NEW BLOG COMEDY INTERVIEW...
1) You spent 30 arduous days on the road traversing the country with Dane Cook, Gary Gulman and Robert Kelly on the Tourgasm tour. Seeing these guys every minute of every day for a month must have given you great insights into their personalities and drives. With that knowledge in hand, how do you think the four of you would fare in a rumble with the Marky Mark inspired bunch from Entourage?
Wow, come out with a weird tough question right off the bat! I feel like saying who cares?, but that is not the answer you're looking for. Why fight "Entourage" who's on the same team as us? HBO. Plus I love that show. Why would I want to fight something I love? Why not have us match up against Last Comic Standing? Now that's a fight "Tourgasm" would win. One reason is because we have Dane Cook on our team. Let the new winner of Last Comic Standing rumble against Dane Cook. He's like a ninja in the comedy world. "Tourgasm" is a REAL Documentry about 4 working comics (not compeating) constantly growing as comedians & friends, behind the scenes on the road. Comedy is an art form to make people laugh not meant to be a competition. Why do we need to judge those that try to make us laugh? It's hard work because everyone thinks they can just step out in front of a large crowd and do it, but when it comes time to hit that stage most peoples knees would buckle.
2) Along with being a comedian, you are also a well established Comedy Club promoter, how do you manage to differentiate Jay the Comedian from Jay the Promoter?
Jay the Promoter opened doors for Jay the Comedian. I always knew that when I first started comedy no one was going to put me on their stage. So, I decided to build my own stage and put the best around me. I would then as a comedian learn from the best. Every comedian needs to also be a promoter. If a talented comedian is not a promoter then they will be in trouble. Our job is to make people laugh and without the people no one is laughing. We have to fill seats the rest of our careers even if we break into television or film, our jobs are to get ratings & fill seats. When I meet people on the street the first thing I say is, "Want to come to a comedy show?" it's a great pick up line.
3) At a show in Tampa you carted thousands of people who showed up for the Tourgasm stop to Bennigans. Being that you are from South Florida, why choose Bennigans instead of a more traditional Tampa stop such as Mons Venus?
That was not a Tourgasm show. It was just me and Dane on that one. Robert and Gary weren't a part of that perticular show. On the way to that gig we passed a Bennigans like three blocks away from the stadium. Since it was my birthday Dane and I decided to go eat there after our show. We had the idea to go ahead and just invite the whole damn stadium to Bennigans for my last minute birthday celebration. It was a moment I will never forget. Ha Ha. I'm laughing at the Mons Venus part of the question. If I had invited everyone to Mons Venus, Candi, Sandi, Randi, and Bambi would have given me free lap dances for life!
4) Dane Cook has credited Myspace.com with helping to get him where he is today, how has the site, helped to establish your reputation.
Dane Cook credited technology and the world wide internet to helping him get where he is today not to forget his incredible talent. MySpace was just one of the tools that helped him along the way. He was promoting himself online long before MySpace came along. MySpace just happens to be a promoters/performers dream come true. I was really pumping up MySpace the entire Tourgasm tour. I knew if we can just get everyone to be loyal to MySpace then it would become the best way to get to know your fans. So that now as an entertainer we can actually become friends with all of our fans. We have a way to comunicate, chat, and get to know who our fans are through the community of MySpace. I freakin' LOVE MySpace. If you are not on MySpace then it would be good idea to sign up. I check my MySpace before I check my home answering machine. www.myspace.com/jaydaviscomedy
5) What was the first joke you ever told?
Your mama.
6) With your Matinee Idol good looks, comedy acumen akin to such greats as Shecky Greene, Henny Youngman and Yakov Smirnoff, and the business sense of a hip Bill Gates, how do you plan on handling the Worldwide acclaim that is bound to come when HBO premiers Tourgasm on June 11th?
I am going to call Bill Gates and see if he can get me to open for Yakov Smirnoff. Actually, I plan on moving away from the opening spot unless it's for Dane Cook (who I'm as loyal to as MySpace) I plan on moving up the ladder one step at a time. I am happy going out as a feature comedian for a while. I am featuring some comedy clubs across the country all summer long with Tourgasm's Robert Kelly. I really look forward to winning over America and gaining a friend/fan base to support me as I grow into a headlining comedian. Then everyone can feel like they've become a part of my comedy. Watching a comedian grow is very exciting.
7) It has been said that you have the best hair in comedy, whats your secret to a well kept coif? Claroil number nine. Lot's of highlights. My sister is my hairdresser. So go to my sister for the Jay Davis hairdo. Mad props to my sis! She's been cutting my hair since I was nine years old.
