello, Supremes, Priscilla Presley, Paul McCartney

These are the levels of donation-giving in support of LOVE IS IN THE HAIR's wig fund work.

Tina M. sent us a letter of thanks for her wig, provided by our wig fund.  Our liaison wig shops give each wig recipient a small Hair Theater tag explaining the fund and telling the recipient that they are our 'star today'.  Tina wrote in part, "When I read the part that said, 'You are our star today,' it made me feel special and gave me hope.  I cannot express the way I feel about this wonderful gesture of kindness from people I do not know and will probably never meet."

To date, 462 Central Ohio women and girls have received wigs and hats through our fund housed at the Columbus Foundation. (Wigs are around$350 each).  The wonderful stylists at Over My Head, Hope's Boutique, and Jan's Place carefully assist our Star Recipients through this tender process.

You can help too! Donations are always accepted (www.columbusfoundation.org). But right now you have a special opportunity to make a HUGE impact!  We are accepting donations at a variety of levels ($500-$10,000) for our upcoming fundraiser, LOVE IS IN THE HAIR, Nov. 7, 8, and 9 in conjunction with Columbus Dance Theatre(www.coldancetheatre.org).  Surprise of surprises, this year's show will be a hairy-aoke, love-in, sing-along, happening, BALLET! You read that right. A portion of the ticket proceeds will go to our wig fund.  If you would like to be one of our donors, with a totally tax deductible contribution (and adoring mentions in our publicity materials and at the shows) do contact: patwynnbrown@yahoo.com.  Our donor squad of LaFawnduh, Trixie, Norma Jean, and La Patrice will be at your service, happy to meet with you,  pronto and on point!

Your donation goes directly onto a woman's head!

HAIR IN THE NEWS

- Amy Winehouse has big hair and some big problems. Sadly at a recent concert an audience member threw something at her bouffant hairdo. Being Amy, she went into the audience to bop the perpetrator. Also being Amy, her aim was not true and she hit the wrong person.  La Patrice continues to hold out hope for this, our highest of high hair stars.

_ The height of polygamist wives' hair denotes their status in the cult.

- Cameron Diaz and Jeff Bridges have both shaved their heads for their respective movies

- In Jackson, Mich, (acc to Sports Illustrated) Emmarie Truman (sophomore at Jackson High) pitched a one hitter with 5 strikeouts and a win—She did this 3 months after brain tumor surgery and chemo. She also did it bald.

ANGELS AMONG US

Thank you ever so much to….

Pam Glasgow and Terry Oliver at OHIO HEALTH who helped with the copies for the donor info packet.

Ohio Court Reporter's Association  for their generous donation to the wig fund.

Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Warricka who also gave a donation.

Those sweet Daughters of Erin continue to support our efforts to cover heads with their kind monetary gift.

THIS WEEK reporter Jennifer Nesbitt who wrote of the wig fund in an article about the "Parenting Salon" show episode.

LISA PAQUETTE'S GRANDMOTHER

Lisa Paquette is a trainer and yoga teacher.  She recently told us that her grandmother was on a bowling team called the "Hair Pins."  Lisa said the bowlers had shirts they proudly sported with Hair Pins emblazoned across the back.

LUCY'S FINAL HAIR THOUGHTS

La Patrice attended a humor conference in Upstate New York this summer. The keynote speaker was the very entertaining and inspiring Lucie Arnaz.  Lucie gave a talk about the importance of laughter for our general well being.  She also did a session called, "Ask Lucie" where you could ask her anything about her famous parents, Lucy and Desi Arnaz.

Lucie told the story of her mother's final days. Lucy had an aneurysm and Lucie was called to the hospital. Lucille Ball was in an oxygen tent but mumbling and obviously very weak. Her daughter got very close and asked the nurse permission to lift the mask a moment to hear what her mother was saying.

Lucie lifted the mask and Lucille Ball said with great sadness, "I was supposed to have my hair colored today!"

Lucy died that night.

THE HAIRDO MONOLOGUES

Hair Theater comes in a variety of episodes. La Patrice has always wanted to orchestrate, "The Hairdo Monologues." When she read about The Groove Group in Columbus Dipatch's Joe Blundo's column she knew she had found the group who could commit.

The Groove Group (Girls Realizing Outrageous Opportunities with Variety for Everyone) is the brainchild of group leader, Sheri Widder. These wonderful women are hell bent on having adventures and a good time.

