I’m a redHEAD!
Category: Fashion, Style, Shopping

I got bored with my blonde hair so I decided to go red! For you aspiring red heads out there, I used RAW permanent haircolor in FIRE RED. I did it twice for brighter results...waiting 24 hours between dyes, and my base color was a natural medium blonde. It's starting to fade a bit, so I think I will do it again at the end of week...but the dye has no ammonia or peroxide, so my hair actually feels healthier. Reds tend to fade fast, especially bright ones, so I got a color depositing shampoo, to use between dyes. But I love being a redhead. Blonde gets boring.

Tour Van
Category: Automotive

This is my new tour van....and can I tell you how much I love, love, love, that it runs off of natural gas!...okay to be fair it's actually bi-fuel, which means it can run off of CNG or unleaded gasoline, but so far we have driven it 95% of the time on CNG. CNG is fantastic. It's cleaner burning, more efficient, and far cheaper. In Utah CNG is only 72 cent per gallon. In other states it ranges anywhere from that to 2.50. I'm all about taking down the oil industries and CNG is a great alternative. You also get tax credits for buying CNG cars and converting cars to CNG. We got a $3000.00 tax credit for buying this one. ..... (steps off soapbox)
So we are about to embark on our month long extravaganza that is 'the extreme tour" this is very exciting indeed! This is my first tour so I don't really know what to expect. I'm really excited about the states we are going to which include Utah, Montana, Oregon and Washington. I'm so tired of the concrete jungle that is L.A. I'm ready to see trees again! I'm especially excited about Oregon. Oregon is by far my favorite state. I could easily move there. I love the coast..the cliffs scare me to death (in a good way) I feel so small and yet feel like I'm apart of something so great, just by looking at them. The water is mesmerizing. When traveling to Oregon I feel like I'm going from black and white to color.
Speaking of black and white. I just wrote a new song called black and white. I will be previewing it out on the tour. I can't wait to get it recorded. It's a bit different for me, which is good. I feel like I'm moving forward as an artist and my sound is evolving as well, which is always good to feel like progress is happening. Standing still is death to me. I would rather be devastated than bored. I will try to update as much as possible while out on the road. Being that this is my first time I'm not sure how often I will be able to, but I will make it a priority. Hooray for life!

Life in L.A.
Current mood: contemplative

So, life has been crazy busy here in The city of Angels. I have been too busy to be homesick....but every now and then when it's quiet I miss my family and my Crystal. :( Our place here is amazing. It's a New York style loft in the heart of the city....so that's cool. I have been playing 1 to 2 shows a week, and I have already started writing songs for a new album. For the most part I feel like I am exactly where I am meant to be. I have met some great people and had some great opportunities come my way, which attests that I am indeed in the right place. Other times I feel a little hopeless and directionless, and I ask myself. Why am I here? Why did I bring my husband and baby to one of the most violent cities in the world?..and what do I really expect to happen? Thankfully those desperate times are the exception. It's funny how people out here (and probably everywhere) sit and wait for their big break or for someone to sign them or make them famous. They give away all their power. One of the many reasons this business is hard is that no one is going to get it handed to them...you must claim it. One must take charge of the situation, and not let anyone else determine their level of success. This is true for any business, and music is a business like it or not. I for one am all for free capitalism, there is no shame in creating value and getting paid for it...the problem lies in money being the center motive: We should pay our artists for their art, for the value that they create. and artists should be allowed to accept money without feeling greedy, wrong or impure.

The thing about L.A that stikes me the most is the potential for service. People rarely look at each other on the streets and they certianly dont make any sor tof contact. There are homeless folks everywhere you look and the city is very much divided depending on race, culture, how much money you make and so on. I feed the homeless on my streets, and even though they ask for money instead of food they are always grateful for the food. I try to smile and say Hi to people I pass and some smile back and others pretend they didnt hear me and pass on by. One guy down the street at the key shop had a face of stone and said maybe two words to me as he was cutting my keys. After he charged my card I sincerely said "have a nice day!" and he looked up at me and his face shattered into a smile and he enthusiastically said "Yes, Thank you. Have a nice day!" in a thick middle eastern accent and then proceeded to go out of his way to open the door for me to leave. That's pretty much sums up how I see many of the people in the city. They are cold and hard, but as you start to chisel away the hard shell you find a warm-very alive-person underneath waiting to connect, waiting to be seen, be heard, be loved. but then again... I guess that's true for all of us....