8) As a promoter, you are able to bring in some of the top names in comedy, at seemingly a moments notice, to perform at one of the many nights you do in the Los Angeles area, how were you able to gain access to guys like Dave Chappelle, Jamie Kennedy and Dane Cook? And what advice would you have for people looking to break into promoting comedy?
Good Quesiton here. Now you're cooking! Obviously when trying to survive in Hollywood you have to take a regular job. I somehow ended up in the bar/nightclub business before I became a professional comedian/comedy promoter full time. I actually learned promoting from being in the nightlife business. If I had only stayed away from the alcohol & parites along the way I would have made it a lot quicker. I'm a people person. I was always out and about running the streets of Hollywood, getting to know everyone possible, collecting phone numbers and e-mails. I had done comedy twice before in Hollywood. Once when I was 19 at the World Famous Comedy Store and once when I was 25 at a hotel bar on Highland. I met Jamie Kennedy that night. He went on right before me and was shocked to see how many people came out to see me that night. We had become aquintances and devolped a friendship and respect for one another. Then I just stoped doing comedy for a long time and I was managing a little bar at a four star hotel that tons of celebrities would hang out at. My job was to make sure they were having fun so I would get to hang with them and buy them drinks. I ended up becoming friends with Dave Chappelle before I really started doing comedy on a consistant basis. I told Dave one night that I wanted to be a comedian. He said, "You need to just get on stage and do it all the time." That's when I decided to just start my own comedy night. Dave Chappelle found out through a mutal friend that I had started doing my own weekly comedy night. The next time he saw me he came right up to me and said, "Yo man, I heard you started your own comedy room. I'm impressed". He then said, "Everyone always says they want to be a comedian but no one really goes out and does it, not only are you doing it but you started your own comedy room. When is your comedy night? I'm going to come down and do your room." Sure enough that next Tuesday night Dave Chappelle came down to the Irish Pub with a make shift stage and rocked everyone's bellys with laughter. That was the night that put my comedy room on the map. At the time an up and coming comedian named Dane Cook had heard about Dave Chappelle doing this Irish Pub Comedy night and decided he needed to check it out. Dane came right up to me and said can I have seven minutes? I ended up putting him on stage and within thirty seconds I was witnessing the best comedian I'd ever seen. Dane became addicted to my comedy show and would show up every Tuesday night. I ended up devolping a huge respect from the comedy world for my promotions and hosting ability and star comedians started to mentor me. I can now pick up the phone to most of the biggest acts in the country and ask them to pop up at one of my comedy promotions. I really believe I have a true understanding on how to assemble a comedy line up to make the show the best it can be. If you are interested into breaking into comedy promotions then you need to move to New York City or Los Angeles to have the type of success that I've had. Also, you must have a real passion and love for comedy. You can't just like it or think it's something you want to do as a side job. You will never have success without the passion.
9) You recently won the award for Best Comedy Short at the 168 Hour Film Festival. Differing from your average festival, entrants to the 168 must finish their film from start to finish in a week, and all films contain a theological backdrop as each filmmaker is given a randomly selected bible verse to wrap the project around. How does your religion play into your comedy?
If you see my comedy you can see where I've been living spirtiually. The comedy I do on Tourgasm is a bit blue or dirty, but that's who I am and I'm not trying to hide it. I have GOD in my life but wasn't working on my relationship with GOD. I was running from GOD so it shows in my comedy. My comedy is honest. It comes from things I've really done & places I've really lived. I am not able to perform at a Church until I can transform my material. The more my relationship with GOD continues to grow the more my comedy will continue to grow so that people from eight to eighty will enjoy it. I'm not perfect nor do I ever claim to be. I am a sinner.
10) What can we expect from Jay Davis in the future?
I will become a national headliner selling out everywhere I go. I will be a positive role model to the youth. I will produce television shows & movies. I will act in comedy movies and drama as well. I will help others live their dreams. Once I accomplish all of this I will give back through charity. My relationship with GOD will always continue to grow. Along the way, I hope to meet the woman of my dreams marry her and have two kids. More highlights in my hair. The future is very near.
MUCH FUN & LAUGHTER ALWAYS,
Jay Davis

When I was 11 years old I used to have to wait for my school bus at a restaurant at the end of my street. Every morning these two very nice Haitian Dishwashers would wait with me until the place opened up. The first day I met them the one guy said in a broken French accent, "My name Francois what is your name?" I replied, "I'm Jay". He said, Nice to meet you I'm Jay. From that point on everyday they would ride up on their bicycles yelling "Hi I'm Jay! I'm Jay! Nice to see you I'm Jay! I would just wave and smile.
