Why I Ride.
Current mood: lonely
Category: Sports

Since I constantly have to explain to people why I ride, I know that I stand no chance of ever being understood by non-riders. My explanations come across as rationalizations. I ride for a lot of reasons. Rarely is it ever to ride faster than somebody else. Life is hard, and it always seems a little better when riding a bike. I am trying to outrun the pain in my life. Somehow punishing my quads with climbs seems to flush out my desire to punish myself with drugs and alcohol. On rare occasions after extreme efforts in areas of startling natural beauty I have achieved a state of bliss that has something in common with physical and religious ecstasy. I am not chasing this. I am not bummed if it doesn't happen, but knowing that it might is part of why I ride. Unlike life, on the bike I can seamlessly overcome any obstacle that comes my way; a steep hill, technical section, traffic or riding partners. I get a sense of freedom that I am in control of where I go, how fast, and how far. The minute the rubber hits the road and my Lycra hits the saddle, everything seems to fall into place.

I am moving!
Current mood: enthralled
Category: Life

Well i am moving again! I have been thinking and talking about this move for a long time now, and now I am finally making it happen. I am moving to Hawaii in 3 weeks! January 5th is my flight there and I am leaving Phoenix on the 4th. I am really excited and can't wait to get there. I love Oahu and know the island better than I know Phoenix. One of the main reasons I am moving is to go back to school and get a degree. I have been putting it off for too long and finally realised that i need it. I should be graduating already but the year I was taking off turned into almost 5 years.

The reason is because, well, its Hawaii and that is just badass. It does help having family there too. My mom, sister, step Dad, and step sister, all live there. When I first get there I am going to crash at my mom's place, but I need to find a roommate somewhere. Anyone know anyone with an extra room on Oahu? Also need a job. Anyone?

I have been doing a lot to prepare for this. A lot goes into moving to Hawaii. You can't just pile stuff in your car or a Uhaul and drive out. I have to ship my car out there on a freighter, which costs $1000, and it has to be completely empty. Anything that isn't bolted to the car must be out. I am going to try and get as much stuff as possible with me on the plane. My bike, clothes, camera gear, and all the other essentials. I also have my cat. Hawaii is a pain in the ass with pet importation. There is sooooo much stuff to do and fees you have to pay to get him there. If I missed anything he will have to go into quarantine there. I just have a lot of stuff to take care of.

For school, I will probably be going to Chaminade University. It is a private school almost next to UH. Since it is private I don't have to worry about residency, and I can bust out some GEs there until I get residency to go to UH. Assuming I get in and get registered, classes start on January 8th.

Anyway I am so excited to start a new chapter in my life. For the better. I had been stuck in a rut for so long and I want to change. Hopefully starting over in a place I love will be the ticket. I am going to miss all my friends, but I want to extend an invitation to visit whenever you want. Just buy a plane ticket out and you will have a place to stay. Hope to see some of you out there!!

Whoa
Current mood: energetic
Category: Sports

So I just rode up into Anthem on the bike and got caught in the middle of a storm! I left my place and headed north into a massive headwind, which should have been my first sign to turn around. On the way up there, I saw lightning all around me. It was scary but cool. It was something I really hadn't been in the middle of before so I kept going. Haha Once I got into Anthem the sky opened up and started pouring on me. It was awesome and it cooled me down so I was stoked! Haha I turned onto Anthem Way (the main road there) and headed West and had the wind and rain at my back. I shifted to a high gear and sprinted away from the rain. It started to come down harder and sting my arms, legs, and face, but I oddly liked it. I am weird, I know. I got to the Starbucks in Anthem and decided it would be a good place to get some cover. I hung out there for awhile until the rain let up then headed home. Once I turned south I had the full wind to my back, and was going about 33mph the whole way home. Every time I looked over my shoulder I saw the rain catching up. As soon as I turned into our community it started again, this time worse. It was some of the hardest rain I had ever seen, and I am seeing it on a bicycle frantically trying to get home. I pulled into the garage drenched in water. Very cool night!

Anyway it was awesome! You don't get stuff like that in Cali often.

