The Question: How can omnivores & Herbivors cohabitate or date?
Current mood: hungry
Category: Food and Restaurants
I have been a vegetarian all my life, since conception, raised by good old-fashioned New Age hippies, before it was New. My advice is don't date a new convert of anything, unless you desire their derision, judging, and incessant preaching about how much better they are than you. The most annoying loud-mouthed person self-righteously bitching about that noxious, deadly cigarette in your hand is the one who quit smoking yesterday. Convictions are like religion, they only work on a spiritual level for you. Living with a veggie- You will eventually eat less meat, mostly out of convenience. It is a hassle to make multiple meals, making sure the meat stays in the meat pot & the veggies won't become contaminated. There is no reason why you couldn't cook for you when you want that pot roast or hamburger. There are meat drawers and veggie crispers in the refrigerator for a reason. Maybe one shelf is meat free & the one below it omnivorous. I would never prepare meat in a meal, mostly because I don't know how (and it is ickky). This does not mean I want to dictate how the one I love derives her sustenance. In the beginning, think of it like any personal habit that someone might find objectionable- like the ultimate by-product- Farting. When still ironing out all the peccadillo , you might just inquire, "Hey baby, do mind if I enjoy a nice meat-fart at the dinner table?" or "Do you mind if I store my meat-fart in your freezer?" (Now just substitute the word fart for meal.) This will ultimately resolve how to act around each other during meal prep and ingesting times.
Those of us who know better, and are secure with our beliefs will only secretly smile smugly whilst you eat that filthy rotting carcass smothered in BBQ sauce.

letter from Paris
Current mood: blissful
Category: Writing and Poetry
Kevin Bonjour We went to the Moulin Rouge last night and it was spectacular. I just did not expect such a grand show. The dinner was grand as well. The set up of the room was clever and not the usual thing. The tables were in such a way so that all the guests could see the show without the difficulty of regular set up alignment. The costumes were colorful and brilliant from the most diminutive "sans top" to the elaborate. In one of the finale's numbers the girls butterfly like wings did light up and it was stunning. It was a peppy show moving fast including comedian, ventriloque, acrobatic couple of unusual aptitude and variety of physical stunts, then an aquarium dance number with three huge Boas like snakes and a pretty female aquatic dancer. Lots of singing and lots of girls and partners, young and physically fit. The aquarium slowly raised from under the stage to full view. Numbers includes the ceiling of the stage that descended and had unfolding steps to reach the planks of the stage. Stunning. Another number included on the left a male dancer and on the right a female dancer cabled to the semi circular tract in the ceiling that could not be seen. They did glide in mid-air almost to center front of the stage to music. My daughter and I did a Cha Cha on the dance floor just next to the stage where my Great Uncle's music used to by played. It was very emotional to be just there and "performing" of sorts. Lynda did a swing with me and we were both pleased that the selection of musical numbers by the band allowed it. They just do not play American tunes as in the States. Still it was perfect anyway. In the elaborate folder of the Moulin Rouge were some historical facts and it listed the Star Mistinguett singing "Ca C'est Paris" music of my Great Uncle, in the 1929-30 era. His name was not mentioned and it was disappointing. None the less his creation of music for the French Star is there and for anyone recollecting the details of those famous 1929-30 years he is in our minds. Her name was mentioned with the title of the song "Ca C'est Paris." How I would have liked to be there with them in those years! I was not yet born! Jose Padilla Sanchez died in 1960 in Madrid, Spain. His music and spirit are still with us. Time for a luscious breakfast and I must go. The sun is bright on this Saturday morning. With grandiose memories from Paris Marcel Toussaint PARIS - POESIE - LECTURE - AU CLUB DES POETES 05-10-08 Kevin, While the preparations to read my poetry here was scheduled before I left the States, it took some planning for a whole week. Hum, it is not that easy to get them to let you read here. I had to send by email some of my poetry in advance. Then I was required tactfully to read in semi-private in the club as I arrived early to get myself acclimated to the Club and the room. I had with me my daughter and husband and two guests including Linda. I called for reservations from the States and then from here. I did not tell many people that I was to read here in advance of the event. I always feel more "secure" to give the news after the fact, for then it had become a fact, un fait accompli. We took a taxi from the Marriott Rive Gauche to Rue de Bourgogne. It was a narrow passage for the mid-size car. There early, not a soul in the long street; it was lined up for a block by motorcycles of all sorts. A sign read "Club des Poetes," over a stone wall of gray. Immediately the ambiance was of a mixture of the 1700's and of books of poetry on shelves from decades ago to today. The heavy beams of the ceiling and the light stucco of the walls were from the earlier period. The doors were also antiques. The whole setting could be taken for a drinking spot near medieval times. Books were cluttering the shelves spaces with an organized intent that got somewhat disarranged by the clients curious to read a book of poetry here and there and not putting it back where it should be. I felt being visually scrutinized. Two French men, apparently