Treating infant KP on the face - forum entry
I’m looking for some suggestions and support. Our newly adopted daughter has fairly severe KP on her cheeks. Our pediatric dermatologist prescribed AmLactin 12% twice a day and we are doing that faithfully. The redness has decreased and the bumps are smaller, but they are still quite plentiful. I’m going to look into the Vitamin A issue - she was adopted from an orphanage in Russia and must have had a very fatty diet because she was chubby but with no real muscle tone. That also has improved substantially. I’d love to hear what others have tried and have or have not had success with in treating facial KP. Oh, she also has some spots on her knees/thighs, but they are pretty flat and skin tone so they aren’t too big of a deal. But her facial skin texture is really poor...... Thanks - I’m finding this incredibly depressing and so worried about what my little girl will have to deal with in the future.

Re: Treating infant KP on the face...
I use Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment (by Eucerin) on my daughter’s skin. It’s thick when first applied but absorbs pretty quickly, works very well. I read about it on Dr. Greene’s page about KP. www.drgreene.com/21_84.html Carolyn
Re: Treating infant KP on the face...
Carolyn, thank you so much for your reply! Did/does your daughter get the bumps on her face too? I’m thinking maybe this in combination with the prescription lotion - I’m going to pick some up TODAY! It has me so bummed out - her height or this skin thing alone I could handle fine, but together, I’m so worried for how she’ll handle adolescence some day. She’s going to be really tall - she is over the 97th percentile for height - and to be that tall and with a skin problem. I’m also starting to worry if it’s going to be progressing. She has a few more spots showing up on her legs - just praying she isn’t covered in this. I remember having what my mom called "alligator skin" on my knees, but in retrospect, I think it was just callous from rubbing when crawling around. I get it now on my ankles from sitting on the floor with the girls.
Thanks again for your response. It means the world to me! Lynda
Re: Treating infant KP on the face...
Last year my 2 yr. old daughter was almost sent home from preschool with a "rash", lol... I told them that it was not a rash, it was keratosis pilaris! I explained the condition to them and was a little suprised they’d never heard of it, being a preschool and all. Anyways, I was just browsing through this board and thought I’d say hi. I’ll have to try the product you listed on her too.
Cheers.
Re: Treating infant KP on the face...
Audrey, does your daughter also get the bumps on her face? I found samples that the dermatologist gave me of the AmLactin and using that now instead of the generic. I find it absorbs much quicker so she is less likely to get it on her hands and then into her mouth or eyes (a constant worry). And since she is biologically related to you - did you have this also? Was it on your face and did it improve as you got older? So many resources focus on the arms and legs, but my daughter has it so on her face.......
Thanks so much! Lynda
Re: Treating infant KP on the face...
Try not using anything on her face. Use a wet washcloth to wash her face and nothing else. You will find that will help greatly. The Am-Lactin has mineral oil in it which is not good for the skin. My derm. told me to not use products with mineral oil in them or petrolium they clog the skin and make the skin worse.
Re: Treating infant KP on the face...
Lynda, yes she does have KP bumps on her face. They’re not red though like most pictures I see, they look more like the bumps in this blog I found. kidwithkp.blogspot.com/ (you can click on the pictures to make them bigger).
Her little cheeks sometimes look flushed and her arms and legs sometimes have redness, almost looks like a rash at times. I bought the Aquaphor for her the other day and it seems to be helping already!.. As for me, I have had KP for years, but it’s very minimal. My face feels a little rough to the touch, but you can’t really see any bumps. I have a little bit on my arms and legs too, but again, mine have never been really bad. Madison’s is more noticeable than mine.
Treating infant kp on face / body
Hi all,
My daughter, now 15 months old, developed KP on her cheeks, arms and legs at around 10 months. It’s all down her arms and legs, especially the right side. Her paediatrician said nothing you can do except moisturise and she’ll probably grow out of it. I then bought a few different creams and they have helped a little but not great.
Anyway, I took her to see a different doctor on Saturday about something else and in passing he told me that her skin condition was easy to treat! He told me that it was caused by a lack of oil and that I should give her 2.5ml of zinc (liquid form) each evening - I put it in her milk before she goes to bed. Then she is to also take 1 teaspoon of flaxseed oil each day (I mix this in her breakfast cereal). I’ve been doing this for a few days and am seeing some improvements but obviously it is early days yet. He reckonned that it would be all but gone the next time he sees her in 3 months time.
I will let you know how I get on and if it works. FYI I have stopped putting any cream on while I try this as I don’t want to mix up treatments....