They also earn merit badges for their activities. The Groovettes committed to 5  two hour workshops and to the work of the additional work of producing The Hairdo Monologues. They wrote their own hair stories to be included. La Patrice received funding from IQ*ity (an educational software system) for her work in writing, directing, and performing  the show with the Groove Group. Mark your calendars for fall fun. Our annual fundraiser will be Nov. 7,8,9, at the Columbus Dance Theatre (Columbus, OH).  It is a hairy-aoke, love-in, sing-along, happening, BALLET!!!!! A production squad of stars is starting work on the show this June.  Donations to the fund at The Columbus Foundation at a variety of levels may be made (patwynnbrown@yahoo.com-- for info).

PEOPLE WHO ARE GUARANTEED A GREAT HERE DAY!

Some good folks don't wait for the annual fundraiser in November to help the wig fund.  Our needs are increasing and reflect the economy. We have helped over 450 women through every hospital in Columbus, via three fabulous wig shops.  Recent donors include:

The Davis Foundation- Thank you Jackie and Bill!!! [They are wonderful supporters of the fund.]

The "Chippenhair Male Dancers" at the Ohio Court Reporters Conference.  We appreciate Tracy Schiefferle's assist with this.

Angie Staten's special group of girls at Dominion Middle School, who held a hat day to help the fund. Each of the girls' in the group has a loved one who has experienced cancer.

The Hair Theater Cheer Chicks and the Erma Bombeck Humor Conference- The Cheer Chicks were the opening act for Garrison Keillor at the conference and wowed the crowd. Mr. Keillor's review: "You were good (pause, rub chin)…I'm not sure what it was you were doing (another thought filled pause and direct look with hairy eyebrows), but I liked it."  …We'll take it.

HAIR HISTORY LESSON FOR THE DAY (FROM Hair-A-Baloo: The comedy and tragedy on top of your head)

"Rosy and Maria Carita offer beauty treatments to such notables as Brigitte Bardot and Madonna. They are quoted in VANITY FAIR as saying, "There are no ugly women."  The key to loveliness, according to the Caritas, is this: Just tap into each client's individuality, and turn the key."

LETTER TO THE EDITOR/ REAL SIMPLE/ May 2008

"When I was eight, my mother decided to give me a home permanent. My hair was all rolled up when the news came on television that President Kennedy had been assassinated. My mother was so swept up in the coverage that she completely forgot about my hair until my father came home that night and asked, 'Why is Kim in curlers?'." All the hair on my head broke off at the roots except for one hardy patch down the middle--- making me the first person in town with a Mohawk.  ---Kim Wiley, Charlotte, N.C.

QUOTE FOR THE DAY:

Misadventures of the Cheer Chicks: Go Irish!

One of the many amazing aspects of the Cheer Chick troupe is their ability to put the lyrics of the old Mary Tyler Moore show into action....positive Cheer Chick action.

There is a line in her theme song that goes:  "...who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem OK."

The faces coming into the Cavello Center showed their preoccupation with the challenges of the day.  They were soon to be melted into smiles and the Cheer Chicks started that magical alchemy they let them know that, "...you're going to make it after all."

Sunday was a big day for the Daughters of Erin and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. It was the day of their annual fundraiser to help cancer good works.  The proceeds from the luncheon and chit-chat performance of La Pats (THE HIGHER THE HAIR THE CLOSER TO GOD: MY ROSARY, MY RAT TAIL COMB, AND OTHER ARTICLES OF FAITH....) went to help at the Columbus Cancer Clinic, and to buy wigs/hats through the Hair Theater Fund at the Columbus Foundation.

The Hair Theater Cheer Chicks, ambassadors for the Fund, welcomed the audience members outside at the entrance: Sub-Captain Gigi led the cheers.  Cha Cha, Starr, Roxie-Cleo, and Norma Jean rounded out the troupe and brought an impromptu show inside to "turn the world on with their charm...."

Joining the Chicks for  their world-class Synchronized Swimming Cheer was champion Irish step dancer, Ryan Driscoll, who was working the sound that day.  Ryan burned up the floor with his fast and entertaining stepping, all to the tune of "This Little Light of Mine!"  Talk about a trooper!

The Cheer Chicks agree with that MTM song: "...love IS all around."  And they are just the girls to share it with so many audiences.  "With each glance and every little movement they show it."  From Mary Tyler Moore to Gandhi, the Cheer Chicks display in their hijinks and commitment to show up that, as Gandhi advised, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."