Photography Update
Category: Art and Photography

Here is a long overdue update on some of my recent photography endevours. I have been working a lot lately, as most of you know, but i have made time to take some pics.

First are some shots of Falkner Livingston's Land Speed streetbikes. These bikes a pimped out with nitrous and turbos. The 1350cc one is capable of 270mph , though it has yet to be tested since both Bonneville speed weeks were canceled this year.

Next are some shots that i shot around work. The first 2 are of James "Bubba" Stewart, who regulary visits to run some laps. The second are panos that i shot of the interior of work.

Lastly here are some of studio pics of some up-and-coming models. Both are my lovely co-workers. I would like to thank them both for allowing me to photograph them. The first girl is Danielle.

The next girl is Arrian, and this was her first shoot in a studio. I am pleased with the results.

Free time?
Current mood: exhausted

Can anyone remind me what it is like to have free time?  I miss it. Almost everyday for the last two months i wake up at 7:30am and drive out to Corona to help out at the go kart track. I leave there at 3:00pm and head directly into Pictage for work. I get off work at pictage at about 1:00am. Go home and go directly to sleep, and do the same thing the next day. I am burned out. I haven't had time to do laundry in like a month.

Today I had to get up at 6:00am, drive to Corona, pick up our van and studio lights, drive from Corona to Santa Ana, and shoot pictures there for 4 hours. I got paid for it, but now I am at work, tired and exhausted. Luckily Friday is my last day at Pictage, and it can not come sooner. I really enjoy going to the kart track in the mornings and helping out.  I spent the whole previous weekend out there installing a sound system in the builing. JBL speakers in the ceiling, i put ceiling speakers in the offices with volume controls on the wall. I enjoy working there and being a part of what is to come, even though I am not getting paid to do it as of yet. I know that my job at the kart track is going to form my career for the the rest of my life. I stand to learn and benefit a lot from this job. Not to mention the fun i will have while doing it.

Any time that i do end up having free time, i use it to relax. Last friday i did not go out to the track. I had plans to get laundry finished, and clean the house. Well I ended up sleeping in until 11, sitting on the couch until noon. Then i went on a 50 miles bike ride, got home, showered, and headed into work. When i have free time i either want to do nothing or cycle. I miss cycling. I really want to get out there everyday. Do 50 miles a day! I don't have time, and it kills me.

So if anyone wonders why I haven't talked to them recently or wanted to hang out, now you know why.  I will start having more free time, i hope in the next few weeks. I move out to Murrieta this weekend, so i will be a lot further away. Although i do not mind taking a drive to go hang with anyone.

An Unforunate Weekend
Current mood: sore

Well i had a very interesting Sunday. Started out just great. Got my haircut and my car washed. I decided to go for another ride on my road bike. I headed up north into Marina Del Rey and turned back around to head home. It was a nice day and I was holding a steady pace of 20-25mph. Well since it was Sunday the bike path was pretty crowded headed up north. I decided to hit the street on the way south and avoid the crowd.

It was going well until a guy in a Tacoma was merging over towards me and honking his horn. It seems as though he was pissed that I was using the road. So yea whatever. I flipped him off and continued riding. Later on he pulled halfway into the El Segundo Beach driveway, leaving the trucks rear end in the lane. I went around him and continued down the road. He pulled out of the driveway, came up next to me, and started yelling at me. I couldn't hear anything he was saying because i had headphones in. So i slowed down and he slowed down. I sprinted up, he drove up. I slowed down again, as did he. The whole time all the passengers in the car are laughing, pointing, and having a great time. He was still yelling and i eventually said "Sorry, I can't hear you!" and slowed down to almost a stop and he sped off. Well I was confused and a little freaked.

I continued up the hill and when i got to the top i saw a 6'5", 250lb. angry and enraged black man standing in the number 2 lane of traffic blocking traffic. Cars were going around him. As I approached him, my mind was racing. I didn't know what to do. I was pretty scared. So I stood up and sprinted faster aand turned into the number 1 lane to go around him. He sprints into that lane and gets in a football linebarker 60/40 stance. He runs into me and knocks me down. I slide across the road into oncoming lanes. Thank god there were no cars coming or...well i don't wanna think about what could have happened. This whole part is kind of an adrenaline blur. I remember getting up as fast as I could and getting out of the street. I ran to the opposite side that he was on. I remember many people rolling down their windows asking if i was alrighty, whether i needed an ambulance or not. I just kind of shock my head no at them as I was trying to regain my composure. I picked up the now unridable bike and started walking to the gas station down the road.