Body Deficiencies and Environment
When I was a child/teenager, the Neutrogena transparent bar soap got rid of it completely for me in 2 weeks. It’s a "cheap try" if you want to buy a bar.
KP FACE
DID YOU HEAR FROM ANYONE IF THIS IS CAUSED BY SOMETHING INTERNALLY
THANKS
this might help
Hi, My 17 month old daughter has KP on her face, back of arm and thigh. A friend whose daughter also has KP recommended we use Aquaphor (from Eucerin). I was already using Aquaphor for her diaper rash (you can buy it anywhere) but it has made SUCH a difference with her KP! We just massage a little into her skin in the morning and night and the bumps/redness have all but disappeared. Try it and see if it helps your little one, too...

New girl who has just discovered KP! - forum entry
Hi everyone, I’m 23 and have had what appears to be KP since I was approx 10 years old. Despite several doctors visits, nobody has been able to give me a name for the condition until now!
Until recently, the bumps and reddened skin just affected my arms, but it now seems to be spreading to my legs and back as well, so I’ve decided to do some of my own research, which is how I stumbled across this forum.
I’m willing to try virtually anything, so any suggestions you have, please let me know!
If I find anything that actually helps or stops the spread of it, I’ll be sure to let you know too!
Thanks
Hannah

KP? Or maybe not? - forum entry
Hi I am new to this board, I am 44 and have just noticed recently...these red dots on my legs before shaving and after and a bit on the back of my arms where I dont shave. Thing is ...this is new to me. I never had it until now and am reading that most of you have had it at a young age. I am not diagnosed with this, as I have a dermatologist appt in MAy (the soonest they had) so I have to wait till then. Maybe I do not have this condition. Can someone help me with this? I do not have the raised bumps. I have mpore freckles, age spots and now this and I cannot stand them. Anyone willing to give their thought s on this? Did anyone get these in their 40’s?

Self-Esteem is in the Pits! Low-Self Image! - forum entry
Can’t get rid of redness although bumps are gone! I want to show skin too! It’s so agnozing to see friends, and movie-stars dressed in sleeveless blouses and gorgeous arms! I hate the coin termed skin is in or all those wretched commericials about glowing skin.
I’m finally able to allow my husband to rub my arms when we embrace after so many years but the redness is still embarrassing. I always hide under my sweaters or quarter length sleeves. I’m researching how to reduce or eliminate the redness. Feeling so low. Major complex issues. Anyone feel the same way?

help with toddler’s kp - forum entry
Hello, I have a 21 month old little boy who has kp on his arms, legs, and face. He inherited it from me. I have it on my face but it is not nearly as bad as his. I have done everything. I now use dove soap for sensitive skin and baby aveno soothing cream. I have tried every baby cream. The doctor told me to use vaseline and that didn’t do any good. I don’t want to use an alpha hydroxy because he is outside alot and I don’t want him to get burned. So that makes it difficult because then I can’t use kp duty or eucerin dry skin therapy with intensive repair cream. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can use to help control these darn pink bumps! - Thanks.

chemical peel question - forum entry
I’ve tried everything to help my KP and they never get better. I was wondering if anyone had information on whether a chemical peel like they do to faces would maybe work to help the condition. Maybe there’s a dermatologist that belongs to the forum that could tell whether a procedure like this would work. Thank you!

Wow there is a name for it!! - website submission
I am 33 and have had KP since I was a child. During my 20’s I went to the tanning bed alot and they were alot less noticable. Now that I am older I am looking for a more holistic approach. I’m now trying tea tree oil products, and my showers are shorter and less hot.

Keratosis Pilaris Information (and Member Introductions) - forum entry
Keratosis Pilaris (KP) - Characterized by the appearance of small rough bumps on the skin. Primarily, KP occurs on the back and outer sides of the upper arms, but can also occur on thighs and buttocks or any body part except palms or soles...
Keratosis refers to a localized overgrowth of the upper layer of skin. Pilaris pertains to the hair. In keratosis pilaris, the buildup of keratin (the hard protein in the skin, nails, and hair) is limited to the hair follicles.

9 year old son has KP - website submission
My 9 year old son has always had KP on his arms and legs. It has now spread to his chest & face, and is starting to bother him. My 6 year old daughter has also started getting bumps on her arms. It is always better in the summer, but I wish for them I could make it go away. I’m going to try some ideas I have learned from this site.

Keratosis Pilaris Research Petition - forum entry
Keratosis Pilaris Research Petition - I have placed a petition up requesting that dermatological researchers make a better effort to understand the causes of KP. Now that the human genome has been mapped and there are sophisticated computer models available to analyze any information dermatologists could collect about KP, there is more hope than ever, but researchers don’t seem to be particularly interested in KP. Let them know that we want better treatments.
Please go to www.petitiononline.com/kp1/petition.html and the petition.
Thanks.
