Immortal- Love Stories With Bite
Edited by P.C. Cast

 Stories by:

Rachel Caine, Kristin Cast, Claudia Gray, Nancy Holder, Tanith Lee, Richelle Mead, & Cynthia Leitich Smith

When you're Immortal, true love really is forever

Rachel Caine revisits the setting of her Morganville Vampires series, where the vampires are in charge and love is a risky endeavor, even when it comes to your own family

Tantalize author Cynthia Leitich Smith gives us a love triangle between a vampire, a ghost and a human girl, in which none of them are who or what they seem

Claudia Gray takes us into the world of her Evernight series, in which a pre–Civil War courtesan-to-be is courted by a pale, fair-haired man whose attentions are too dangerous to spurn—in more ways than one

Vampire Academy author Richelle Mead brings us the tale of a young vampire on the run from the rest of her kind, and the human boy who provides the getaway car—and a reason to keep running

Wicked series writer Nancy Holder immerses us in a post-apocalyptic New York where two best friends are forced to make a choice that may kill them both

Kristin Cast, co-author of the House of Night series, introduces us to a new kind of vampire: one with roots in Greek mythology, and the power to alter space and time to save the girl he's meant to love

And master fantasist Tanith Lee shows us what happens when a bright young woman with some supernatural savvy encounters a misguided (but gorgeous) young vampire

P. C. Cast is the New York Times bestselling author of the House of Night series (Marked, Betrayed, Chosen, Untamed) with her daughter Kristin Cast. She lives in Oklahoma.

*spoilers* Even MORE questions answered!
Category: Quiz/Survey

The questions listed below have been asked in numerous places- from the House of Night Forums to Facebook to here on MySpace.  Take a look below, your question may have been answered!

1. Do the covers you have chosen have any meaning? If so could you explain what?

The covers are each a version of Zoey and her tattoos.  Remember that it's just a image meant to artistically represent, so it doesn't need to be 100% accurate.

2. Is there any chance that The House of Night series could be optioned to become a movie or television show?

We're in negotiations right now with a production studio, so let's keep our fingers crossed for a TV series next season!

3.Going along with "Does the cover have a meaning"... Who is the person on the cover?

I know they've used a couple different models, but I don't know their names.  I'll have to ask and let you know…

4. If and when the series is over will you both (meaning you and Kristin) get together again and write something else? You seem to do a great job together!

Thanks!  Kristin and I love writing together.  Yes, we've already come up with ideas for at least two more series.  So, stay tuned!

5. How exactly does Imprinting work? I was a little confused, even with the short explanation.

Imprinting is hormone based.  When a vamp bites someone they secrete hormones, which get into the bloodstream and go to the brain.  Sometimes the reaction that happens takes on a more permanent behavior pattern, thus the Imprint.  It depends on the power of the vampyre (or in Zoey's case, fledgling), how much blood is taken, and how attached the two are before the bite happens.

6. Did you base your vampyres on actual vampirism?

I based my vamps on an idea my biologist father and I came up with and brainstormed.  The only aspects of already existing vampyre lore I used are the old stereotypes: aversion to sunlight, bloodsucking, etc.

7.There seems to be a very large emphasis on the difference between light and dark, good and evil, and how one does not always equate to the other. What are you thoughts on that?

My thoughts are that things are rarely as they first appear and that the world isn't black and white – there are lots of gray areas in life as well as people.

8.Which characters do you relate to the most?

PC: Aphrodite!
KC: Zoey!

9. Do the adult vamps' tattoos have any particular meaning?

Sometimes it reflects an affinity – like Stevie Rae's has earth images woven into it.  Other times it reflects personality – like Erik's is an actor's mask.

10. You mentioned in one of your acknowledgements that you put students into your book. Did you just use their names, or did you incorporate entire personalities? Also, do your students ever give you ideas for writing?

Sometimes I use names – sometimes I use physical characteristics – sometimes I use personality traits.  I never use entire anything, not even with Zoey who is based on Kristin when she was a teenager.  Once created, the characters take on distinct personalities of their own because they're not living in our world.

Sure – I ask classes for opinions on things and brainstorming help.  The teenage imagination is always a great thing to utilize.

11.Why the blanket label on all other religions?

There isn't a blanket label on all other religions.  The only other mentioned specifically is the People of Faith.  More religions will be brought into other books, but keep in mind the books aren't about religion – they're about intolerance and hypocrisy.  And all of that is seen through the eyes of a teenager.

