June 17th Newsletter!

Dearest friends, family and do I dare say fans... :-)

Hello and happy (almost) summer! I have missed you all so much, as my writings have been few and far between lately.
First I want to thank EACH of you, for today marks the one year anniversary of the release of my first album, "Break Open." Thank you for being a part of that personally momentous occasion with me and for all the love, support and belief before, during and since its conception.
After last years summer of touring and humble press, I turned inward and have spent the majority of this year working behind the scenes with Music at a wonderful Movie Studio. And while my record may not have reached number one on any charts (except maybe on my dad's ipod) some of the projects I have been able to support behind the scenes have, including the new Sex and The City soundtrack (go buy it!). So God does answers prayers... if only in indirect ways so far. :-)

As many of you may know, acting in film and bringing musical theatre to film has been my dream since my first conscious thoughts began... so this March when I was given the incredible gift of a small singing role in the upcoming Nick Cassavettes movie, "My Sister's Keeper" I was elated and grateful beyond words. Me singing in a movie = a wonderful step in the right direction!

Track 5 on my record, "It's Okay To Be Here" was placed in an indie film titled "Essential Life" currently making it's way around the indie festival scene. And I have had some successful cowriting experiences with talented songwriters leading to hopeful future placements.

That is my update for today, June 17th 2008. Thanks again to all who celebrated with me a year ago at Hotel Cafe. It was an incredible night!
Here's to a wonderful summer.

LoveLoveLove,

Kaiulani

The Sounds of Spring

I love waking up in the morning to the sounds of birds singing. Spring is like a constant song where joy permeates each moment with sounds of life... it is so beautiful... so innocent... so awake. I love waking up to the sun peeping through my windows, there is a stillness and an aliveness that creates a smile on my lips before my eyes have even opened.... my head still resting on my satin pillowcase, All feels luxurious an abundant... and possible. I awake in prayer to God, to the birds, to the sun... how would you use me today? How can I be used today... I am here to flow downstream with the reigns of my creator gently guiding me to be all that he would have me be.
Good morning... and thank you.

----

Hello hello! Christmas is approaching and I hope you are all enjoying your christmas shopping, holiday celebrations and the anticipation of REST... I know I am.
Between Christmas and New Year, I am planning a whole day of DVD watching and tea drinking... ;)

I've posted some pictures from the New Line Christmas party that was this week. The Christmas tree I am standing in front of in the pics is seriously about 4x the size of my little baby tree I have in my apt... I find that to be funny.
Realizing that I don't have a single tree ornament, I have covered my tree in lights and soon... tinsle... if I can just remember to actually buy it and shell out the what... 99 cents? I have also bought a bunch of poinsettias which are absolutely gorgeous!

It is a busy time for me, and on the week days after work I am collaborating with a new and fantastic songwriting partner of mine, Peter Wood... and thanks to his encouragement and the request of others, I have written my first christmas song... it is almost finished.
It is titled "My First Christmas In LA"

It's dorky, but true, and I think I may love it. ;) After 4+ years living here I am finally spending my first christmas here. Thus, the title. Very prolific.

Happy Holidays my myspace peeps and any others who may be reading!

Much love and may we all keep it honest and real,

KK

PS: The gorgeous girl to the left in the pics with me is my friend Barbara... I wrote a blog about her this Fall called Stardust. She is amazing.Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Loving the writing
Current mood: envious

I love writing songs. I am still impatient as anything when I write. But I love it.
It feels so good to write again after a hiatus while recording and releasing "Break Open".
The next layer of honesty is coming through... more writing with the abandon I practiced when I first started to write and there was no sensor on the creativity.

Uninhibited expression followed by some experienced, smart editing= good. Very very good.

Having made a record, I have LEARNED so much. And I am enjoying applying that to the present moment.

I am officially back in LA after some amazing traveling and performancs and great TV/radio press in Maine.

I am sunkissed and very blonde.

And my apt is a mere 100 degrees... at night.... with the fans on... yikes... I am embracing it. ;)

I have been feeling so grateful and then envious of others and then grateful and then envious... back and forth until it is all just friggin gratitude.

I am entirely unquantifiably successful but I've really never been so happy. And at the end of the day I am realizing that success is really the level of joy being experienced at any given moment.
So I guess in this regard I am pretty successful.

So far in the record selling world I am a complete failure. In "kaiulani world" I have done so much work and really uncovered a core of joy inside of myself. So today i get to enjoy the absolute experience of being BOTH a failure AND success. And realize that it is all part of the human experience and not at all personal.

Perhaps this ever-unfolding inner discovery will tranfer into success in the record world at some point... none of my business really... but a girl can hope. In the meantime I just do what I do... and "be what i be".

Xo

La La La La La
Current mood: peaceful

So it has been awhile since I have blogged. Now seems like a perfect opening to say hello and catch up a little. This coming week I will be doing 2 radio programs and a TV program here in Portland Maine. I also have a show/ CD Celebraton for and with the community I grew up with here off the coast of Maine.

My whole family is here right now and we are packed in the house, personalities galore all alive in one space. It is quite the science experiment of human experience.

The sun is perfectly beating down on me as I sit outside overlooking the atlantic ocean here off the coast of Maine. I love this time of day. The water looks like crystals and diamonds, a sea of jewels... and the air is alive with summer life. I am able to report that the mosquitos are alive and well too. I hope they are using the massive quantity of Kaiulani blood that they have extracted from my arms and legs for good purposes.

I am hoping the nbc show that I am taping on wednesday I will be able to post on my page afterwards to share with all of you.
For those of you who have the record, any song favorites you would like me to sing or hear as a single?

Sending much love and peaceful summer days. Love, Kaiulani

Kaua'i
Current mood: sleepy

Pics from Kaua'i- It started off as a trip to support and celebrate one of my dearest friends birth of a baby boy... but after a week of spending time with her on the north shore and lots of lovely baby holding, I have been fortunate enough to meet new friend after new friend and explore the island.

Today we went up to the canyon in Kauai- twirled under banyan trees (originally from India, this tree is sacred to the Hindus. The roots grow downward from the branches), swang in hammocks, went swiming by the salt ponds and I wrote wrote wrote... it has been a beautiful day...

And of course I can't be here on the islands and not think of Princess Ka'iulani. I am so grateful to her for the lineage of this beautiful name.
