A Day of Remembrance
Current mood: nostalgic
In remembrance of September 11, 2001, I just want to say thank you to all the soldiers, Marines, doctors, & everyone else overseas putting their lives on the line every day. They don't have to do what they do. They do it because they love their country and the people in it. Sleeping with one eye open, eating crappy MRE's, and spending months away from their families isn't something they do because they want to. They do these things out of a sense of duty and honor many people can't understand. I for one, am very thankful such brave individuals are protecting my country.

Excerpt 3 from City of Secrets
Excerpt 3 from City of Secrets - This is a scene right after Jade has almost been involved in a hit and run, and just barely missed being hit by a truck.
Now Available from The Wild Rose Press
"David. What are you doing here?" She swiveled and had to catch herself from falling once again.
He stepped out from the shadows of one of the trees, and she couldn't help but notice the strange glint in his eyes. He appeared almost angry, but she couldn't imagine why he would be. She also didn't understand why he was here. Had she called him?
"I'm here to take you home." He answered her question with a clenched jaw.
"How did you know I was even here?" She didn't remember asking Mrs. Katrakis to call him. Or had she? Everything had happened so fast.
"Maya called me. She wanted to make sure you were okay. I already called your mom and explained everything so you won't have to worry about dealing with her tonight."
She sighed inwardly. "Thank you." That was one less thing she needed to do before going to sleep.
She rubbed the back of her skull and concern flickered across the grooves of his face. Despite the intense gleam in his eyes, his words were soft. "Are you all right?"
"I'm fine, I just want to get home."
He turned his attention away from her and looked at Peter, his eye's narrowing slightly. "I've already talked to Officer Morales. They can take her statement tomorrow. Is she free to go?"
Peter nodded. "Yep, she's got a clean bill of health. Although, she will need someone to wake her up at least once tonight to make sure she doesn't have a concussion."
"It's taken care of. I'll be staying over." He moved over to Jade and put a possessive arm around her shoulders.
She started to protest, but the feral look in his eyes stopped whatever she might have been about to say. He might as well have been a dog marking his territory the way he was holding on to her.

Excerpt 2 from City of Secrets
Excerpt 2 from City of Secrets Now Available from The Wild Rose Press
"Not this time. I have an incentive to stay in town." His voice was low, intense, and there was no mistaking what he meant. He'd come to a decision. This was a battle he didn't intend to lose. The time had come and she needed to understand. She was his.
Her back still faced him, but he saw a definite change in her stance. It was slight, and if he hadn't been watching her so intently he might have missed it. She understood exactly what he meant.
Instead of responding however, she muttered something about finding her shoes.
"Jade? I have your shoes." His words forced her to turn around. He held out flat sandals, which she took wordlessly.
"Thanks," she mumbled, but wouldn't meet his gaze. She fumbled around in her purse for her keys.
"Aren't you going to ask me what my incentive is?" He wanted – no needed – her to ask.
Maybe she already knew the answer. The past couple days, hell, years, had been building up to this moment. She might not be prepared for the truth, but it was coming out anyway. He was sick of carrying this burden.
"What is it?" Long, heavy lashes lifted and their gazes collided. The question came out as a whisper and almost seemed to stick in her throat.
"You." The word hung in the air, suspended by an invisible string.

Excerpt 1 from City of Secrets
Current mood: artistic
Exerpt 1 from City of Secrets now available from The Wild Rose Press
A shuffling sound from behind alerted her senses that she wasn't alone anymore. It wasn't unusual for stray cats to run through the alley, but the tingling sensation that rippled down her spine told her that it wasn't an animal behind her. The hair on the back of her neck stood up, but before she had a chance to move or even think, something cold, metal, and sharp bit into her neck.
"Scream and you die," a young, accented, male voice whispered in her ear as he pressed his body up against hers.
She froze and fought the bile that rose in her throat. The vile creature holding her was fully erect. This couldn't be happening to her. Not with David so close. Her heartbeat seemed to slow down, as did everything around her. Only seconds before, the sound of laughing tourists beyond the eight-foot wall almost drowned out the blasting music from across the street. Now she heard nothing. Nothing except the roar of blood in her ears and a strange man's shallow breathing.
The man spoke again. "Nod if you understand."
Unable to speak, her head jerked up once and something warm trickled down her neck. Blood. He must have cut her. Strange that she couldn't feel any pain.
"We're going to take a little walk to the end of the alley, and you will not fight me. One wrong move and I shove this Ka-Bar into your stomach and watch you bleed out."
Her legs twitched underneath her, but somehow she managed to move forward. The alley next to her store was blocked from the east and south by a thick coquina limestone wall. Only a small opening to the west led to a cobblestone street. Unlike San Marco Avenue, there was little foot traffic where he was taking her.
She needed to think. Going along with him guaranteed her certain death. Or worse. Her heart pumped loudly in her ears, her limbs felt detached from her body, but somehow she found her voice. "What do you want with me?"