When i got to the gas station, there were about 6-7 people waiting there for me. Half were on the phone with police trying to get a couple units down there. They were all extremely nice! Thankfully there are some nice people out in the world. They stayed until the officers showed up and gave statements of what they saw. Many offered me a ride home if I needed, and one lady got me ice for my wrist, which was really beginning to hurt. I gave my statement to the officer and amazingly the guy who pushed me stayed at the scene. The officer told me that he claimed that i hit his truck in some way, and that is why he justified what he did. That is hard to do with clip in pedals and i wasnt going to take my hands of the bars with this guy megring over towards me. Well, I had him arrested for battery.

My dad showed up and we shoved my bike into his trunk and headed home. I wrapped up my wrist, which still hurts pretty bad. It is only a sprain though. It does kind of hurt to type this also. Anyone who knows me, knows how much i really enjoy cycling. How antsy i get if i don't go for awhile. Now i have an unridable bike. Front wheel is bent beyong repair. Front brake also got tweaked. Handlebar is bent and brake/shift lever broken. Rear derailuer broken. That is what bothers me the most. I don't know what to do.

I am still a little shoken up about this and didnt get too much sleep last night. Why would someone do such a thing? What was going on in his head? Was the fact that I was using the road enough to justify what he did in his mind? Well my wrist hurts so i am going to stop typing now. It felt good to put the experience into writing.

Bike Path Rant
Current mood: aggravated

I didn't write this but it was only a metter of time before I got so frustrated that I did write one.

1) Two-A-Breasters: There is a reason the bike path has a yellow line. You ass wipes ride (or walk) side by side and hog the whole thing. Get with the program! The only good thing about you are your screams of fright as I blow by you without warning.

2) Queer-Eye-For-The-Biker-Guy: I realize that it is possible to buy an entire suit made from Spandex. It is also possible to beat off with a cheese grater, that doesn’t necessarily make it a good idea. If you were you going fast enough to make wind resistance an issue I might be more understanding but you are usually granny-gearing it as you swerve around trying to adjust your $200 sunglasses. Spend less time buying expensive crap and more time riding.

3) Slow-And-Lowers: Do you know that you can adjust your bike seat so that you don’t look like a bear riding a mini-bike at the circus? Take the 30 goddamn seconds to raise the freakin’ seat. Your back will thank you and you’ll be able to break 12 miles per hour with out blowing out a knee cap.

4) Sky-Bar-Enders: Bar ends ARE NOT for getting your hand six inches above the handle bars. They should not be pointing straight up in the goddamn air! If you don’t know exactly why you would want bar ends then YOU DON’T NEED THEM. They are not a convenient resting place for your chubby hands. They are for getting your weight forward during a STEEP TECHNICAL CLIMB. I hope impale yourself on them after you hit a tree because you couldn’t reach the brake lever in time.

5) Richie-Dick: Yah you, the guy with the $3000 full suspension big hit bike poking along the bike trail. The biggest hit you have ever taken was when you got butt raped by the guy who sold you that bike. YOU SUCK! You are the same dumbass who buys a Hummer so you can gun it when you roll over some construction on Mass Ave. You buy a sweet bike and then ride it on freakin’ pavement. I know you have never hit the trail cause’ there is NO DIRT on the thing. Not a spek. Plus you look like a pussy. Either take it off pavement or give it to someone who will.

6) On-Your-Late: Ok there is absolutely nothing wrong with a well timed “On your left” but here is the thing. The whole point of saying it is to warn the rider in front of you that you will soon pass them. Not that you are already next to them on their left side! If your bike is next to mine, IT’S TOO FREAKIN LATE. If we were going to collide we would have. You screaming “On your left” in my ear at that point will only increase the chances of me making an error and crashing into you. Just pass you re-tred.