MISADVENTURES OF THE CHEER CHICKS: Opening Act for Garrison Keillor!

Have wigs, will travel. So the Hair Theater Cheer Chicks hit the open roads (70 west) and landed in Dayton at the always fantastic Erma Bombeck Conference.

We were the opening act for Garrison Keillor and we pretty much burned down the house so things would be nice and toasty for Mr. Keillor after that long Minnesota winter.

We JUMPED into the room with our dance number and onto the stage we alighted. There were STARR, ANNETTE, ROXIE, NORMA JEAN, GIGI, FRENCHY, MADAME X, CAPTAIN GIDGET, LA FAWNDUH, and LA PATRICE in attendance.  Annette did her first "photo formation" elevated mount and was triumphant with a visage similar to St. Theresa’s during an especially rewarding prayer time.

This was a big trip and event for the Chickadees and everyone took a lot of time to prep, and travel, and get off work. We had great leadership too from Captain Gidget, Sexy Secretary Starr, and Prop and Paper Mistress Frenchy. La Pats was very happy with the level of professionalism that went into this fun gig.

Betsy Bombeck, Erma’s daughter, took her homecoming queen crowning like the majestic woman she is. Betsy is just back from a medical service mission to Africa and so she deserves her crown and scepter.

We did a chant cheer for Garrison Keillor after learning, or so he says, that the kids called him "Duke" in high school. Duke it was in his chant.

The Wannabe Cheerleaders from the audience (one was pregnant but we are talking about cheerleaders here-- don’t take this too seriously or offensively folks)-- But the wannabes did a bang up job on the FIGHT TRAIN. We were impressed.

Naturally, the CC’s synchronized swimming cheer wowed the crowd and we went off to the rousing strains of JUMP that sound tech Steve-A-Rino provided for us. We are so grateful to Tim Bete, and Abby Burns, and our little Paula who helped us so much to start the program.

We are also thankful to the audience members who made us feel like stars after Garrison Keillor’s funny and inspired story telling.  He was so affirming of Erma’s work and we liked that.

We agree with Erma who said, "When humor goes, there goes civilization."

Misadventures of the Cheer Chicks: Sunny 95 and the Outstanding Women

Starr and Captain Gidget proved to be magnets for camera men, doctors (ob/gyn), cookies, and assorted very happy passersby at the inaugural "20 Outstanding Women You Should Know" event presented by Sunny 95 radio.  The crowd (2000) far surpassed the organizers' expectations and the allure of the Cheer Chicks surprised and delighted all. Michelle Hurley, our contact, and her team did a magnificient job!!!!!!!!

The event featured 20 women who do work in our community that make the world a better place. The work of the HAIR THEATER FUND AT THE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION was honored and the Cheer Chicks set up camp under our big banner and proceeded to (as we like to think of it) dazzle the crowd with our fantastic cheers and big hearts and even bigger hair.

We were in such good company with the likes of:

Rosemarie Rosetti- Rosemarie is in a wheelchair because she became paralyzed when a huge tree fell on her.  She gives motivational speeches.
Jessica Hollins- is the director and founder of MY VERY OWN BLANKET which makes and donates blankets to foster children.

Ty Kiah Wright- helps minority and disabled students strengthen their career development skills.

Terry Swank- just returned from Iraq where she served as a physician's assistant.

We decided we were in very good company, and to celebrate our good fortune we danced to "Jump,"  cheered, and greeted our many fans (however most of them were looking for the coveted 'stamp' to complete their drawing form for an exotic trip).  But we treated them as though they were fans and we chatted up the wig/hat fund. True to form, and in the spirit of an exemplary ambassador, our Gigi was beguiling in her, yet again, new persona of diplomat's wife (circa 1963) complete with a meringue topping of hair/hat.  Gigi knows how to sell the fund and please the fashion gods.

Newbies Norma Jean and Roxie jumped right into the action and true to CC style and form, were ready for anything, including a group emergency meeting to discuss our "diplomacy and foreign relations program."  Norma Jean and Roxie have fantastic people skills that shined with our customers inquiring about the work of the fund.  These girls really know how to dive right into the CC experience and personally help make it work.

