DVD - Overview - TV series - Strong Medicine
Current mood: relieved
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities
Strong Medicine: Season 1: Original Release Date: 2000
(Apparently, LIFETIME did run at least three seasons, but has only put ONE (the 1st) onto DVD at this point in time. )
CAST:
Rosa Blasi, Jenifer Lewis Joshua Cox, Janine Turner Brennan Elliott, Philip Casnoff
(CAUTION: violence, language, adult themes).
INFERTILITY, ABORTION, RAPE, GENETIC TESTING, CO-DEPENDENCY, BREAST CANCER, AND RIGHT-TO-DIE
NETFLIX. COM:
When hospital administrators need two doctors to run Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Women's Health Center, they turn to Dana Stowe (Janine Turner), head of the women's medicine unit, and Luisa "Lu" Delgado (Rosa Blasi), director of an inner-city clinic. But to successfully care for others, these differently minded physicians will have to find common ground. Included are all 21 installments from the premiere season plus the series pilot.
Whoopi Goldberg, who plays a prominent role in the Pilot episode as Dr. Lydia Emerson, a women's health pioneer, also returns in three additional stories.
"This is a great show about a doctor (Luisa) who wants to help everyone. This show is very realistic…"
"People from different worlds being thrown together in a common experience makes for some great drama, conflict, resolution, and insight into how people think, feel, and operate. "
"This Lifetime series is mostly aimed at a female audience, although anyone can find it poignant and enjoyable. The public health messages are cleverly mixed in with the show's "goings on" that remind women to get yearly check-up, paps, mammograms, etc. It also addresses questions that many women face in their daily lives and shows different ways to cope with them. As a medical student, I find this type of subtle health education to be fantastic. "
MORE ABOUT...
Strong Medicine: Season 1
Amazon. com
Two strong-willed, capable female doctors with differing approaches to medicine must forge a working relationship when their practices are merged in this premier season (2000) of Lifetime television's longest running original series.
Rosa Blasi plays Dr. Luisa "Lu" Delgado who runs the inner city South Philly Women's Clinic serving a full caseload of indigent, drug addicts, and abuse victims. A straight-talking maverick, Dr. Delgado is sympathetic to the plight of her patients as she fights to keep her free clinic afloat despite financial hardships.
Janine Turner (Northern Exposure, Cliffhanger) plays Dr. Dana Stowe, a polished-if-not-sterile surgeon at the prestigious Rittenhouse Hospital treating patients on the opposite side of the city and socio-economic spectrum. Practicing textbook medicine, Dr. Stowe chafes at Delgado's unconventional methods. (Turner will remain in the series until the early part of season three).
A stroke of fate pairs the women to run a brand new women's heath center and, although sparks fly professionally, the doctors haltingly approach a level of understanding.
The season explores a variety of women's health issues: INFERTILITY, ABORTION, RAPE, GENETIC TESTING, CO-DEPENDENCY, BREAST CANCER, AND RIGHT-TO-DIE.
Complex medical questions are explored from several perspectives without succumbing to quick resolutions.
--Lynn Gibson
Product Description
Dr. Dana Stowe (Janine Turner, Northern Exposure, Cliffhanger) is the head of women's medicine at Rittenhouse Hospital and doesn't let her emotions get in the way of her work. Dr. Luisa "Lu" Delgado (Rosa Blasi, Noriega) runs an inner city clinic and does whatever it takes to get her poverty-stricken clients the care they need. When the two women are paired up to run the Rittenhouse Women's Health Center, they must learn to work together even with their respective approaches clearly on opposite sides of the operating table. But can they get past it? From Executive Producers Whoopi Goldberg and Tammy Ader, this long-running Lifetime series contains all 22 first season episodes on a 5 disc DVD set.
(Caution: violence, language, and adult themes).

My thoughts on Current Events
Current mood: Molested by the Status Quo
Category: Molested by the Status Quo News and Politics
Hillary Clinton has managed to suppress a lot of dirt that was well-publicized when she was just a savvy attorney and a governor's well-educated door-kicking wife. She was newsworthy mainly because of the scandals and opportunistic financial deals she was able to score both as a result of her practice and her affiliation with political moguls. Unfair financial deals that became more sordid as her husband advanced in the Political Scene.