7) The HFS (Huge Fucking Stroller): HOLY SHIT! Are you running a cloning lab? If your stroller needs a brake it’s too damn big. Take your kids to the playground and play some tag or something. Jesus, there are bikes flying by at 30 miles per hour. If one hits you your kid will fucking die. I know you think the world will stop for you and your precious little angels but get a clue. Three words “Severe Head Trauma”.

8) Woof-Woof-Splat: Keep your dog on a leash you ass. First of all it’s the FUCKING LAW. Second of all your dog is dumb. So dumb in fact, that it will run in front of my bike to eat some piece of shit left by another jackass dog walker. I WILL hit your dog. I will not get killed or hurt somebody else trying to swerve around Fido. I almost died last year trying to avoid an unleashed dog and will not repeat the mistake. I love dogs but I like my unbroken bones better. Take responsibility for your pet.

9) Roller Bladers: You all suck ass, flailing your arms wildly as you coast along on you roller skates. YES they are roller skates and thus, quite lame. I don’t care if the wheels are “inline”. You jackasses suck so hard I have to break you down into sub-categories of suck.

9.A) Newbi-Tard: You people are ridiculous. You are all decked out in helmets and pads. You mostly look terrified as your (usually fat) ass careens down the very slight grade of the trail. Here is a hint. If you don’t know how to STOP then it probably isn’t safe for you or anyone else for you to be on the path. I swear one of you is gonna fall in front of me and get an imprint of my front sprocket on your fat thighs.

9.B) Pack Of Newbi-Tards: See above but clustered together, literally hanging onto each other for protection. You are worse than the individuals. You take up the WHOLE TRAIL so nobody can pass. Heed the dirty looks you get and go find a freaking parking lot. I hope to kick one of you as I ride by and watch as you all fall over in a flabby whimpering heap.

9.C) Hot Chicks With Skimpy Outfits: The only reason you suck is because you are fully clothed and make me slow down to check you out. Other than that you rock.

9.D) Super Sweet Doooods: You guys are sooo fucking gay it’s not even funny. You think you are awesome as you take up the whole trail gliding back and forth in super sweet slow motion. I dream of you flying off the trail and getting wrapped around a tree.

People Of Mention:Having been on the path more than a few times I have come to recognize a select few people who require special attention. The kid who shot me with a plastic BB gun: I saw you hiding behind the bush well before you shot me. You were lucky I was going fast when the yellow BB hit my chest and thus had to slow down a little before leaping off my bike and chasing you as far as your back yard. You were scared shitless which is good because you could kill someone doing that shit. If I ever see you again you won’t be so lucky.

The 35 people who rode by me pretending I didn’t exist as I asked for a spare tube or a patch kit after blowing both of my spare tubes: You all suck ass. A very nice lady eventually stopped and gave me a patch. I know I was covered in mud but come on people. I always stop and ask people if they need help, common freaking courtesy.

The Decked Out Intense Midget Woman: OK you are not actually a midget but you do look very small. Or perhaps you look small in comparison to the mounds of crap attached to your mountain bike which is too big for you and I am sure has never left the pavement. Not only do you fall into categories 2, 4, 5 and 6. You were also one of the 35 jerks who didn’t help me. In fact you looked me in the eye and didn’t even slow down. I KNOW you have every sort of tool and tube imaginable packed away in your various slings and packs yet you rode by as if I were invisible. You look like a goddamn scuba diver with your neoprene outfit and mirrors sticking off of every available part of your bike. I see you on Mass Ave. from time to time in the morning on my way to work. You look retarded. And why do you hang a huge plastic bag from your bar ends?!?!?! It looks like your gear makes you waterproof to the depth of at least 15 meters. What are the bags doing? Worst of all YOU ARE SLOW!!!!! God you are slow. Jettison some of your useless shit and maybe I won’t blow by you 4 times in one ride.