The UBG in Universal City: A great place to play

Last night was a great show. It was a pleasure to play for everyone who came out and thanks to those who bought CD's! The UBG is a great, intimate venue. The wallpaper looks exactly like the wallpaper on the OKgo Video 'Do what you want'...pretty cool stuff. Go just to check that out. It's a treat. The staff was great, very kind and very helpful. Particularly Jennifer the bartender. She is usually the day girl so if you see her there tip her generously. Many thanks to Sheena Metal for the booking. Check out her radio show at Music Highway Radio

My next show is at a Club called The Airliner. I will be performing at 5pm for what they are calling IndieFest. You can find the address at www.jessicapenrose.com

Hope to see you there!

Much love and really sloppy kisses-

Jessica

PS. There was a band called The Donnis Trio that played last night as well. They were really Fab. Check them out at www.myspace.com/donnistrio They are like a more varied version of Jack Johnson. The lead singer has a great voice, and listening to them feels like lying on the beach and sipping Lemonade.

New Review in NeuFutur Magazine

This is a review from NeuFutur Magazine of the new album: Enjoy!

NeuFutur Magazine

This sophomore release by Jessica Penrose starts off with police sirens, moving into a strong piano line shortly after. The piano line bolsters the vocals on the track, which are reminiscent of a Tori Amos of an Alanis Morrisette. Unlike these two artists, however, Penrose adds a little bit of electronic influence to the fold. The sequenced drums during this opening track place Penrose on a path that is completely eir own. On this new path, Penrose is able to give listeners something qualitatively different to appreciate. This different sound is furthered by the familiar yet distinct sound of Penrose's voice, which is able to draw influence from female artists in the field but adds Penrose's soul to the mix. Where "I Am" was a quicker, memorable track on its' own, the title track to "Words Become Flesh" is slower and much more soulful. Penrose's output on these two tracks is at diametrically-opposed poles in regards to tempo and overall sound. The decision to put two different songs so close together is a smart one for Penrose, as it is another lure for fans to bite on, should they not completely be behind Penrose at the conclusion of "I Am".
"Falling Asleep" links together both "I Am" and "Words Become Flesh" in that the tempo and feeling of the track exist in a middle ground between the aforementioned tracks. "Falling Asleep" has a better chance to break it big, as it uses the strongest elements from the previous two tracks. Of particular interest during this track has to be the bass line, which will undoubtedly remind listeners of a mesh of Eagles and Rush bass lines. While "Falling Asleep" uses a combination of various sounds and styles previously present on "Words Become Flesh", "Learn To Live" creates threads leading back to earlier tracks on the disc. This is most audibly heard in the simple, cutting piano lines that act as the backdrop for the track, in what seems to be a homage to the first track on the disc.
"Freebird" shows a different side for Penrose. The piano and all percussive instruments united to make exclamation points to Penrose's vocals on this track. Penrose's vocals create a chorus that is extremely catchy. If Penrose wants to receive radio play, chances would be best if ey included a note with each copy of "Words Become Flesh" to listen to this magnum opus, this "Freebird". Pick this album up if you want to hear a re-envisioning of what being a strong singer in the pop domain sounds like.
Top Tracks: Freebird, Words Become Flesh
Rating: 7.0/10

I will be in Lake Powell for a week
Current mood: busy

Hello all and thank you for tuning in. Just to let you all know I am going to Lake Powell for a week. Hooray!...So if any of you wonderful people with great taste in music (teehee) buy my CD, shipping may take a little bit longer than usual. Rest assured you will get your very own Jessica Penrose CD (just what you have always wanted) eventually.

Additionally, in my absence you will have a homework assignment. Instructions are as follows:

1. Go to youtube and search for Ron Paul
2. Get very familiar with his values and policies on issues
3. Spread the word to all your friends.

