An article about my amazing friend Dottie...
Current mood: Proud to have known her!
This is an article that was in The Bronx Times about my amazing friend Dottie. Her spirit will live forever!
Dottie Person, the young mother of five whose tireless struggle against cancer inspired hundreds of neighbors during a benefit in her name last summer and thousands of others who followed her battle from afar, succumbed to the disease on April 2,. She was 32.
Though Person only arrived in Throggs Neck in 2003, when her husband, Andy, became assistant to the president of Maritime College, her electric personality earned her countless friends both at Maritime and in the wider neighborhood.
Crowds poured into St. Frances de Chantal Church on Wednesday, April 4, for the first of two funeral Masses, the second planned for Monday, April 9, in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, her hometown and the town where her parents still live.
"If you ever met her, she looked like the girl next door. But this was no ordinary girl — she was a superhero," Andy Person said in a eulogy at St. Frances. "Her name to most people was Dottie, but her superhero name was Mommy. She lit up the world with her smile, and embraced each one of us with her hug."
Person was diagnosed with melanoma of the lung last February, while eight months pregnant with her fifth child, Jack. Doctors performed an immediate cesarean so they could begin treatment, and for the next four months, as baby Jack lightened the mood of the Person household, Dottie fought to remain positive as she underwent round after round of chemotherapy.
As Andy Person explains in a web journal on Caringbridge.org — a nearly week-to-week account of her struggle — Dottie spent her weeks of strength doing what she loved: walking her children to school, and even making time to attend the annual Beef and Beer in Philadelphia last June.
She was about four rounds into her chemo when a close friend, Nancy Rueger of Throggs Neck, decided to throw a benefit on Maritime's campus to help the Persons cope with the disease financially. She called it "Dottie's Family Fun Run and Walk."
Despite Dottie's concern that no one would show, hundreds lined up on July 15 to sprint around the track, play outdoor volleyball and enjoy the summer breeze. Dottie, once again in between sessions and full of energy, was on hand to blow the race's starting whistle and cheer the runners on.
"Dottie's spirits have never been higher," Andy Person wrote on the online journal after the Fun Run.
Still, her cancer continued to advance. A post-chemo treatment was not successful and in November, as doctors were preparing to remove Person's right lung, they noticed the melanoma had spread to her liver. The Persons remained positive: "This is a marathon we're going to win," Andy wrote. "Dottie is amazing and remains positive through this whole thing."
In late January, after doctors restarted chemotherapy, they spotted a tumor in Person's brain. They planned to remove it through laser surgery — "Dottie continues to remain positive" — but a few weeks later called off the procedure, notifying Dottie there was nothing more they could do.
Thousands of friends from the Persons' original and adopted homes, plus supporters they met through Caring Bridge, took part in a Day of Prayer in early March to seek a miracle cure to Dottie's terminal cancer. Andy reported later that she died peacefully.
"Dottie always exemplified strength, grace and faith," Rueger reflected in the difficult week after her death. "Her dynamic personality, beautiful smile and awesome sense of humor warmed everyone she met. And her character was amplified during her last year on earth."
Dorothea Anne Boyle was born in May 1974 in King of Prussia, a suburb of Philadelphia, to parents Thomas and Dorothea, the fifth of six children. According to friends, the energy, humor and kindness she exhibited throughout her illness were not newfound traits — in fact, they defined her character from the earliest age.
"Honestly, she was just the most loving, energetic person from the time she was five years old until the day she died," said Katina Corrao, who grew up with Person and has remained a friend since pre-K.
That spirit followed her to Temple University, where she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in occupational therapy in 1996 and was president of the Delta Zeta sorority. Person was at once a straight-A student and the life of the party, roommate Jocelyn McKean said.
"We would just be sitting around in the apartment doing homework, and she would come bursting out of the bedroom wearing a miniskirt, with her hair in pigtails, dancing to Billie Jean — just out of the blue," McKean said.
"She was just fun. And she was also a great friend — she'd always listen," she said.
Person had fallen for her future husband before she arrived at Temple, and they stayed together despite the distance between her school and the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland, which he attended.
They married in June 1996 — a month after graduation — right before Andy was to be deployed for six months, and later settled in Annapolis to begin raising a family.
"They were just what everybody wanted in a spouse," McKean said. "They were just so considerate of each other, very loving, and they always put each other first."
Friends agreed that Person's greatest wish was always to have a large, loving family — one they say she achieved with Andy and their five young children: Elise, Caroline, Drew, Mary Kate and Jack.
In his eulogy, Andy praised his wife's driving philosophy that everything in life is a gift, that nothing is owed to you and that each day must be cherished. He said she was truly grateful to her last day.
"Mommy's superpowers are faith, hope and love, and the source of her superpowers is gratitude," Andy said. "In the mirror of Jesus, Mommy showed us how to die but more importantly, she showed us how to live. And remember — real superheroes live forever."
Online donations should be sent to the Person Children's Fund, located at the following secure web location: www.active.com/donate/dottie. These funds will go toward leaving a legacy for the future welfare and college education of Dottie's five children.
Story Collection Project:
In order to preserve Dottie's memory for her five children as they grow older, her husband Andy is asking that friends send stories they remember about Dottie to aperson@sunymaritime.edu or Andy Person, 6 Pennyfield Avenue, Bronx, N.Y. 10465. Your written stories are sincerely appreciated in this important project to preserve Dottie's legacy for her children.

How lucky I am to have had a friend like Dottie. We met when we were four years old.The earliest memory I have is the time I slept over her house and we went to Dairy Queen with her mom in our pajamas. We would always laugh about that! There was always something very special about Dottie. She had this amazing laugh, strong character and sharp wit.Her incredible heart and zest for life was remarkable. Everyone who knew Dottie was better for it. When Dottie became sick, her love and passion strengthened like nothing else I've ever seen before.I am in awe of how she lived her life but it was how she lived the last days of her life that inspire me the most.
So, I have been sick all week. Yuk. Fever and everything associated with being sick. I finally have the strength to check my Myspace. Hmp. A couple of years ago I never would have written that sentence. Okay, what? I think I am still sick. Why am I all nostalgic? Why do I suddenly miss my pager and night guard? Okay, anyway, the point is, I have been dreaming about this guy all week. Tucan Sam.
He has been haunting my dreams. That damn nose appearing every time I close my eyes. Those rainbow colors. Those loops of fruit. Tucan Sam. Fly away Sam. Fly away Sam. I'm getting better Sam you can leave now. I am still afraid to close my eyes. Or worse keep them open. What if this is at my door the next time it rings???? I truly have Tucan fever.

Does anyone remember Whoopsie? She was my best friend when I was a wee little one. She went everywhere with me. You would squeeze her tummy and her ponytails would fly up and she would make a "whoopsie" sound.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Toymaker Hasbro and the Consumer Product Safety Commission on Tuesday recalled 985,000 Easy-Bake toy ovens after finding that kids' hands and fingers can get caught in the oven's opening, thereby posing serious risk of burns. The CPSC said the Easy Bake Oven is an electric toy and is not recommended for children under 8 years of age.
Ovens sold before May 2006 are not included in this recall, the agency said.