John McCain is something of a predictable miracle of the Republican underbelly, but then if the people could elect George W. Bush, really, why should John McCain's survivability in the current affairs of presidential hopefuls come as any surprise. This candidate shouldn't have a prayer in hell of getting elected based on his slipshod maneuvering as a clumsy candidate, coupled with his tunnel-visioned attitudes and policies that should tend to exclude him from popular appeal more than gather momentum. Republicans are creatures of habit, however. The habits, however, tend to be centered around greed and asset protection... Particualrly for those who choose to seek election into leadership positions in Republican politics. McCain isn't so typical of such a statement, but his greatest financial party supporters most certainly are... and we all know that this is really how any candidate gets any significant and effective support in politics... via stalwart capitalism giants and off-stage financial moguls. It isn't so much the agenda as it is the $$$ at stake. McCain isn't the most ideal candidate for the Republican party, he's simply the least sharky looking one, after all, he's almost nothing at all like George W. Bush aside from his stature, he's stance on foreign policy and his grasp on verbal articulation. The two individuals have a very different approach regarding how to survive in politics, and how to define one's role in the service of leadership in the public sector.
Hurricanes & Florida...
Pardon my insensitivity, especially to all my friends who happen to choose to live in the state of Florida... but seriously, you've heard me say this so many times before...
Choosing to live in a state where you are guaranteed to be bombarded by hurricanes at least several times each and every year, thereby risking the likelihood of losing absolutely all of your worldly possessions to flooding at least once or twice each year is effin' INSANITY!
Florida... I've never been there, and personally find the idea of visiting Florida so remote as to make it virtually unlikely that I will ever visit Florida at all.
Mississippi is a state that I absolutely will never visit for entirely different reasons. Maybe ignorance on my part, yet I tend to firmly believe that some attitudes and habits dyed in the wool simply do not fade, nor will not at least in my own lifetime. Institutionalized prejudice/Ignorance is frustrating.
Air Travel (Spain)....
When does it become more profitable to exercise responsibility on the job than it does to pass the buck on down the line as quickly as possible? Corporations are the greatest scourge and catastrophic evil this planet has ever known (Also See "POLITICS" as referenced above).
Olympics....
Cross-the-line and be disqualified for consideration. Tough break in competitive sporting events, and yet rules are rules. In the real world, those who were disqualified in the Olympics TRACK events for crossing the LANE line during a foot race would still be the fastest couriers on foot. Never forget that these folks are not losers.
-- Swimming... No doubt a lot of folks are going to be buying super fast, latest technology swim suits... the best advertisements on the planet for these ultra fast swim suit designs are lauded daily in the Beijing Olympics. Additionally, a great many other enhancements have been made to the accessorized pool itself. While this is absolutely a thrill-ride for the swimmers and the fans alike, those swimmers will likely spend the next few years making adjustments in swimming expectations when swimming in less generously optimized pools. I do not expect existing pools to be demolished and re-built simply to accommodate the interests of Optimal Performance enhancements. Though, no doubt, the trend to devote more planning and expense to future pool design and developments will be of chief concern to those who seek to impress and attract others to make frequent use of such pools in their possession.
$$$$$$$$$
Mother Nature... Gaia, the planet... whatever operates withOUT a budget and without any conception of commerce... capitalism is not part of any natural order; it comes naturally to nothing and no one. Capitalism is an aberration of the focus on economy and efficiency and the greater good of evolution and ecosystems in general.... Remember this when you strive to survive and thrive and perhaps find yourself wondering whether or not you are doing "the right thing" or operating according to a reasonable outline of how to succeed... because the pursuit of commerce and capitalistic ideals is in absolutely NO WAY natural, nor I suspect is it what it is promulgated to be... enjoy the illusion... you are meant to... by and for the greater good of those who very much want your money in their own coffers.

[finally] Checking in with friends...
Category: Friends
In January 2008....
I enrolled in a Medical Assisting program at Everest college here in Vancouver, WASHINGTON ...
I’ve been wanting to get back into school for many years, and it’s the economic strain that has been the biggest concern... I managed to convince myself that with all the OT i was getting at work... I could set aside a few bucks to ride it out (the fact that I would be decreasing hours employeed when enrolled in school) at least until I could get my TAX REFUND, and that after that point, the TAX REFUND would carry me for another month.. and that is exactly how it worked out... beyond that point... I was hoping to have landed another job with better pay by THIS time, or by APRIL 2008... so far, i’ve been too focused on my studies to focus on changing part-time jobs.. and have simply continued to go to work on weekends at the fast food place where I work.. and struggle thru the back to back shifts until sunday, sleep all day and then go back to school and enjoy the easy ride and educational high that comes with being in school... and then dealing with the weekend again each time that comes around. so far, so good. it’s that weekend that i dread so much. minimum wage and under-staffing and it just sucks. anyway... it’s really much more difficult than it should be. understaffing will do that. and if i had the time to spare, i’d be doing overtime still as has been the case for the past year or two, or longer, really in that lousy food industry... extremely dissatisfying to get overtime pay that does not even amount to what i had been making as a pizza delivery driver back when i thought having a personal automobile was a really good idea. i am so glad i got rid of that money pit of an automobile. well before the gas prices climbed above $2/gallon so, the past several years of overtime pay amounts to less than i was earning before trading pizzas for tips and fees. even here in the NW which is far less profitable than doing the same line of work in Texas... population density, i suppose.. yes, that makes sense, really.