12.Because of how well the cover seems to fit the book I just wondered; how involved were you and Kristin in the designing of the cover?

Our fabulous cover artist asks for descriptions, etc., which we provide.  Then we get to comment on what he comes up with.  For the cover of HUNTED (March 2009 release) I actually had a long conversation with him on the phone, and the cover is AMAZING!

13.At what rates do the vampyres age? Like, how long will a vampyre look like they are 20 years old before a physical change is seen?

There's no specific rate – it depends upon the vamp, just like some of us look a lot younger or older than we really are, depending on our lifestyles, genetics, etc.  Just know that they age much slower than humans.

14. The religion that they follow is described in great detail so it led me to wonder, how much research did you have to do on the religion?

I do a lot of religious research, but the religion of the House of Night is one I made up myself from combing elements of Wicca and Paganism and Druid (especially Celtic Druid) beliefs.

15. How did you come up to write Marked and begin the House of Night Series?

My agent said she wanted me to write a series at a vampyre finishing school – and I took it from there!

16.What is a tracker? (Vampire? Fledgling?) Where do they get the power to mark someone?

A Tracker is a vampyre, and he/she has an affinity given to him/her from Nyx that leads him/her to a human teenager who is beginning the Change.

18.What made you want to become a writer? Why did you choose to write YA/ Fantasy?

I've been writing for as long as I've been reading, which is as long as I can remember.  I have adult books in the paranormal romance genre, as well as the fantasy genre, so I've always enjoyed writing about the paranormal.  I choose YA this time because I enjoy reading YA, and I've always believed an author should write the book she would most want to read.

19.What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Research the career of writing just like you would any other.  Take classes.  Attend writers' conferences.  Read and read and read, and write and write and write.

20.I know that Stephanie Meyer, the author of the Twilight series, is greatly influenced to write her novels by the music that she listens to. So, what inspires your writing?

Research inspires my writing, and so does the world around me – particularly my students and travel.

21.How long does it take you to write a book?

It varies.  It's taken me from a year to four months.

22.Do you do book signing tours?

We do!  Kristin and I will be on tour in March for the release of HUNTED.  We don't know where all we're going yet, but stay tuned for more information on that!

23.What is your favorite book of all time?

That's too hard.  I heart too many books.  My top choices at this moment are: THE SILVER METAL LOVER by Tanith Lee, The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon, FAHRENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, anything by Pat Conroy, WATCHERS by Dean Koontz…the list goes on and on…

24.Who is your favorite author?

I don't have one favorite – I have many.  See the question above for my favorite books.

25.Do you both have any intentions, or dreams of your series becoming a movie? If so, what type of music would the soundtrack consist of, and do you have any idea who you'd like to play your main characters?

We're in negotiations right now with a production company to make a House of Night TV series.  I don't know about the music, but I would LOVE Tom Welling (Smallville's Clark Kent) to be my Erik Night!

26.Also, are vampyres capable of conceiving a child? And if two adult vampyre's do, is it guaranteed that the child will be a vampyre as well, or is the gene at random?

Nope – the Change makes them incapable of propagation.

27.When do fledgling Vampyres switch to the next form in HoN? Is it like normal school years, or do they switch on their own? And is there a set timeline when they change forms?

It's normal school years like ours.

28.How many other books will be a part of the House of Night series?

Right now we've agreed to write a total of nine books in the House of Night series.

29.Are you and/or Kristin Wiccan? I was wondering since the rituals described in the books are Wiccan rituals.

Kristin and I choose not to discuss our religious beliefs publicly because they are private, but we do respect and love the Wiccan belief system.

30.
Betrayed- Does this cover have a meaning? If so could you please explain?

It's Zoey – and I think after you read the book you'll get why she's walking away (imagine Neferet standing there, too).

31.Is that Zoey's mark on the cover? (Betrayed)

It's a close representation of her Mark.

32.Why did the police need to see Loren? (In Ch. 11) (Betrayed)

Perhaps because he was somehow implicated in the killings…you'll have to wait and see…

33. Hmm.. Question.. Adopt me? Kidding. Now on for my real question(s)..
a.       Are there ever going to be future pictures of Zoey's marks?
b.
What's going on with Neferet? Did she ever really care for Zoey.. Why did she do what she did?  Is she really evil?

Sorry – my quota is one kid per lifetime, and Kristin's already filled that!
A) yep – keep checking out the book covers and the website, www.houseofnightseries.com, for updates on tattoos.
B) Those questions are answered in HUNTED.