in charge, asked questions in want to know my credentials. I volunteered some verbal reply and then gave them to read the cover of my second edition of "Remember me Young" to come out revised and with added poems this fall. I then found out that one of them was actually born in the States, lived there ten years and has been in France since then. We were given a couple of places were we could sit. and they wanted to know if we were to stay for supper. Aperitifs and red wine were poured to everyone's content. I surprised them with the fact that I just do not drink wine. To them it must seem a "mortal sin." Thankful they asked if we had any allergies or dislikes. I was the only one with a short list of "I do not eat" this and that and drink no wine... I made certain not to tell them that I did drink champagne... we all do have faults or half-faults! Hopefully I am in the half-faults section. After the usual long European wait to be served, splendid large plates of lettuce leaves, tomato slices, shredded carrots into strings and a quarter of a cantaloup melon were presented with olive oil for me and balsamic dressing for the others. A large basket of baguettes cut in small portions was brought over, the freshness and crustiness were a pleasure to experience. I was asked to read my poetry and I had been told a week ago I would only read three poems. So I did and the owner poet Blaise Rosnay and two of his assistants were generous with their applause. I requested to be allowed to read one poem in English for my guests. He granted me this privilege. I felt then that this was my reading and it would be all. My guests suggested that at the right time of ten I would be asked again. The most savory slices of lamb were on the large European plate with strings and strings of very young and tender green beans and roasted cut potatoes. I was brought up with green beans that were taken to a gold and burn state, a flavor that I cherish very much. These green beans were as if just picked. I wondered if I would be able to eat them? They turned out to be incredibly good. The potatoes were as if from my mother's kitchen and the lamb as if from my godfather's farm, grilled on an outside open fire over charcoal. Time lingered then passed. After a few days in Paris I have almost mastered the art of waiting patiently. The door of the Club got closed in medieval style. The lights were dimmed or extinguished and two purposely weak spot lights concentrated their rays toward a high stool by the bar. Poet Blaise Rosnay recited without any prompting papers, three substantial poems. Very well received by the attentive audience. His very young son was raised to the tall stool, he recited well a poem he had learnt and memorized. Then came my turn. Here was the official reading at the club. I read three poems in French, they let me read another one and then I ended with an English poem. I did appreciate the warm applause knowing that they would not have given it if they had felt less enthusiastic about them. The French audience is very particular about its approval of any artist. Having my daughter and friends there was a "safety" support as well. Poet Blaise Rosnay ended the reading part of the evening with a well performed, well read poem that he classified as "rather long". It was interesting to listen to and with his inflection of voice the meaning of his poem was even more so appreciated. The lights went on, one by one, and we returned to reality and the daily need to find transportation at a taxi stand. We walked forever. I pulled my brief case on wheels behind me. This gave me some support. I had left behind at the hotel my walker that made my touristic days more bearable with the extended need to cover lots of long marches from one place to the other. I had help in taking the walker up and down the multitude of steps that confront all pedestrians. We finally got to a busy area where taxis congregate. It was past midnight when we arrived at our hotel. The end of the day was rewarded by the most comfortable bed and pillows ever found in a lifetime of travels. You should be here and enjoy the City of Lights. A bientot Marcel Toussaint

“SLAmnesty: ’You may say I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one.’”
Current mood: adventurous
Category: Writing and Poetry
To Whom It May Concern: Amnesty International is an organization that focuses on preventing and ending abuses of human rights: physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom of discrimination as expressed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Amnesty International Saint Louis University is hosting a slam poetry outdoor event on campus titled: "SLAmnesty: 'You may say I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one.'" Three-time HBO Def Jam slam poet, Big Poppa E, is coming to emcee the event. He has a very diverse appeal and will draw many different kinds of people--students, staff, faculty, and general public--to the event. We also invite local slam poets and artists to participate. The event will be held outdoors on Tegeler Field on Friday, April 18th. It is tentatively scheduled for 3:00PM. We also have a rain date and location at BSC 170 on Saturday, 19th. This is a FREE event and will be open to the public. We hope you will join us as a poet for human rights! When fighting against social injustices, the dream for equality may seem intangible and grueling. This event seeks to unite poets, musicians, social justices groups on and off-campus to ensure that the dream for a better world is still alive and we are not the only ones fighting. Please join us as we make strides to unite and protect human rights. Please contact me, [insert name], at [insert email and/or phone number] if you are interested in participating at this event. We look forward to working with you! Please contact us as soon as possible so we can confirm our poet line-up.
