the email slog...
Current mood: sleepy
So... I think I was close to 3 or 4K emails behind--I've been severely limiting myspace time and email time, etc to write faster. It's kinda working. I think. I'm never going to be a speed writer, but I'm moving forward so that's good. I went in and did a huge clean out and mass delete of my backlog of email. Found all sorts of stuff that I never knew I'd gotten. Letters that are probably months old. YOWZA. I hope I haven't snobbed anyone by accident.
I'll take a closer look tomorrow. Right now it just feels good to not see thousands of unread emails glaring at me.
'nuff on that...
Anybody have any New Year's Resolutions? Mine are always the same. Get organized. Get in shape.
Maybe I should change them this year. Mix it up a little. Hmmmm...
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!!!!

WHAT A WEEKEND!
Current mood: cheerful
Went sailing with some friends and then also to Ren Fest. WOW! WOW! WOW! There is just not much better than hanging out watching other very creative and slightly insane people. Bad news was that I didn't write on Sunday so now I'm back to the beginning of days in my (at least) 100 words a day challenge. The good news: there's nothing like a little fun and inspiration to plug you back into the flow of the writing. Yesterday and today have been goooooooooooood writing days. I'm somewhere around 1/4the of the way done with draft 1 of book four.
Speaking of books: Book Three (The one I was calling Master of Passion) is getting a new title.
Here's the short blurb:
He haunted her dreams. She haunted his nightmares.
She betrayed him at the altar and her father sold him into slavery.
Kidnapping her was only the beginning of his revenge.
So, if anyone has any fun titles ideas, please pass them along.
And... not on the subject of books--but on the stuff books are made of: I've been taking a class about trees in Houston. www.treesforhouston.org
Here's some interesting stats:
Houston Trees are worth $205 billion.
The Trees in Houston save $111.8 million in cooling costs for Houston residents.
Houston's regional forest removes 60,575 tons of criteria air pollution per year.
From 1992 to 2000 there was a 17% decrease in forest area around Houston.

Late is Late. Period.
Current mood: annoyed
Today I learned that being late for elementary school because you fell on your bike and hurt your elbow on the way ranks the same offence as being late because you were wondering around the streets smoking pot or dropping by a liquor store and even robbing a convenience store.
Yup. Gotta love it.
"Tardy is tardy", says the lady behind the desk. No exceptions. Really it's no big deal, she assures me as she cheerfully marks "UNEXCUSED" onto my son's tardy slip. If it's no big deal, then write "excused" on there, huh? It's a big deal somewhere or we wouldn't have this stupid rule, now would we?
Who the bleep decided that the school secretary wasn't smart enough to decide for themselves what "excused" vs "unexcused" was?
Not unless it's medical, she told me. I guess the elbow bruise wasn't medical enough. What do we need--blood? Broken bones? An Rx for Ritalin? Maybe I should go back to school for my M.D. (AKA G.O.D.) degree so that my kid can get the "excused" thing checked on his little paper.
sheesh.
Just my morning rant. I'm off to write now. And brainstorm titles for Book 3.
Will be in a better mood later.

What is lurking in the school cafeteria?
Current mood: busy
The outside of the elementary school menu my son brought home says, "Healthy Earth. Healthy You."
So... let's see what "healthy earth, healthy you" means here at Texas schools...
A sampling of what is offered for the kids to eat:
Cheesy Nachos
Hot dogs
Hamburgers
Meatloaf
Corn Chip Pie
Chicken Fried Steak
Mini-corn dogs
Fries
Tator Tots
So, uuuuuuuuuuuh...exactly.which one of these qualify even vaguely as "healthy-you" food?!?!?!? I see plenty of over-processed junk filled with preservatives and additives. Not an organic vegetable listed. Not a fresh fruit in sight
I asked my son about the so called "healthy" part and he said, "It's all gross. And if you get any of the healthy stuff, It's REALLY gross. Mushy asparagus. Soggy peas. Disgusting lettuce. All the fruit is bruised and squishy. Yuck!"
And, therefore, (at HIS request!) now he brings his lunch. We're not exactly food purists as far as nutrition goes but we don't eat a steady diet of hot dogs and processed gunk either.
So did they come up with saying "healthy earth" because all the food tastes like mud?

Are canvas bags legal in Texas?
Current mood: contemplative
On our trip in South Dakota, I bought a canvas bag that I really, really liked. I justified the expense by telling myself that I'd use it for grocery shopping when I got home. I'm kinda tired of trying to figure out what to do with the dozens and dozens of bags that accumulate and multiply like rabbits. I've heard they take anywhere from 15 to 1000 years to decompose--I'm not really sure which number is right and, come to think of it, how would anyone know that they take 1000 years? Is it just some number pulled out of a hat or do they know a Merlin who lives backward in time? Maybe there is some machine that simulates it. I dunno. But, in any case, I don't think they are something that God intended for turtles to eat:
By the way, I didn't take this photo, it came from here:http://www.environment.gov.au/minister/env/2004/mr10mar04.html
And don't you really have to wonder why they were taking photos of this instead of getting that gunk out of the turtle's mouth?
So, ANYWAY, today at Target I pick up a few things and I put the bag on the conveyer belt on top of my 5 items and tell the cashier (I have learned to tell cashiers ahead of time), "I brought my own bag."
"Okay," she says, then picks up my bag. "This is your bag?"
"Yes."
"Okay," she says, and lays the bag on top of the check writing platform. Then she picks up the first item, scans it and puts it into the plastic Target bag.
I hold up my bag. "I brought my own."
*she gives me the blank look*
I'm like, "umm, uh... I want my groceries in there--I brought my own."
There was kind of an awkward pause.
I felt like maybe I was doing something illegal.