34.Most of us on here agree that the Twins and Damien are awesome and interesting characters, so I was wondering are we going to learn more about them in Chosen? I feel the need to know more about their past.

Yep – keep reading – the Twins and Damien are in all the books.

35.What causes a Rejection in the Change?

No one knows – a kid's body just can't handle it and basically they drown in their own blood.

36.Did you have a bad experience with religious people?

I think everyone has experienced some form of intolerance and hypocrisy.  Sadly it seems more prevalent in groups who claim to be so deeply religious they believe there is only one right answer to god questions, and that they know that answer.

37.Where did you get the idea for the People of Faith?

I blended together several different Christian denominations, heavy on what I see frequently here in the Bible Belt.

38.Since Aphrodite basically tried to sacrifice herself for Stevie Rae (by giving up her powers and such), does that mean that she has officially turned good? Does everyone else (the Twins, Damien, etc) finally see the good side of her?

You'll have to keep reading to get the answers to these.

39.  What is the deal with the moon necklace on the Chosen Cover? Did it have no importance at all?

It symbolizes being Marked – and it's pretty!

40.I was wondering why the Cherokee name for daughter changed in this book from what it was in the first two books.

There are a couple different versions of the Cherokee word for daughter – one is more commonly used.  I plan on making all these the same in reprints to alleviate confusion.

41.If Stevie Rae is back to being 'alive' again...does that mean she can like eat food or just blood?

She can eat food!

42.  Why did you guys kill off Loren Blake?

Well, it's part of what's going on with the House of Night, and I can't tell you all of that or I'll mess up future books.  And, quite frankly, Loren was an adult who preyed on a teenager – makes me think he needed to die.

43.Will you ever visit Louisiana for a book signing or anything?

We'll be on tour in March, but we don't know where we're going yet – so stay tuned!

Your questions answered- an updated Q&A!
Current mood: happy
Category: Writing and Poetry

1. What is it like to write with your daughter/mother? How do you write with someone else?

PC: I love writing with Kristin! Being an author is usually such a solitary job that it's nice to have someone else in it with me. Plus, knowing that Kristin is going to go over everything I write (I write the draft of an entire novel before I send it to Kristin for her to rewrite) takes a lot of stress off me. I don't have to worry about sounding too old or too young – Kristin will fix that. I just write the story.

KC: Writing with Mom is great because for once in my life I get to tell her she's wrong!

2. Do you have any advice to give young, aspiring authors?

PC: Definitely! Remember that being an author is a job. That means you need to research the career. Read writers' resource books and "how to" books written by authors you admire. Join writers' groups – take creative writing classes. Educate yourself about the basics of publishing. Then write and write and write – and rewrite and rewrite and rewrite. Once you have a completed manuscript, polished to the best of your ability, then you should be ready to begin submitting to editors and agents (and you should know how to do this through your research!).

KC: What should you write? Write the book you'd most love to read.

3. What are you currently working on?

At this moment I'm working on the fifth book in the House of Night series, HUNTED.

4. Can you tell us anything about Untamed?

Not much because I'm not going to spoil anything for you! But I will say I scared my own self writing it. It's much darker than the other books.

5. What made you decide to begin writing?

My love of books made me write. I've been a voracious reader since I was a little girl. Wayyyyy back then I dreamed of being an author. It's so cool that that dream has come true!

6. Do you have any hobbies that you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Kristin and I love to travel together. We've been road tripping since she was little. We also like to watch trash TV and go to the movies. I like to hike with my Scottie dogs! Both of us go to the gym a lot, but that's not really a hobby. It's more of a necessity because our other hobby is eating out at cool restaurants.

UPDATE- MORE QUESTIONS ADDED ON 5/22:

7. What sort of advice would you give to someone that has a passion for writing but has difficulty getting down words that would make sense to anyone else?

Honestly I'd tell you to focus on the mechanics of writing (spelling, grammar, structure) before you go further. What you're trying to say will never be heard or taken seriously if you can't say it in a literate manner. So read and read and read and write and write and write. Practice doesn't make perfect, but it can come close.

8. My mom saw that you were signing at the cute little shop in downtown BA…I forgot the name! But I am going to try and make it there! What is the date??

-Puleeze come see me/us Saturday! I'll be at Kaja Vu on Main Street from 11:30 – 1:00.

9. Some of the fan's were wondering if the necklace on the cover is supposed to be the Dark Daughter's symbol or something else?