This country needs structure! This country needs a father figure that will tell it when it's being a mean little pig (oh sorry. I just had a Sarah Silverman moment) anywho...study up kiddies...there will be a test later. OK not so much, but I will be posting many blogs and discussions on the next election and more specifically on Ron Paul and why he is the answer for this country. Please, please, please comment, give your two cents, talk, listen, feel.... whether you agree or disagree this is what America is all about. Stay tuned for more....

Want an Electric Car?
Current mood: aggravated

I went online today to search for electric cars because gas is 3.21 per gallon (gasp). I have always been interested in the notion of an electric car but have never been driven to really pursue it as a real alternative. I only own one car between my husband and I (a subaru) and a scooter.....so I guess I have felt like I have been doing my part in that alone. But now with gas soaring not to mention additional little facts and theories I have been collecting about the oil industries, I decided it's time to step it up a bit and make a change. So, I went to various different sites looking for my new electric car. As I did I came across some of the most ridiculous and over priced pieces of ........plastic. I'm not so much for making a fashion statement with my car but even I would be embarrassed to drive some of these. I dare say I wouldn't be caught dead in public in these cars. The only one I liked was the Tesla....which is very sexy..only thing is, it has a price tag of 98,000 dollars! Unbelievable! So, even if I got past the horrible designs I would have to pay upwards of 90 to 100,000 to purchase an electric car......Oh sure I could buy one of those three wheelers that has a max speed of 25 MPH, but that's completely unrealistic. My scooter goes faster than that. It seems to me BIG OIL must be in control of these companies somehow, or that they truly don't want to change the world, but would rather fill their pockets and sell cars to George Clooney. If these companies were really about changing the world as some of them claim they would make cars that not only have a sleek and desirable body style, but cost between 10-20,000 dollars. The problem is Big OIL Knows the only way they are going down is if the middle class takes them down. It doesn't matter if George Clooney or Leonardo Di Caprio buy electrics, they can afford it, and they represent a minority of people that can drop 100,000 dollars on a car. The middle class ( the class that allows all the travesties and horrors in our goverment by thinking they can't make any difference...see V for Vendetta) on the other hand only want to spend 20 grand on a car, and they want it to go 100 mph top speed and they want it to have a decent body. I don't think this is too much to ask. If such a car existed Big Oil would lose billions and yes WE COULD CHANGE THE WORLD. But until those IN THE MIDDLE CLASS----this is most likely you----realize the power that you have as THE MAJORITY...as the class that runs this country by it's consumerism, nothing will change. These companies will just make a small tiny dent in the oil companies profits that they can probably write off in their taxes. Bring me a man or woman who can build an electric car and sell it for 20 grand and who is morally unpenetrable, and Iwill buy an electric car. Until then I will have to settle for a Toyota or Honda Hybrid and deal with the ugly body styles.

We have the technology.... so why isn't it available for the masses?
We have the market..... so why isn't their a decent product?
We have the desire....so why isn't it making a difference?

and who is profiting from our ignorance...or worse our silence?

Launch of www.jessicapenrose.com
Current mood: drained

So I have been working (not so tirelessly) on the new website and it is finally almost done! At least it is up an running.Check it out at jessicapenrose.com I still have to add some great little features...like I'm working on getting all the downloads available to be bought directly through me via PayPal...woohoo no middleman! But for now you can pre order the CD...just head on to the Store sub page. You can also download my first CD "Eve's Fault" through SnoCap. One thing I am working on getting up on the site is "self determined pricing". This is where you get to choose what you think the song is worth to you. You can download it for free, or you can name a price, or you can just pay the standard rate...pretty cool eh? Viva la Indie Revolution!

Album Cover
Current mood: accomplished

I had the pleasure of working with a great team yesterday for the photo shoot of my new album cover. Charles Uibel was the photographer, check out his work at http://GreatSaltLakePhotos.com. He did a terrific job. And Gabby and Robin did my make-up...which was quite a challenge getting all the words on my skin the way we wanted them and in a way that would work for the shot! It is so great working with creative and inspiring people. Everyone had great ideas and the day went off without a hitch! Even God seemed to smiling down on us with the great sunshine that the day provided. We shot a varied range of photos but displayed here is the album cover for my upcoming release, Words Become Flesh.

Thanks for tuning in!
