 SPROUT, By Jeanne Stern
Handmade Puppet Dreams For Kids Handmade Puppet Dreams presents a selection of four family friendly puppet films followed by an interactive shadow puppet show and workshop. The whole family can enjoy these unique mini puppet films. Join us for the whimsy of assemblage puppets made from found paper and recycled objects. Sprout, a film by Jeanne Stern is about a kitchen sink over-flowing causing the room to flood and sprout to life. Trixie and the Treetrunks by Quintron and Miss. Pussycat, after receiving a secret message from a talking "Happy Tree", Trixie and Marsha embark on a quest to start a band. Bottle Bug Band by John Kennedy asks the audience to find out what all of the buzz is about and sing along with the Bottle Bugs, as they teach the world that every day should be Earth Day. Piano Mouths by Jeanne Stern treats us to a quick snippet of how an ordinary instrument can be turned into a puppet with eighty-eight musical mouths. Pupsock & Wendell in The Gallery of Doom by Patrick Algermissen features a puppet dog named Pupsock Jackson and his animated sidekick, Wendell. They attempt to save Princess Stacie from her kidnappers in a haunted museum. The screenings will be followed by a live puppet show of The Three Billy Goats Gruff by Alan Cook from The International Puppetry Museum. FAUST, By Steven Ritz-Barr
Handmade Puppet Dreams For Adults Stylistically, the films run the gamut from marionettes to finger puppets to paper cutouts, each artist articulating their own unique approach to animation and film. Too Loud A Solitude by Genevieve Anderson is based on the novella by Bohumil Hrabal and contains all the magic still present in the twisted streets of Old Town Prague. Too Loud a Solitude spins a tale of passion, beauty, and high moral stakes in the midst of a crumbling civilization. In Private by Jason Von Hinezmeyer about a mustached man who visits a primitive pre-film private viewing booth and gets more for his change than he bargains for. Faust by Steven Ritz-Barr and Hoku Uchiyama is a film in which Dr. Johannes Faust faces a dilemma when his bargain with Mephisto sours. All Faust wanted was more power, more glory, and more appeal to lure a young Gretchen. But in the end, in the face of his failure to love, he transcends his worldly desires to achieve immorality. This film is a visual interpretation of Goethe's Faust part one, and first in the Classics in Miniature series. The puppets from Faust will also be on display and following the screening, Steven Ritz-Barr will give a lecture focusing on The Legend of Faust including the history, its cultural hybrids, and why Puppets work with this theme.
Screening 1:30 PM Sat, Apr 26