Alan, the owner of Sunny 95, came over and told us that Hillary Clinton called into Sunny 95 to congratulate them on the 20 Outstanding Women. She said she had read the bios. (She nearly came to the event)

Our fans/stamp seekers were adorable.  Diddy Daddy (Steve Brown) acted as bouncer and helped us serve our public, as he served the CCs with refreshing beverages.  We loved getting wee Hazel into the HELLO cheer line.  Kelli, who was bald/hatted, had tears in her eyes after we cheered for her (tears of joy, not pain).  A woman in a wig, who had just come from a styling following her day of radiation, was so happy to see us there in all of our goofy fineness.

We were situated next to a team of hairdressers who did fantastic hair stylings of the attendees. Most of the hairdressers were young women but they were happy to have our Girl Group music and cheering bringing more attention to our merry corner.  One of the hairdressers had the cutest Swingin Sixties hairdo with a black bubble dress, tights, and black boots. La Patrice said, "You look just like Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes!"  She answered, "Who?"

MISADVENTURES OF THE CHEER CHICKS: Our day with Miss Angie’s kindergarten class

Today we visited Miss Angie's kindergarten class. The Hair Theater Cheer Chicks received a lot of help from Gina Dennis (who is Miss Angie's friend), Mary Jeanne England (who is Gina Dennis' aunt and a friend of La Patrice) and Eileen Ryan (who is a reporter with SNP newspapers and better yet, she looks exactly like Katie Holmes!).

Mrs. Susan Donovan is the principal at Our Lady of Perpetual Help school where Miss Angie teaches kindgergarten. Since the Tiki birds are correct, and it IS a small world after all, we discovered that Mrs. Donovan went to high school with La Patrice, The Countess of Spit Curls.

Miss Angie and her very well behaved kindergarterners were humongously surprised when the Cheer Chicks came in and did their special dance cheer, JUMP! The kindergarteners helped them do this routine too. Those kids sure can jump!

Miss Angie is beautiful. Her kindergarteners asked Santa for hair for their teacher and Santa came through with a beautiful wig from Hope's Boutique.  Miss Angie loves her new hair and so do her kindergarteners, including Donovan, who sat next to Miss Angie the whole time. He loves Miss Angie and so do we. Donovan was shy with the Cheer Chicks in the beginning, but by the end, he was one of the most helpful boys and the Cheer Chicks appreciate that he decided we were OK chicks.

We learned a new word today. The new word is
ALTRUISM. It's a big word but these kindergarteners are wise beyond their years and so they learned to say it.  They already live it.

The adults who were visiting did the cheers too! Even one dad helped us and he did some really good splits!  The Cheer Chicks also saw a handsome man leaving the school as they were ready to enter Miss Angie's classroom. La Patrice complimented the man on being "good looking." Then we found out that he was the priest for the church. We learned many new things today!

One thing we already knew....Pixie Dust is powerful (and, by the by, hard to clean up.) But all of us, I mean all of us, sang Bibbity Bobbity Boo and gave Miss Angie pixie dust so she would have special magic to help her with her illness. We think it worked.

The Cheer Chicks were so happy to be there. They looked as radiant as ever.  Capt. Gidget gave a special message to Miss Angie as we crowned Miss Angie the "Queen of the Universe!"  Capt. worked so hard in helping to organize our Cheer Chicks for this event. With the Capt. were: Madame X, Cha Cha, Norma Jean, and La Patrice.  The children were amazed to find that we could actually swim in their classroom when we did our synchronized swimming number to "This Little Light of Mine," which the children knew and sang.

Santa loved that the OLPH kindergarteners asked him for something for someone else. Santa adores altruism and the hairdos on the Cheer Chicks.  So he asked Madame X to present to the class a special snowman light that maybe they can use during reading time.  It is a light to remind them that we all must turn on our love lights to help each other.

Altruism is a big word. But it doesn't take big actions to do it. Just turn on the light, and sprinkle some pixie dust! That's what we did.  And we saw magic happen.

And everyone lived, happily ever after.

The End

Misadventures of the Cheer Chicks, Spirit Squad, Band, and Glee Club at Hair Theater High
Category: Life

Hannah's Red Alert Bedside Pep Rally and Half Time Show

We probably shouldn't have stolen the piano, seeing as how we WERE at Children's Hospital and another act was coming in to entertain the kids on the main floor, but our best guess was they probably were bringing a boom box and also we needed it.

You see, a group of us went to Nationwide Children's Hospital to perform our trademark Ambush Bedside Pep Rally and Half Time show for Hannah Stull and her family.  Hannah, age 19, has a malignant brain tumor that has spread to her eye and ear. She is receiving chemo and then will have surgery.  It's never easy having a brain tumor but having one at Christmas time, and having one when you are 19 just is so so so ridiculously bad. And when things are ridiculously bad, we send in our Hair Theater Fund Players.  Our mission: Spread laughter, cover heads with our wig fund, and Raise spirits.

