“From Skin to Canvas” the art of Christopher Perrin....on exhibit 10/1/08-10/15/08
Category: Art and Photography

At one time Tattoos represented the seedy underbelly of society,
sailors, criminals, & carneys…all were marked men.

The connotations were dangerous and beautiful:
Underground rebelliousness and a snub towards proper society.
The beginnings of the Lowbrow art movement
embraced that aspect of the culture and because we're
suckers for tradition, we present…

Tattoo Artist, Christopher Perrin,

drops the needle picks up the paint brush

to show us a beautiful juxtaposition between

his two crafts. He paints on what he calls
"sasquatch hide" and displays each piece,

like stretched skin, in gorgeous

hand-designed frames.

Chris's signature style is instantly

recognizable with its roots based

solidly in traditional tattoo design

and a hearty influence of hotrods,

motorcycles, & horror culture.
His work generates accolades from
tattoo enthusiasts and art lovers alike

He tattoos out of Sid's Tattoo Parlor

in Santa Ana, California and with

this exhibit it is easy to see why his

schedule there fills up so quickly.

“When Life Hands You Lemmings…” The Anti-Censorship Group Show....on exhibit 9/6/08-9/15/08
Category: Art and Photography

Drama, Trauma, & a hearty rallying cry against the nonsense.
Hyaena gallery has come under fire recently

for some of the boundaries we try to push with our art shows.
The bottom line here at Hyaena…

Censorship is an Embarrassment within the Art World.
Now it's time to dig on some artists who cherish
their freedom of expression…

Hyaena Gallery has long been known as a harbor for the outsider, the dark, the experimental & the raw. Our goal is to promote art and artists alike that perhaps have not yet found a home in the greater Los Angeles, and often "world," art community.  We heartily believe that art should push boundaries and challenge the accepted aesthetic…that art should be surprising and shockingly insightful…that artists should never be restrained in their freedom of expression.

Our recent exhibit featuring the work of Stu Mead, an internationally exhibiting artist and true cult hero, rattled a few feathers and caused a bit of unexpected controversy.  As we were sweeping up the pieces amidst cries for censorship (and worse!), the local art community gathered around us with an overwhelming amount of support…making this group show possible.

Join us for a celebration of creativity from several Hyaena favorites and a whole new batch of incredible artists, all of whom embrace the niche we've carved here at Hyaena.  Check out new artwork from the likes of Jeremy Cross, Cam Rackam, Dienzo, Michael Aston (from Gene Loves Jezebel), Big Tasty, Jim Wirt, Anna Chung, Mickey Me, Ted Von Heiland, D.W. Frydendall, "Evil Paul" Springer, Erin Martinez, Spinestealer, The Creep, David Cook, Tamara Wade, Frankie Babylon, Gregory P. Rodriguez, Lauren Preston, Nicolas Caesar & more…!!  This is what art is all about.

Stu Mead was born in 1955 and he earned a B.F.A from Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Since then Stu has garnered a wide cult following in the underground art community, exhibiting his paintings in galleries across the world for over twenty years, and currently residing in Berlin, Germany.

His artwork encompasses a fantasy land of erotica where young women are incorporated into bizarre scenarios that transcend fetish genres.  His work explores taboos with an equal mix of sexuality and comedy and constantly pushes boundaries in ways that other artists merely hint upon.

Stu Mead was featured in the legendary book "Apocalypse Culture 2", published by Feral House in 2000 and the infamous French publisher, Le Dernier Cri, have release several books of his artwork over the years.

This is Stu Mead's first solo exhibit on U.S. soil in ten years and it celebrates the release of his brand new limited edition print portfolio, "Krampussy." Do not miss this rare opportunity to see his artwork in person.

Spinestealer will impress you with her atmospheric,
minimal mixed media sculptures, paintings, and drawings. Creepy, sweet, and maniacal, her art pieces crawl off of forgotten shelves and reach from their creator-imposed confinement on dilapidated walls.
They beckon kindred souls to join them on their journey…

Whether to an abandoned playground, a cemetery, or a haunted carnival, they guarantee the trip will be memorable.

"Beyond Repair" is a show developed around (Spinestealer's) physical illness, and the road traveled because of it. These are her most personal works, telling the story of actual events as well as expressing the emotional turmoil that goes hand in hand with becoming disabled.

The artwork speaks of turmoil, conveying betrayal, despair, physical pain, disability, alcohol dependance, struggle,
and most importantly....abandonment.
This is a powerful exhibit that is not to be missed.

Glenda Rolle is a genre-defying artist who is constantly
pushing boundaries and fearlessly exploring new realms.
A
Midwest transplant to LA, she creates in mixed media

and incorporates found and recycled elements into the bulk
of her work.

For this exhibit, Bottles & Bugs, Glenda shows the playful
side of her art by drawing inspiration from her childhood.
Remember lightning bugs caught outside and kept in a jar
for a precious nightlight? Rolle whimsically translates that memory
through the realization of her adorable sculpted bugs displayed
on canvases and in various bottles.

Glenda's limited edition hand-crafted dolls, the Sand Baby
Castaways
, have been seen in the pages of Gothic Beauty
magazine and her newest doll, a custom edition Poisoned Baby
will be featured in the Murder Arts music video by the German
industrial crossover band Pesticide.

"Welcome to Ravensville..." art by Erin Martinez....on exhibit 5/16/08-5/31/08
Current mood: enthralled
Category: Art and Photography

This month, Hyaena is officially celebrating our two year mark,
of providing dark, beautiful, and unusual artwork to the masses.
In that time, we've introduced a wealth of new talent into the
art community as well as several established artists who hide in the fringes.
What better way to kick off our third year than to bring in
one of our favorite emerging artists, in her first solo show here at Hyaena…

Erin Martinez is definitely an artist to watch.
Her work conjures magical dreamscapes
populated by crows, blood, trees, & tears.

Raw and emotional, in her art you will find
a pure, untamed passion splattered with
an outsider element and
Erin's personal
mythology. She paints what she sees
in slumber and shares them with us
in stark grays and vivid color.
Her work is haunting and calming
all at once.

Clint Carney
writes music, paints, and
excels at almost every other creative
endeavor he undertakes. A favorite
among the gothic / industrial / darkwave
scene, he is the singer / song-writer for
the bands SYSTEM SYN (Metropolis
Records) and FAKE (Static Sky Records).
He also plays keyboards for the band
IMPERATIVE REACTION (Metropolis
Records).

Clint's artwork depicts a brutal fantasy world
where we become the personification of
demons, body parts are interchangeable,
tumors take on a life of their own, and
self mutilation is both our punishment
and our redemption. It's dark, surrealistic
horror art that lies somewhere between
ManRay, Hans Bellmer, and
the Black Dahlia murder.

Look out for System Syn's new single
"Like Every Insect," in stores
on May 27th, and their highly anticipated
new album "End" scheduled for release
on June 17th.

We'll be playing the Brand New Album at the Opening
so you can hear it before anyone else!

Clara Boo is the artist behind the
creepy-crawly-scrawlies of Curioddities.
A consummate artist, Clara is a painter,
illustrator, and doll maker.  Her creations
bask in the glory days of old Hollywood
and hint of a new Victorian era.

This exhibit features nods to Edward Gorey,
Charles Addams, John Waters, Tim Burton,
Mark Ryden, Clara Bow, Pee Wee Herman
and the Alien Trilogy…
Eclectic, delightful, and playfully captivating,
Clara Boo proves again why Curioddities
remains a constant favorite among
Hyaena regulars and gallery enthusiasts.
