COOLEST COFFEE HOUSE IN PORT TOWNSEND, WA
Current mood: Optimistic
COOLEST COFFEE HOUSE IN PORT TOWNSEND, WA Blessed Love Idren and Sistren. A couple days ago Empress Kathy-I and I were wandering around Port Townsend, WA after dropping Anjahla off with her Uncle. About five blocks west of the ferry terminal we found a really cool little coffee shop. It's called the Boiler Room and is a non-profit corporation and is staffed and run by and for the youth of Port Townsend. They had lots of books and fanzines to read and made a good soy mocha in a big ceramic mug. We hung out and drank our beverages while two guys played guitar. The vibe reminded me of a small-scale, mellow version of the Gilman Street Project in Berkeley -- if it were a coffee house. Here's a copy of the menus for ya to check out, and a link to their MySpace page. Next time you're in Port Townsend check it out! You can't fool the Youth! Blessed Love. Jahson Ites

ONE OF THESE DAYS (IRIGINAL SONG LYRICS) chorus : One of these days somebody's gonna get even with you / That's not the sort of thing I'd do and anyway I've got no reason to / But someday your actions are gonna come back to haunt you / One day you're gonna cross a harder man who just can't control himself the way I can /// 1st verse: You lie to the people that love you - oh, the insincerity, how dare you act that way with me / I've been real with you from the beginning, now you look me straight in the eye and just tell another lie - why? / Cut that false dread from off of your head - don't be posing as a Rasta you weakheart imposta / 'Cause Jah Children can see through you and we see the wicked things you do when you think no one's watching you - remember /// chorus /// 2nd verse: You've been cheatin', deceivin', and now you've got good people believin' / You bring drama, scandal, falsehood, & derision - and then you try to cloak it in religion / All the while you're just causing more division 'cause your claims aren't backed up by the life that you've been livin' / I'm not kiddin', you should be quitin'; shouldn't shit in the community you live in /// chorus /// 3rd verse: Bountiful blessings is what Jah's commanding you - you gotta work hard for it, ain't nobody handin' you / Take an honest look at your life, see what Jah has planned for you / Put out some positive vibes, create demand for you / I know you're feeling lonely like we've all abandoned you / Believe it or not it's the same thing that we've all been through / so just tough it up do what an honest man would do / Just tough it up do what an honest wombman would too, 'cause /// chorus /// copyright 2006 J. THE WEIRD BEARD THAT AMERICA FEARED
Current mood: Insensed
Category: Insensed Life
THE WEIRD BEARD THAT AMERICA FEARED The history of America is often thought of as being bearded. That is to say, beards are thought of as having been normal up until up until the last 100 years or so. Many "great" men of history have worn facial hair. However, this wasn't really the case.
Early explorers and settlers wore beards, yes, but by the 1720's beards were considered archaic, and were considered so up until the 1860's. Ol' Honest Abe Lincoln was barren of face when elected, but wore a beard by the time of his innauguration. Grant, Lee, Davis, Jackson, Custer, and Burnside were all clean-shaven at the beginning of their careers, but were sporting full facial plumage by the end of the Civil War.
But this isn't the story of any of those supposedly great men. This is the story of a truly great man, Joseph Palmer. The son of a revolutionary soldier, honest, kind, deeply spiritual, and an abolitionist, Joseph Palmer became famous because he wore a beard at the wrong time in U.S. history.
When Joseph Palmer first moved to Fitchburg, Massachusets, in 1830 he already wore the chest-length beard that brought about his ostracism and persecution.
When he walked down the street small boys would throw rocks at him. Women would stick up their noses and cross to the other side of the street rather than pass near him. Unknown rowdies smashed the windows of his modest house. Local pastor the Reverend George Trask attacked Joe for his beard, yet Joe responded by quoting the Biblical commands that men wear long beards.
Despite the poor treatment he received from the rest of the congregation, Joe never missed a church service. But on a communion Sunday in 1830 the usually serene Palmer lost his temper. When he knelt at the communion rail the priest passed him by, refusing to give him the communion bread and wine. Joe stood, marched up to the alter, grabbed the cup and took a mighty swig of the wine. He then yelled, "I love my Jesus as well, and better, than any of you!" and went home.
Some days later he was attacked on the street by four men carrying shears, brush, soap, and razor, who told him it was the sentiment of the town that his beard should come off, and they were going to see that it did. When he struggled against them they through him to the ground roughly, seriously injuring his back and head. But just as the ruffians were about to start shearing, Joe Palmer got out his trusty buck knife and set in to carving up the legs of the men around him. None of them were seriously hurt, and Joe stumbled home with his beard intact.
He was arrested and charged with "an unprovoked assault". He refused to pay the judge's fine as a matter of principal, and for that spent the next year and then some in Worchester City Jail, some of that time in solitary confinement.
In jail he had to fight to keep his wiskers on at least three occasions, one of them organized by the jailor and his thug friends. None of the attempts claimed even a hair of Joseph Palmer's beard.
Joe wrote letters and articles and smuggled them out the window to his son, Thomas, who had them published in the Worchester Spy. Soon these letters were being copied and published all over Massachusets.
Public outcry became such that the jailor told Joe to forget the fine and go on home. He refused. "I won't walk one single step toward freedom!" he bellowed through the bars of his cell. He told the officers and magistrates that they had put him there and they would have to be the ones to take him out. He simply sat in his chair writing letters telling of the poor conditions of his confinement until the sheriff and jailors picked him up, chair and all, and carried him into the street.
He was now known as far away as New York and Philadelphia, and no more violence was ever attempted on his beard or body. He eventually bought a farm and settled down with his wife and family. Visitors to the farm were always welcome, and included the likes of Emerson and Thoreau.
He later bumped into his old adversary, Reverend Trask, on the street, only to find Trask wearing a beard of his own. Joe stroked his own beardand said only, "Knowest thou that thy redeemer liveth?"
Joseph Palmer died, a fully vindicated man, in 1875.

ANCIENT MESSAGE OF LOVE FROM IRAQ (8TH CENTURY)Worship by Rabia al Adawiyya
O my Lord, if I worship you from fear of Hell, burn me in Hell. If I worship you from hope of Paradise, exclude me from that place. But if I worship you for your own sake, do not withhold from me your eternal beauty.
Rabi'a al-'Adawiyya, a celibate mystic and ascetic from Basra (modern day Iraq), was canonized as an Islamic saint. Fire was a central symbol in her poems and in her spiritual life. She was called "that woman on fire with love."