Mission Accomplished last night at Children's.  We must thank our angel, Cathy Kellerman from Children's Foundation who helped us set all of this up from their end. And thanks too to her assistant Allison. Both of these fine women became part of our SPIRIT SQUAD and helped with cheers. Also joining the SPIRIT SQUAD were fund supporter Anne "flashing red baubles" Valentine, and Julie "I Love Lucy" Sanford, who has been true blue to our fundraising shows.

Ya' gotta love those CHEER CHICKS who do these ambushes on a regular basis. They took their precious holiday time to help us cheer Hannah on to victory.  Cha Cha, Gigi, and Starr all brought their professionalism and talents to bear in working beside our SPIRIT SQUAD and Hannah's family (including her dad, Randy!!!!!) do our cheers around Hannah's bed. When we did "Team's in a Huddle"-- believe me when I tell you that the power and strength of everyone in the room shot through Hannah like a lightening bolt of pure hot sizzling love.  We made the chemo look like a sissy drug!

Thankfully, Starbaby Luke Cheeseman (who is now working in L.A. and played an extra in an Angelina Jolie movie--- and she played to him in a scene, so now he has to carry all of her kids around for her, or that's what I think will happen), so Starbaby taped the ambush/show and his dear mom Betsy came too because they know the Stull family.  Also working as photog was handsome Steve Diddy Daddy Brown, whom we've heard sleeps with one of the players.

It really was a family affair with the Stull family, some of our spouses, Dave Bott the key board players parents and Moretti's show regular Cathy Lanana Bott. And some kids came from their rooms for the "half time show" and they got into the act too.

I particularly enjoyed when all 20 people "jumped in the pool" to perform our "This Little Light of Mine" synchronized swimming number.  Our Rockette style ending, interruped briefly by an orderly bringing a bed through the pool, was a smashing success!

Our key board player Dave Jean-Paul Bott was really put on the show biz spot when we discovered that the house piano on our 5th floor area was actually electric and needed a certain cord, which we did not have.  Controlled panic set in.  One player remembered a piano in the main lobby of the hospital. Although Cathy K. advised strongly against stealing it, the show had to go on.  Three of our male players went to the lobby, took the piano, pushed it onto the elevator and brought it up to the 5th floor.

Then in true Laurel and Hardy fashion, Zach the nurse found a cord, and the 3 kindly thieves took the piano back to the lobby the same way it came. When the dance troupe showed up, if they needed it, it was back. This made Cathy K. sigh a very big sigh of needed relief as we were about to head to Hannah's room with too many cheerleaders, acc to head nurse, and we had to turn some of them invisible, which we did, and we all made it into the room.

Our half time show dazzled the crowd!!!! Dave was again a stellar trooper with his musical stylings and he had to join the psychic network in order to anticipate what would happen with our play list and La Patrice's patter.  Tim Murnane wrote new lyrics to his signature "Glad All Over" song which the entire crowd sang.  Skip Maurice Sanford helped us understand how courageous the three children were who were battling cancer with the lessons learned from his brother's fight with cancer. And he sang, "Venus" so beautifully that you just wanted to hop onto the dance floor/ swimming pool and slow dance. After Skip's song we crowned Hannah our goddess of love.

Obviously, the heavens weren't too angry with the Piano Heist of '07 because they sent us a celestial song bird named Kelly Crum Delaveris.  Her rendition of "Someone to Watch Over Me" would make the angels cry.  It made us cry as the Stull family held each other in comfort and love.

You need to understand this: If you want to be sure and have a good Christmas, please follow Bing's advice to Rosemary and count your blessings.  In the company of our players, family members, and honoree we had two additional very ill children from the 5th floor oncology wing.  Danielle and Edan were also rewarded with prizes and recognition and magic pixie dust from all of us.  When Kelly sang "Silent Night" and we all saw these children who would be spending the night in a hospital bed fighting a nasty devil of a disease, none of us could escape the fact that rays of hope and compassion were ricocheting around that room and filling our lives with a holy night.

If it takes stealing a piano to accomplish this noble goal, we're your troupe.

I can honestly say, I will never forget that night for the rest of my life. Thank you HAIR THEATER FUND PLAYERS for your selfless gift.