-The necklace on the cover is lovely, but it isn't the Dark Daughter's necklace. You can find a picture of that necklace on our website at www.houseofnightseries.com. Just go to the House of Night school link, and then click on Dark Daughters. A picture of the necklace will then come up. It's the traditional Wiccan sign of the triple goddess, with two crescent moons backing a full moon.

10. I was wondering if there is a Q&A out there anywhere that might give me more insight into the story behind the story. I've seen other authors do this and loved getting more detail about the story. Kind of like, what certain characters outside of the frame were doing/thinking/manipulating (or even in the frame - I'm always left wondering if Z started imprinting with Heath in the parking lot after he fell off the truck - it read to me like he was almost in a trance), or a short back story on how so and so came to be together - that sort of thing. If not, that's fine.
Also, if you listen to certain music to help with the inspiration I would love to see the playlist.

-We do answer have a Q&A on the blog section of our myspace site, and there is some insider info to be found at the www.houseofnightseries.com website. Other than that I don't like to have too much extraneous info sifting around out there because I don't want spoilers to mess up future books.

11. Some of the fans on the HON forum were wondering the girl on the cover of Betrayed and Untamed is if indeed Zoey?

-The model on the cover does represent Zoey, but I like to think that my readers can also picture their own Zoey in their minds. I mean the truth is that Kristin is much closer to being the "real" Zoey than any model or actress could ever be!

12. How do you come up with your characters?

-Mostly my characters are inspired by real life students and past students of mine. That's one of the great things about being a teacher…and the daughter of a teacher…sister of a teacher…niece of a teacher… We know teenagers, and we have a cast (hee hees! Pun intended!) of kids/characters from which to choose. So if you're in love with one of our characters or moved by him/her or wish she/he was your best friend – more than likely that kid was inspired by a real person. Cool, huh?

13. Are you inspired by other authors?

-Lots: Ray Bradbury, Anne McCaffrey, Robin McKinley, Tolkien, Jane Austin, Shakespeare...Right now I'm reading Melissa Marr's INK EXCHANGE, a fabulous romance by Deborah Smith called A GENTLE RAIN, and I'm on a big Philippa Gregory kick so I'm listening to the audio version of THE VIRGIN'S LOVER. I feel strongly that an author (as well as intelligent, independent women) should read widely of many different genres.

14. Why a vampire book series? What made you pick a vampire story to write?

-My agent came up with the idea to write about a vampire finishing school. I liked it and immediately began to think about a high school setting. I live and teach in the Bible Belt, and Kristin and I get really frustrated with the closed minded idea that there's only one right way to believe and if you don't believe that one way not only are you wrong wrong wrong, but you're a horrid, sinful person. So we decided that at the core of our books would be the themes of acceptance and tolerance, and that we would create a group of character with a differing belief system than the norm. That's what created the story line, and it's still at the heart of our writing. My students inspire a lot of my writing. I've been teaching high school since 1993. My dad taught with me at the same school for 10 years before he retired. I think it's important to take the problems I see kids dealing with and use them in my novels. It gives them an authentic feel, even though the setting is paranormal.

15. Did you read any other teen vampire books to get into the right mind to write the house of night series?

-Nope. Actually I wouldn't even let myself read the first two Twilight books until I'd already written MARKED and BETRAYED. I don't read much YA while I'm writing YA. It's on my off time that I catch up, and then I just read for pleasure.

16. Is it weird writing with someone? You always say no, but are there ever times when you two completely disagree on something and you can't decide which way you want to go?

It was kinda weird at first. I mean, I'm used to editorial input, but writing as a team is different. I had a little experience with it because I've teemed up with the fabulous paranormal romance bestseller, Gena Showalter, on a couple anthologies we brainstormed together, and I enjoyed that. Kristin and I do disagree sometimes, but not about anything too big. Plus I'm the most experienced writer (and the mom!), so I tend to overrule her. She loves it when she's been overruled and then our editor makes the same comment she made so Kristin finds out she was right all along!

17. At the end of Brighid's Quest you left it open for the Fomorians to come back with Fallon and her baby. Will there be another book or was that just a possible lead into that is left up to the readers imagination?

Yes - I do have another book planned - CIARA'S DESTINY (don't you love Ciara?!). Sadly right now it's not written and I'm not sure when I'll be able to fit it in. When the day comes, though, I'll post info about it on my personal website, www.pccast.net.

18. What is your favorite part about being an author?

-My favorite part of being an author is that I'm my world's God(dess) and I can make whatever I want happen happen! (If I can talk Kristin into it, but since she's my kid I can always threaten to beat her...)