Tubby Guy On The Tiny Road Bike: I’ve only seen you a few times. Once I passed you through an intersection not knowing that this would enrage you so much that you would be forced to almost hit me as you sprinted past me sneering. I must say I was impressed, you hauled ass dude. I’m guessing you didn’t keep it up very long tho. If I hadn’t been on the tail end of a five hour ride I would have raced.

Gay Guys On The Tandem Bike: I am assuming that you are gay simply because I don’t know any straight guys who would go in 50/50 on a bright yellow tandem Cannondale and then ride it regularly in spandex forgive me if I am wrong. I haven’t seen you guys in a year or so. You were my arch rivals. Holy crap you were fast. One time I kept up with you (on the downhill) for a few minutes and almost died. I swear you would slow down until I got close and then take off again. I salute you, you bright yellow bastards. Oh and good call making the one eyed guy ride in back.

People Who Rock: Yes there are some people who rock! I’m not a total asshole

Hard core road bikers: Holy crap you guys (and gals) are fast as hell, keep it up

Unicyclers: I’ve seen you in the fells and there is only one word for you BADASS!!!!!!!!

Messengers/Anyone on a fixed gear with no brakes: You know it but I’ll say it anyway.

Elite.Trials Riders: I wish I had skills like that.

Little Kids with Big Helmets: You rock, two thumbs up!

Vegas Baby!

Yea so i went out to vegas last weekend. It kicked ass. Yes i know this blog post is a couple days late and pretty long, but shut your faces and read it anyway. I went out there for Krystal's B-day party with her, Daniel, his GF, and his cousin. First before I begin i have to thank Krystal for inviting me and let me stay with them there.

Ok here we go. I had to work Friday night and after I got off work at 1:30am i drove over to Daniel's house and crashed in his front room. We were up by 7 and everyone came over and we left by about 8. Daniel drove his gf and krystal in his newly dented up truck. I drove up in my car with kenny, Daniel's cousin. The drive went fairly well with only one tiny little hiccup. That hiccup being a speeding ticket. We were driving up the Cajon Pass and I had Daniel directly behind me when we got to the top. Once you reach the top, it goes downhill for awhile into the Victorville area. Well in the section cars tend to pick up a little speed, 91 miles per hour to be exact. Well I looked in my rear view and saw Daniel's Truck chilling back there following me. I looked again a couple seconds later to see a CHP squad car behind me with his lights flashing. By this time, however, we were probably going 80mph. So i figured that he just needed to get by me, so i politely changed lanes to let him by. Well he changed lanes also. CRAP! So he pulls me over and writes me up for doing 91mph in a 70mph. That was my first ticket so i am pretty bummed about that. Well the officers hands me the ticket, says "goodbye and have a nice day sir". Psh! Jerk off. By this time I figure Daniel has to be way in front of me. Well as soon as the cop leaves my phone rings, and hey it's Daniel! They got him too, at the same time! They had the plane out that day and caught us both going the same speed and pulled us both over. Haha. Good times. So anyway we laughed about it and got on the road again. Needless to say, we were kind of freaked out so we took it easy the rest of the way to Vegas. Big rigs were passing us. LOL no not that bad. I kept it at about 78 the rest of the way. Well we got to Vegas fine and checked in and all that fun stuff. Then hit up the tables and slots. I played 40 bucks on a $5 minimum blackjack table and lost all but like $10 and won my total up to $27.50 putting me down only $12.50. I found that a good time to walk away. That night was Krystal's party in the room, and a bunch of her family and friend came. It was fun. I provided the tunes by rigging my mp3 player to the tv. Typical Kevin. HAHA. We had fun. After the party we went to the strip. And by we i mean Kenny, Krystal, and myself. Daniel and his gf wanted to stay and dance at the ghetto club in the hotel.

Sunday morning I woke up at 7:30 to go cycling out in Red Rock Canyon. Yes, i brought my bike to vegas, shut up. It was amazing! I made it to red Rock at 8:30 and began the 15 mile loop. I was, however, unprepared for the 1100 foot elevation climb with in the first 4-5 miles. That kicked my ass. Felt good though. After i reached the top is was good to cruise downhill for about a mile, and it was rolling hills the rest of the way. The scenery was amazing, weather was great, and there were not very many cars out. As sad as this may sound to some of you readers, that ride was my highlight of the trip. I had a huge smile on my face after that. I can't wait to go back and do it again.