Anyway... overtime at minimum wage is still less than what anyone should be earning in today’s economy, i SHOULD be earning three times the minimum wage ... or even more and yet not being required to work more than 40-50 hours per week. OT for me during the past several years has meant 60 - 80 hours per week, seven day work weeks, and sometimes two - three jobs simultaneously, to maintain a steady pace of 55 - 90 hours per week of hours worked... so when it isn’t actual OT pay, it’s still OT hours worked.... and all at a level of income less than what I used to earn at 25 hours per week driving around delivering pizzas!
yeah, ... phuck that!
that’s what i said, once i got a moment to catch my breath and really look at it all.
anyway... so, now I am enrolled in a Medical assisting program... grad date is in April of 2009. i’d like to extern at Kaiser Permanente of Vancouver, WA and hopefully get hired on there...
I have a B.S. degree to put alongside the Medical Assisting diploma and related certifications I’ve acquired and will acquire.. and I believe that will be sufficient for Kaiser’s elevated standards... I would also like to advance into an RN program paid for by the company. I hear that Legacy Hospital offers such advancement OFTEN, and that Kaiser does so as well... Kaiser is most local to me and i am very happy with the professional and personal approach that company projects between doctors and patients. So, i am focused on Kaiser.
As to MUSIC industry concerns...
I will continue writing music cd reviews... though only a few per year... maybe upto 2 dozen... and i will be submitting those for consideration to GothicBeauty.com for online publication. I will do so around my schedule of availability only and i am only interested in reviewing CDs by bands with whom I have an established rapport; only NEW retail-ready format, and again, only with bands and musicians that I already know and who contact me first about the availability of their new music materials.
My contact phone number remains the same as it has been for nearly a decade (since moving up to the NW): 360.513.9121
I will not likely be contacting anyone in any manner that could be regarded as solicitation as I simply do not have time to initiate such proceedings, nor keep track of the progress of such proceedings once initiated.
As currently reflected by my log-in practices, I will only be checking in with my myspace.com INBOX about twice monthly (at best).
Musicians with whom I have worked well in the past know me well enough to know how to make contact, keep in touch, and follow traditional methods of music CD submission.
I have made many friendships in the music industry. ALL of whom I respect professionally and personally on a level that invariably begins with professional communications and adherence to reasonable protocols.
And just so that the above information becomes absolutely crystal clear.... the following must be understood:
I have not and never will audition online audio at any stage in the process of considering new music for review purposes. Any attempts and requests for online audio auditions are both ignored and deleted. Please do not waste your time sending such requests to me.
Again, those who know me well already know that about me and my music review guidelines.
Something else I’m working on today....
Starting an on-going Spanish-to-English translation effort to help make the industries in which i work more effecient wherein and while I am involved.

re; INDUSTRIAL SPANISH--ENGLISH - VOCAB
Category: Jobs, Work, Careers
attached: INDUSTRIAL SPANISH--ENGLISH - VOCAB - 5 pages[1].rtf
The file attached [pasted below] relates particularly well to Food Service utility of the language between English-speaking and Spanish-speaking co-workers/team members. Any support & general interest with the next similar project will be appreciated...
re: INDUSTRIAL SPANISH - ENGLISH : VOCAB
Next objective (on-going project)...
To develop Medical Assisting industry Spanish-English translation vocabulary lists (accurately defined).
Requirements: NEW VOCAB List generation, proof-reading, revision, correction, and subsequent re-printing. Post-accuracy verification, List distribution, archival, and continuous/periodical revision and updating with additional terms (defined).
General Purpose: Improving communications between staff members (some of whom may struggle with speaking English) and between staff and patients (some/many of whom may struggle with speaking English).
Perspective: Naturally, as our skills increase and multiply our roles in health care may take us outside of English-fluency institutions and into the real world where real patients communicate best in their native language(s). As Population density on the planet increases, the prevalence of English may diminish more rapidly than it multiplies in comparison to other languages spoken locally and abroad.
