Murder on the Greyhound
Current mood: hungry
Category: News and Politics
There was a horrible tragedy a few days ago on a Greyhound Bus heading from Edmonton to Winnipeg, when one passenger cut up another one and beheaded him in front of other horrified passengers. It happened around Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. The immediate reaction from some people was to say, "good thing i don't ride the bus much," or "i'll never ride the bus again," or "I'll never sleep on the bus again."
I have two problems with this. One, as terrible as it was, it's an extremely rare event, it doesn't happen all the time. People don't stop flying just because planes crash, they don't stop sailing because boats sink, they don't stop driving because accidents happen. Two, those kinds of statments seem to imply that bad things only happen on buses. Is everyone forgetting the time those terrorists hijacked planes and flew them into buildings, killing everyone on board? Flying has issues of its own.
I'm not saying this will never happen again, maybe it will, and maybe it will happen to one of us. However, we can be raped, killed or beaten anywhere, at anytime. If we're going to spend our lives fearing the possibility of those things, we might as well not leave the house.
In the meantime, my thoughts go out to this boy's family and friends.

The Dark Night
Current mood: tired
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities
I went to see the Dark Night tonight and i'm not going to say it was the best movie i've ever seen, or the best movie this year. It would be overstating things, and the year isn't over yet. However, it was very good, and i did enjoy it. It was emotional, dramatic, action-packed and even had it's humourous moments.
Heath Ledger was wonderful as the joker, and i think they'll have a hard time casting the role for the next movie because i think he was even better than Jack Nicholson. The role is Heath's now, he's already the one i automatically picture when i think of the character. The next person will have big shoes to fill. He was funny, but also very intense and dark. He played psychotic to a t. There has been Oscar talk for the performance, and i don't know if he will be nominated, but he was awesome.

Order of Canada
Current mood: tired
Category: News and Politics
It could be said that one man's hero is another man's villain, and that was never more true then in the case of Dr. Henry Morgentaler. He led the fight to legalize abortion in Canada, which finally happened in 1988. He opened his first illegal abortion office in 1969 and controversy has followed him ever since. He has had offices burned down.
The latest controversy is that he has been one of the people chosen to receive the Order of Canada, our highest civilian honour. Anti-abortionists of course are outraged, they feel that choosing him sullies what the award is about. Abortion activists on the other hand are thrilled, they essentially hail him as a hero. Even as a pro-choicer myself, i don't really see him as a hero, i don't throw that word around lightly, however i don't see him as a villain either. I see him as a man who fought for what he believed in, and risked his life in order to do it.
The award recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation. Whether you agree with Dr. Morgentaler or not, i don't think you can really argue that he fits the definition. He helped to get a major law changed, that's certainly an achievement, even if you don't like the change. He fought to get abortion legalized because of his dedication to the community he was fighting for, which in turn became service to the nation because he was fighting for freedom of choice, not just for those who wanted or needed an abortion, but for everyone.
When you are fighting for the freedom to choose abortion, you are in essence fighting for the freedom to choose in other aspects of life too. It's about choosing how you live and about choosing who you are going to be. When we allow choice in one aspect, it opens the possibility of choice in all other aspects too.

Canada Day
Current mood: hot
A reporter at one of our local papers wrote an editorial about how Canada doesn't really have its own identity, there isn't really a way to describe us. In my opinion though, the fact that we don't have only one identity is our identity. The fact that we absorb both English and American culture, with a dash of our own humour and personality. The fact that Canadians come in all colors, creeds, political affiliations and sexual orientations.
To me, being Canadian means accepting who you are, who we all are, regardless of what that may be.
Happy 141st birthday Canada.

Heinz Pulls Mayo Ad
Current mood: quiet
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities
Heinz has created a commercial for mayonnaise featuring a gay male couple, one English and one from New York, and their young son and daughter. Apparently there were complaints (surprise, surprise) so they have pulled the ad. It was made for the UK and was supposed to run for five weeks, it never ran in the United States. Here is the article, and the ad:
http://money.aol.com/news/articles/_a/heinz-pulls-mayo-ad-after-complaints/20080625074509990001?icid=200100397x1204514054x1200195546
It asks at the end if people find the add funny or offensive, both or neither. My vote goes to neither. I don't find the ad particularly funny, although the chef with the New York accent calling his partner sweet cheeks did get a chuckle out of me, but i also don't find it offensive. I actually think it's kind of cute, as it would be if it was two straight people.
Gay people buy the same products straight people do, for the most part, they watch the same commercials, yet they almost never see other gay people in them. We all want entertainment and advertising we can relate to, why shouldn't there be commercials featuring gay people, they are human, just like the rest of us. Maybe if there were more gay families depicted in advertising, people would start to see it as normal and acceptable. Instead, all we get are the depictions on TV and movies, which although funny and interesting, are often stereotypical.
I understand that companies want to do what they feel is best for their consumers, and they said that it offended people on all sides of the debate, but i'm sure there are also plenty of people who weren't offended. Why are the offended people the ones who are always catered to? Why was Heinz's decision based on their input, but not on any positive input they probably got?

St. Jean Baptiste Day and Queen and Paul Rodgers
Current mood: thoughtful
The day is almost over here on the west coast, and it's already Wednesday morning in the east, so i just want to wish a belated Happy St. Jean Baptiste Day to all our French-Canadian friends. Here is a link for all those who don't know what the day represents:
http://aim.search.aol.com/search/redir?src=websearch&requestId=3bf59495b22ae428&clickedItemRank=4&userQuery=St.+Jean+Baptiste+Day&clickedItemURN=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.holidayspotplus.com%2Fholiday_int_canadian_stjean.htm&title=%3Cb%3ESt%3C%2Fb%3E.+%3Cb%3EJean%3C%2Fb%3E-%3Cb%3EBaptiste+Day%3C%2Fb%3E&moduleId=matchingsites.jsp.M&clickedItemPageRanking=4&clickedItemPage=1&clickedItemDescription=WebResults
On a completely unrelated note, my fellow Queen fans might like to know that Queen and Paul Rodgers have added another UK date to their tour, at Wembley arena on November 8 of this year. Tickets for the general public go on sale on June 28.
