My Advice to indie Artist
Current mood: accomplished
I get a lot of questions from artist and request from artist, bands looking for the connection so here is what I can offer is a lil advice. 1. If you have talent it will not go unnotticed. 2. I believe that 99% the deals given to artist are the ones that are developed. 3. Have your packag developed with at least 3 to 4 songs professionally mastered. This will be included in your Press Kit and or E Press kit. 4. The industry is very visual so shooting a quality music video on HD, 24P or 3 chip digital would be ideal to sell yourself as an artist. 5. A&R directors are looking for potential Super Stars so have your stuff together when you invite them to your shows. Tickets and a free meal is always a courtesy they would enjoy to come and see your perform. 6. A&R directors do what is called a Buzz Scan. They are looking for developed artist that are selling units. If you can get your network to buy units and promote it on the net, and local radion stations, colledge radio stations you can rest assure they will be contacting you. 7. Have a interactive website for your fans to listen to your music, vote, polls, blogs etc. Post your music video on your website not just on myspace but you should be able to track the amount of unique visits to your site. Always update your site monthly with new photos and events where your performing at. 8. Support other indie artist, do shows together and have a support team that believes in you. Create a strong network between you and other artist that believe in you. 9. Stop recording an entire album unless u have a distribution deal or have your own record lable and tend to strike a distribution deal. Why record an entire album and 99% of the songs are garbage. Invest time and money into what will be quality that your fans will love and will purchase. 10. Sell your music on your website stop all this free downloads. You are an artist and this is your career and you need to prove you can sell units. Someone elses is probably downloading your music for free and selling it!!! 11. Work on your image and marketing strategy. 12. Sell your music every where u go, on the streets, in the clubs, out the back of your trunk, on the freeway, in the malls in the hizzood, and track all sells from a bar scan. 13. Test your music do market research. Take your single to a dj and have him to listen to it, see if he will play it at the club to see what type of feed back he get from the crowd. Pay the dj for his time unless you have it like that. Have friends and family to give you their honest opinions. 14. Attend all music conventions and be prepared to submit your hard copy press kit to A&R directors. 15. Partner with a trust worthy manager who can push you and aid you in getting a record deal. 16. Take constructive critisizm, don't take it personal when someone tell you that they are not feeling your music. 17. Write your own songs but be open to colobarating with any artist or producer that can bring some heat to your concept. 18. Hire an A list or B list producer to produce your tracks or someone who is a great producer and can connect with your style professionally. 19. Don't be a lazy artist but give your self room to breath. You have to get out and get away from it all to come back refreshed. You will love yourself for that. 20. Hire an entertainment attorney to handle all contracts. 21. Set a goal to sell 10,000 units in 3 months even if you don't achieve it do an evaluation and pull your team together to see what can be done to accomplish that goal in the next round. 22. Dream big and follow your dreams no matter what the cost! One more thing...when you perform PERFORM!!!!!!
