the new kit
Current mood: sleepy

We recently upgraded some of the band equipment. It's made us 7 times louder than we ever were. This excites us. Watch for us on the road in JULY. Staying local for the month of June.
All the best.

down on the corner, out in the street
Current mood: busy

The boys in the band, including myself, aren't big fans of organized sports, especially baseball. Last night we headed down to POKEZ to play our semi regular Thursday night set. Turns out it was game day for the Padres and that means parking sucks. Sometimes, and only on non-game nights, we're able to park the whip in the 30min spot smack dab in front of the restaurant. And more recently when that primo spot is taken, we park across the street in the RED, but only if it's after 6pm.  Last night was one of those nights.  We were starvin' Marvins so we ate first. As we went out to start the load in, we noticed there were loads of people streaming down 10th St on their way to the stadium. So we made a quick decision to simply set up right on the SE corner of 10th and E St. In no time, we belted out a rather lenghty 4 song set. During song #2 a police cruiser drove right past us and did nothing. At another point in the show a random car was screaming encouragement to us over a loudspeaker.  All I could make out was him singing, some CCR and it goes like this, "Down on the corner, out in the street, Willy and the poor boys are playing, grab a nickel, stamp your feet."

Pokez never disappoints.

Roller Boogie Breakdown.......
Current mood: touched

The day started out normal enough. Hottubbin, work, hustlin, and then it got interesting. This hippie vegan kid and his gal accompanied me and the band to Stephanie's in OB. He'd heard about their amazing pizza and had to try it before he flies out on Sat. We arrived and ordered food. Maria was out, but Vanessa hooked it up and asked me in Spanish if we had our equipment and wanted to ROCK. That's a no brainer. Ten minutes later we were set up and blazed through a two song set. This would prove to be good practice for our gig later that night. This time we rocked the staff, my friends, and three customers. One guy even knew who AC/DC is. Minds were expanded and it was back to work for a bit. OHH did I fail to mention the food was phenomenal???

Later on in the evening we headed up to scan the situation at the roller rink. Our planned show was NOT sanctioned by the DERBY DOLLS or Skate World, so caution was exercised. It was pure sneak and attack. I was able to back the HKmobile fairly close to the foyer. After stressing about no outlets for a few minutes, we decided that the car energy converter with the extension cord would have to suffice. We laid low after surveling the land and were bummed when the downpour began. It rained for a good half hour and then let up. With the weather holding and very few attendees waiting to get in, the roadies set up the equipment at 6:30.  After getting some peculiar looks from the Skate World staff, we figured we should get, while the getting was still good. Our stage manager gave the go ahead a full five minutes ahead of schedule. We blew threw a breif set and broke down quickly. I can say that I made a solid connection with a 35y/o man who knew the words to FANTASY by my man, Aldo Nova.

So the show didn't quite live up to my expecations, but the rollerskating sure did. Monty was spinning disco tunes and the ladies were plentiful. The highlight was seeing the Dolls pummel the shit out of the very adventurous newsman. Also, witnessing the demonstration on how roller derby is waged was educational. Looking forward to the next event, ladies.

A Truly Headbangin Thursday
Current mood: bouncy

The idea hit me to play a show at STEPHANIE's BAKERY in OB earlier this week. I'd notice that the owner, Maria, was really rockin out to some David Lee Roth. I was singing along and while paying for my food, she extended her hand as a microphone so I could keep singing. That's when it hit me. It's a relaxed environment, fun loving employees, and top notch food. Perfect headbangin parameters.

So this morning the HK mobile was loaded down with all our equipment. After going into work for a while, I told my boss that we had a gig. He was casual as usual and told us to get back soon. After collecting all the members, we were blazin down I-8 and found ourselves in OB on Voltaire Street. Load in was efficient and the bakers were stunned that they had the good luck to have a rock concert come through the door. After a brief sound check and passing out some ALL ACCESS PASSES, we barged right into our version of PANAMA.  Everyone in the room was intrigued at the intricate guitar work. The ladies were shouting for more so we decided to lay into  JUKE BOX HERO for the final tune.  We didn't get a standing ovation, but the good bakers at Stephanie's were so impressed that they offered us a gig once they open for evening hours later this year. So what started as a fun lunchtime show, turned out to be an audition. EXCELLENT. The ladies made all of us pesto, salami, and cheese hoagies that were out of this world. Can't wait to play there again soon.

Fast forward to this evening and the place is the one and only POKEZ. It was a packed house and we were lucky to get the table we needed by the electrical outlet. After chowing down on some enchiladas, it was time to load in. Again, the goddess of rock was looking down on us in that we parked in the spot right outside the door. A few minutes transpired to set up and who walks in the door? Wacki Zawacki, Thunder, and Gabe DAVIS all randomly show up.  We open with Billy Squir, then go with some Autograph. The whole time the crowd is really participating. Singing along, hooting, and hollering. We figured two would be the end of it, but no as we hear a man and his taco exclaim, "One more!" OK, more often than not, you get what you ask for at an HK concert. So after strapping on freshly tuned guitar, we took it down a notch with "Rocky Mountain Way". A thunderous round of applause went up at the end and it was one hell of a way to spend the evening.  Thanks to all the FANS>

The return of HK

Tonight the tranquil dinner crowd at POKEZ was rudely interrupted by an HK 2 song set.
The band ate some tacos and then was egged on by the kitchen crew to headbang through one final tune.

It's good to be back playing LIVE.

We'll be coming to a sidewalk, house party, parking lot, skate session, or restaurant near you very shortly.

Pay tribute to headbanging heavy metal!!!!!!!!