The rest of Sunday was spent walking around the strip and going in and out of the different hotels and casinos. Spent most of my time with Krytal and kenny becasue Dan and his gf went off and did there own thing. That is another story that i really do not want to get into. We went to the Hard Rock which was awesome, and tried to get into their pool. It was full. :( No swimming with hot chicks for us. I gambled a little bit more, and lost a little bit more. I think i left vegas only down like $30 and i alotted myself 120 for gambling. High roller, i know. We ended that night checking out the Bellagio water show and walking through Paris and Ceasars. Oh, and by we I am again refering to Krystal, Kenny, and myself. It was overall a pretty fun trip. Cycling being the most fun for me. Shut up again! I like it!

Oh and no speeding tickets were issued on the way home. I am at work now, and i leave for hawaii tomorrow morning. I will be there for a week. I will, of course, have my laptop with me.

Calendars and Go-Karts
Current mood: optimistic

Yesterday I got a call from my buddy Ken, who i shot all the models that i have in the other blog with. Anyway we use all the photos to make calendars. A couple actually, Moto X, ATVs, Streetbikes, Custom Classic Bikes, and Paintball. Anyway i did all the image retouching and color correction on them. Lot of work but i got it done and they looked shit hot. Well the proofs from the press came back from Hong Kong yesterday and they looked like straight-up ass! They were really washed out and yeallow looking. So i had to drive down to San Marcos to look at them and discuss what went wrong, and how to remedy the situation. We think it was the printers issue because we know that everything looks good on our end. Although it is very uncharacteristic of the printers. We have used the same printers for the last 6 years of calendars, and they have done great. anyway we still are in commincation with them to see if they changed anything since last year that we didnt know about.

After we stopped worrying about the calendars and ate dinner, we went over to an indoor go-kart track in San Marcos. Exactly like the one Ken is opening in Corona in September. Since I will be working at the track, it was great for me to see a track that was already open and experience it for myself. I have a better grasp of their concept now and what we will be doing. If all goes well in the plan, which it is so far, we will smoke them! We did 2 races around the track, and I had so much fun. Those karts get going pretty fast! It is really addicting and I can see how these places bring in the money. I wanna get back out there and race some more. I cannot wait to start this new track. I have a feeling I will be doing a lot of racing there when I am not working.

I got soul but I'm not a soldier
Current mood: contemplative

Today I finally took my Infiniti G20 in to get serviced. Got the whole works done on it. Oil Change, tune up, flush all fluids and refil, new air, oil, and gasoline filters, new sparks plugs, new brakes, and new drive belts. Not cheap at all. There goes 2 weeks pay. It was needed though so whatever. The coolest part was they gave me a rental car for the day to use. I got a Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.7 liter hemi V8 with 345 horsepower and 395 ft/lbs of torque!. Argh Argh! (In my best Home Improvement, Tim Allen, Tool Time grunt) HAHA. That truck KICKS ASS! It is big, but rides so smooth and handles great. I gave the drive through test at McDonald's and it went through so easily. I forgot how much I really miss my old truck. I am seriously considering looking for a used one of those trucks. I would actually use it. I miss being able to throw my bike in the bed and going riding places. I miss being able to throw all my camera gear in there without having to place it in my Infiniti like a puzzle. I dont know...I am seriously considering it. Gas mileage kinda blows at 18mpg, but I do not drive very much. Hmmm.... Anyway back to my car. I dropped the truck off and picked up my car. I notice I does run a little smoother, and acceleration seems to be a bit quicker. I also just finished wiring in all my stereo equiptment. I wired my 20GB MP3 player directly into my Pioneer head unit. It is sooo awesome. I now have XM satellite radio, mp3 cd player, and a 20GB mp3 player in my car. I could drive coast - to - coast and never run out of a selection of music! Road trip anyone? I am driving. Lets go somewhere this summer. What do you all think about a truck for me? I would have to put all the stereo shit into it if I got it though. Anyway I have to go back to work. Later dudes!
